Israel Reaches Agreement With EU to Allow More Aid Into Gaza

  • The European Union reached an agreement with Israel to allow more aid into Gaza, according to Kaja Kallas, the bloc's top diplomat.
  • The EU-Israel deal includes measures such as reopening aid routes into Gaza, allowing bakeries and public kitchens to distribute food, and resuming fuel deliveries for humanitarian facilities.
  • Kallas said "we really need to see also this agreement put in practice," and noted that there were already improvements, such as fuel getting to hospitals.

The EU-Israel deal is the outcome of negotiations between Kallas and her Israeli counterpart, Gideon Sa’ar, an EU spokesperson told reporters, adding that the measures would be implemented in the coming days.

Also reported in the Times of Israel, "More trucks, more crossings, and more routes"

Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar confirmed the agreement, saying the security cabinet decided last Sunday on measures “to improve the humanitarian situation in Gaza,” including “more trucks, more crossings, and more routes for the humanitarian efforts.”

Speaking alongside Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger and German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephu, Sa’ar thanked his counterparts “for the fruitful dialogue that we are conducting — with you and the EU — on the humanitarian issue.”

The discussions are “based on an understanding of human needs and of the threat that Hamas and the Gaza Strip have posed to Israel over the past 20 years,” added Sa’ar, saying, “this dialogue is important and it will continue.”

The announcements by Sa’ar and Kallas confirmed an earlier report by Bloomberg, which said that a deal had been reached enabling the reopening of several aid corridors, including humanitarian routes through Egypt and Jordan, and several other crossing points in northern and southern Gaza.

“These measures are or will be implemented in the coming days, with the common understanding that aid at scale must be delivered directly to the population and that measures will continue to be taken to ensure that there is no aid diversion to Hamas,” Kallas said.

May have something to do with threats to look at EU - Israel association due to concerns about war crimes by Israel?

Think of the unnecessary suffering that could have been prevented if it had not come to EU considering this. Tells us that sanctions do work? Even the threat of them?

EU cites ‘indications’ Israel is breaching human rights obligations over conduct in Gaza

Leaked document marks significant moment in relations with ally but stops short of calling for immediate sanctions

Whatever the reason, it s surely a good thing if more aid is going to be coming into Gaza. Surprised there has not been much interest in this thread.

Seems like a lot of people are more interested in Israel bashing threads than anything more general about how things may be about to get better for the people of Gaza.

Yes of course it would have been better if there had been no aid shortages in the first place. That’s obvious but it’s just a return to the old circular argument of who is really to blame for the war - Israel or Hamas. And why Israel had to change how aid was distributed in the first place which again was the fault of Hamas.

Even in the leaked document mentioned in the article you posted, it is noteworthy that once again the EU stopped short of calling for immediate sanctions against Israel.

The EU has been talking about sanctions for a long time, I’ve seen many people on these threads complain that all they do is talk.

The EU are shameful. They needed to be putting some proper pressure on well over a year ago. They are showing their weakness- countries with completely different opinions trying to make decisions together.

It is positive, it sounds like they will revert to the usual aid delivery methods? Unfortunately it is also very late. I hope it happens quickly.

From what I’ve read the GHF will continue to operate in southern Gaza. But aid will also flow through the UN & other international relief organisations.
