Conflict in the Middle East

Hamas response shows it doesn’t want deal

US special envoy to the Mideast Steve Witkoff announces that Washington is calling back its negotiators from hostage talks in Doha and will pursue “alternative options” after the latest response from Hamas “clearly shows a lack of desire to reach a ceasefire in Gaza.”

“While the mediators have made a great effort, Hamas does not appear to be coordinated or acting in good faith,” Witkoff says in his statement. “We will now consider alternative options to bring the hostages home and try to create a more stable environment for the people of Gaza.”

“It is a shame that Hamas has acted in this selfish way. We are resolute in seeking an end to this conflict and a permanent peace in Gaza,” Witkoff adds.

Witkoff doesn’t elaborate on what “alternative options” the US might consider, and it’s unclear if the statement is an attempt to ratchet up pressure on the terror group to compromise.

Calm down @businessflop25 you sound quite agitated.

I'm not telling you to step away from the thread, more suggesting you may want to if the subject matter offends you that much.

Sorry if threads that are critical of Hamas upset you but there are many others criticising Israel that you could choose from instead.

It's quite odd to criticise posters for feeling passionate and angry about this situation, whatever side you've picked.

I'm not criticising them more worried for their blood pressure.

I'm not sure I could stay dispassionate and disconnected on this issue, but people deal with things differently.

We've had terrorist attacks in this country and managed to retaliate without causing genocide and obstructing aid.

When did the UK have a terror attack comparable to October 7th?

And this is also why neighbouring Arab countries won't take refugees...because so many of them are radicalised. They've been burned before and won't risk it again.

Bullshit. The arab countries won't take refugees becaue they know they are going to be stuck with them permanently. Israel would like very much to clear Gaza of all Palestinians and has no intention of allowing the people to return.

Look at how many refugees there are in Jordan. Over 2 million. That was before the current conflict and some have been there for decades.

Never ... if that happened at Glastonbury and surrounding area I trust that the whole of Europe and the US would come to our defence in helping us defeat our attackers.

rubbish! You just don’t want to be called out for supporting Israel actions in Gaza

There is a huge difference between defending ourselves and defeating our attackers and starving innocent civilians including children!
Hell I’m no supporter of the way the UK and USA handled the post 9/11 conflicts in Afghanistan and Iraq. We made a hell of a lot of mistakes but we didn’t starve the population to death, nor did we deliberately shoot children, nor did we annex parts of their lands… and our government ministers were not spouting off online about ethnically cleansing those populations!

There are rules of war for a reason! International law is there for a reason. And Israel has repeatedly broken them time and time and time again.

True, but it doesn’t help that Hamas are violating several of them, by not wearing distinguishing uniforms and by hiding in and launching attacks from civilian infrastructure.

Where would you like Hamas to find a uniform from when Israel control everything that goes in to Gaza and has done for decades?
And sorry but not wearing a uniform is hardly the same as STARVING CHILDREN!

A lot of people do find the refusal of people to shut up a about the starvation of kids, the stealing of land, the destruction of infrastructure tiresome. It gets hard to make excuses for each new atrocity. That's why so many people latch onto idiotic things like blaming the UN for forced starvation when we all know managed perfectly fine to feed the people Gaza(despite being killed in record numbers by the IDF) before Israel decided to intervene.

You don't seem to have any idea about gaza or Hamas. Israel hasnt controlled everything for decades. Gaza was sort of functioning, albeit a repressive dictatorship with a completely dysfinctional economy. Hamas had loads of income they just misused it. They certainly found the means to build tunnels and military capbility and they manage to bring out shiny smart clean uniforms whenever they release the hostages for their propaganda parades.

I don’t need to calm down thanks! And stop being so bloody rude. You don’t get to dictate the direction discussions goes.
Perhaps instead of calling out the conversation you could you know perhaps call out the actions of Israel!

businessflop25 · 25/07/2025 17:43

So you are now denying that Israel has controlled the border crossings into and out of Gaza for decades!!!

and you say I know nothing about Gaza! 🙄

MissyB1 · 25/07/2025 17:55

In the latest "deal" which has failed, Israel would only agree to a temporary ceasefire (something like 6 weeks I believe). They then would go back in and restart the bombing, camps, and blockade etc... Hamas rightly rejected that as the population desperately need a permanent ceasefire. How anyone (including the bloody Americans) could say Israel should be allowed to continue the bloodshed is beyond me.

SharonEllis · 25/07/2025 18:02

You do realise that most of the rockets and the likes that Hamas chuck at Israel are made out of scrap metal and rubble from Israel’s continuous destruction of Gaza!
Where there is a will there is a way of getting weapons in or made to just about anywhere. I’m not denying that Hamas had and has weapons.
But I doubt a uniform would be particularly high on the agenda for Hamas to smuggle across the border

Alittlefeedbackwouldbenice · 25/07/2025 18:10

SharonEllis · 25/07/2025 18:02

Mmmm, how do you think Hamas got all those military supplies?

Most of them are made from Israeli, bombs, shells, etc repurposed back into rockets. Israel bombing Gaza is giving Hamas more weapons, has done for decades! Which is why it never made sense that they'd periodically bomb them, thereby giving them extra ammunition, whilst simultaneously banning passata and chocolate because they were too dangerous...

Over 3,500 people were killed during the Troubles in the 60's-80's. You may be too young to remember the terror that was caused to people in the UK and Northern Ireland but I'm not.

Yet the UK did not respond by flattening the whole region by indiscriminate carpet bombing and preventing water, food and essential supplies getting to civilians.
