Arabs hating Jews is part and parcel of the region; the Muslim Brotherhood is a power house. Israel is defending itself, both reactively and proactively and I don't blame them. I often wonder how many posters would cope, if it were their own families in danger from such an influential enemy. An influence that isn't just contained in the ME.

Yes, someone who is from the Middle East is projecting European perspectives on to the Middle East…lol

The Middle East isn’t this tribal place that you are making it out to be. Alliances are important of course but as I said in my post, let’s not pretend this was an act of support by Netanyahu but rather another attempt to weaken the bordering countries, under the guise of protecting the Druze.

The ME isn't this tribal place - oh dear.

I think people just really don’t understand the middle-east, cross border tribes and the importance off ally’s somewhere like the middle east. Europe and america often do things to piss each other off, the loyalty of allyship is different in the middle east where shitting on your friends can get you actually killed. Whatever noises some Druze leadership make the Druze people will see Israel intervene on behalf of their people and will approve. I’m just happy the jihadis were stopped before they went hog wild.

They are projecting european perspectives onto the middle east.

Always.
It does my head in. But I also know there's sweet fanny adams most of us can do, though the very least we can do is not bring the whole sectarian shit show to our doorsteps. I remember in the 80's reading magazine articles lauding Assad for Syria's stability while vilifying Saudis for drowning recalcitrant daughters in swimming pools.
There are very selective worldviews when it comes to the middle east.

No the Americans don’t care about minorities, thats true.

The golan heights has been contested for decades, this is not unusual, india has contested territory with China and Pakistani. Hell the UK had to fight in the Falklands, this is not unique to Israel and Syria. Thats between Syria and Israel, Israel pursue a land for peace policy which is why the Sinai is under Egyptian control and they don’t control bits of Lebanon. This is reasonable in the middle east.

Jolani probably worked with the CIA, a lot of people who were supposed to oversee him from Isis mysteriously disappeared on the way to visit him when he was leading his little faction (he’s anti-isis and hunted them in Idlib, he didn’t like the idea of a caliphate for nationalistic reasons). It’s partly why I’m hopeful for him.

Jolani is by all accounts extremely intelligent, need to stop seeing arabs as stupid, lacking agency or pawns, it’s insulting and racist. I doubt any western government wants to do away with him, he’s the best chance of a stable and trading Syria. Syria doesn’t have lot of natural resources so I’m not sure what you are referring to.

But I well believe that Trump wants this done to get a Nobel Peace Prize. Tbh I can’t stand him but if he managed to stabilise the middle east during his term then fuck it, let him have it,

The Golan Heights are illegally occupied by Israel as recognised by International Law.

Nobody suggested that Arabs are stupid.

Jolani's rise and the convenient destruction/deaths of any of his rivals paving the way for his assent, points to intelligence agency involvement.

Wasn't Jolani a member of Isis? He does seem to like jumping around terrorist entities.

Those who think that actual Syrians are going to allow this Saudi Born unelected "leader" to sign away their land or make peace with Israel with no blowback are living in cloud cuckoo land.

Realpolitik means that it's only so long that Jolani's own rebels will turn against him. In December these ghouls were boasting about how the "next step is Jerusalem, to liberate Al-Aqsa". Now they see Jolani negotiating with Israel.

It's a whole shitshow.

This in a nutshell OP

"However, some Druze figures in Syria and Lebanon have accused Israel of stoking sectarian divisions to advance its own expansionist aspirations in the region."

I thought so

Sorry in the region you have Hezbollah, Houthis, Hamas, IRCG, ISIS, Al-Qaeda those are just the big ones, not all the little militias peppered all over Iraq. What makes you think Israel is the only problem here. ISIS were literally setting fire to people.

To some the only problem is Israel. They are quite happy to ignore the various terrorist organisations and whom they kill but Israel must be condemned whatever it does. Give the terrorist free reign though. I wonder why..........

..because ignorant people presume Jews are only white - or predominantly white. You only have to look at the self loathing of some white people, who say they are ashamed to be white British, for instance. Those same apologists, will be the people on the marches. We can't have them treating white folk as victims. As I say, they ignorantly boil it down to Israel white v Palestine brown. That condescending behaviour has gone on for way too long, amongst the left.

Kashmir is occupied by Pakistan, unfortunately this is not abnormal.

When we keep talking about the being puppets then yes we are.

He was never a member of Isis, ever. He was in prison with Baghdadi but he was Al-qaeda. They are quite different. What happened was local Al-Qaeda were instructed to roll in with Isis in Syria form my understanding . He wasn’t having it and splintered from Al-Qaeda. None of that makes him a good guy at all.

He is a Syrian, raised in Saudi and Jordan, a lot of Syrians are spread all around, doesn’t make them any less Syrian.

I don’t disagree with your last point at all. It was always going to be difficult to turn a country full of armed nutters into a nation state. There are uzbeks, pakistanis, afghans, chechens, tajiks armed to the teeth and still in battle mode running around, still ideologically committed to Jihadi aims. Part of me wonders if Jolani isn’t intervening in the coming massacre of the Druze because he’s hoping the worst of his lot will be bombed by Israel on their way to Suweida.

Starting to feel quite depressed about this, a lot of civilians are going to end up dead, Druze and Bedouin, it’s awful.

User37482 · 18/07/2025 09:28

I would also point out that Israel has so few allies in the region that it has to take care of those it does have. The Syrian Druze matter to Israeli Druze and in addition to that they “protect” it’s border. Theres a very good reason Israel will bat for Syrian Druze. Their leader though, definitely the type to make shit worse.

Well, they broke the ceasefire and have been killing alot of bedouins which hasn't been mentioned much. They aren't a bunch of oppressed angelic innocents like Netanyahu has made them out to be.

Kakeandkake · 18/07/2025 09:34

If anything, Israel 'batting' for them has more likely than not, emboldened them to continue fighting.

Who called them angelic innocents? They are an ethnic minority in danger of being 'cleansed' , I thought that was something people on this board cared about.
You know, like Kurds, Yazidi, Alawites etc

Seen that argument before. It's a matter of opinion which side is more likely to be 'ethnically cleansed' if they lay down their arms. Thank your god you're not there.

Kakeandkake · 18/07/2025 10:35

As are the bedouins who the druze are killing in Syria. Do you not care about them either?

My point is, neither side is fully innocent in this civil fight taking place in Syria. Israel batting for the Syrian Druze is not going to help when it has just spurred them to break the ceasefire and carry on killing the bedouins.

Do I not care?

You seem to want me to pick a side, Druze vs Bedouins. What nonsense.

Or is it really Israeli allies vs Israeli enemies?

Which side have I picked on when I said neither is innocent and both are being killed?

Looking at what is happening there right now, has Israel bombing Syria helped?

Have you read any of @User37482 posts?

Can you guarantee that your opinion is more informed than theirs?

Voxon · 18/07/2025 21:49

I'm watching videos of what they're doing in Syria. I just watched one where gunmen walked three civilians to a balcony and forced them to jump off.

I'd ask how it's possible that mumsnet has managed to twist this around to being Israel as the baddies but I already know the answer.
