Pleased that it seems more people are talking about Gaza

I'm pleased that it seems that more news commentators in the mainstream media are talking about Gaza, having noticed for a long time that it seems to be ignored. I heard Emily Thornberry talk about it on Lewis Goodall's Sunday LBC show yesterday morning and several people mentioning it in terms of Ethnic Cleansing and almost saying Genocide. I still think it should go much, much further in terms of raising awareness, but I think and I hope that we are turning a corner and more people are speaking out. I hope this is is the case, otherwise we are becoming at risk of normalising the mass slaughter of the Palestinian people, which cannot be tolerated. I hope I am not alone thinking this is a good sign.

More people talking about Gaza? It seems to me that you can hardly turn on the radio or watch the news without Gaza being mentioned - to say nothing of the world service! There are, as ever, two sides to the question. I don’t think anyone has ever “normalised” the mass killing of Palestinians - but why have the Israeli hostages not been released? It’s all a very vexed question, and I’m glad I’m not having to sort it out, or to determine the rights and wrongs of it.

I have found the coverage and commentary lacking until recently. I have felt that it warranted much more coverage for a long time.

I know a very wide range of people and everyone finds the whole thing upsetting. There’s just no excuse for the level and extent of the cruel war it has become, with children and civilians brazenly bombed and starved. It’s hideous, and I no longer believe that releasing the hostages-which they should do-will make any difference to the situation for people in Gaza.

I agree. This seems like an unstoppable genocide which we are seeing in real time and people including the UK government have been complicit.

I agree that there does seem to have been a shift and that more people are beginning to speak out. At least it seemed that way a couple of days ago but I was surprised that the march in London on Saturday didn't get any BBC press coverage (unless I missed it but I did search)

Whatsinanamehey · 19/05/2025 17:36

I'm glad more people are speaking out too OP. It has reached a stage where it's much more difficult for even out leaders to outright deny it's a genocide. Keir Starmer was asked today if it was a genocide but he denied to answer, he did say the humanitarian situation in Gaza was unacceptable and intolerable.

Whatsinanamehey · 19/05/2025 17:39

Asked by Sky News' political editor Beth Rigby whether he believed a genocide was taking place in Gaza, Sir Keir Starmer did not directly answer.
Instead the prime minister said there was a "really serious, unacceptable, intolerable situation" unfolding in the territory.

Yes, I noticed that he denied to comment on whether it was a genocide. He keeps saying it's intolerable - I keep thinking that's not strong enough a word to describe the horror really. It's all very well saying this, but it's the actions that speak louder than the words and we need to stop selling arms.

I'm glad too OP.

Top many countries are complicit in their silence.

We can argue semantics, history and nuances of the conflict but what is currently happening has been a lesson in cruelty.

There is no justification for what is happening currently and there never will be.

@Whatsinanamehey that is so weak.

Michael Martin our Taoiseach had much stronger words with 7 other countries.
We will not be silent in front of the man-made humanitarian catastrophe that is taking place before our eyes in Gaza. More than 50.000 men, women, and children have lost their lives,”

Whatsinanamehey · 19/05/2025 18:09

@fixingmylife @Martymcfly24 I agree, his words are both weak and ineffective in the face of this genocide which he is complicit in. That's partly why he is refusing to say it out loud.

You're posting coded anti-Semitic dog whistles and upset about having that pointed out to you?

I'm posting some facts from reliable sources. There is no need to tell me to STFO or whatever it was.

You may not have intended to, but the phrase 'Isreali [sic] lobby' absolutely has roots in anti-Semitic conspiracy theories. I will call that shit out when I see it.

Well that's the first I was aware of this. As far as I'm concerned I'm just quoting fact. I'm not in the business of conspiracy theories at all. I object to your rudeness to be honest. Trying to have a balanced discussion without abuse thanks.

OK then. Glad to have played a small role in helping you understand the harm you are perpetuating. Best of luck out there x

BelleHathor · 19/05/2025 19:22

The inaction is likely due to the lobbying and pesistent threats of censure/cancellation if you don't do or say the "right thing" as demanded. Thomas Massie said about the American congress that every representative "has an AIPAC babysitter".
It's the same in the UK too.

The ability to mount a campaign which can ruin your life means that everyone from students (deported/unable to graduate) , journalists (Sangita Myska at LBC) and especially politicians (AIPAC paid $20 million dollars in America run candidates against 2 progressives who weren't Pro Israel enough : https://x.com/aaronjmate/status/1831363088618254368) has to either conform or face potentially losing your employment and/or being smeared.

Illan Pappe wrote a book about it last year:
"In 1896, a Jewish state was a pipe dream. Today the overwhelming majority of Jews identify as Zionists. How did this happen?
Ilan Pappe unveils how over a century of aggressive lobbying changed the map of the Middle East. Pro-Israel lobbies convinced British and American policymakers to condone Israel’s flagrant breaches of international law, grant Israel unprecedented military aid and deny Palestinians rights. Anyone who questioned unconditional support for Israel, even in the mildest terms, became the target of relentless smear campaigns. Lobbying for Zionism on Both Sides of the Atlantic shows us how an unassailable consensus was built – and how it might be dismantled."

There's also the older book "The Israel Lobby" by Stephen Walt and John Mearsheimer :

Aipac state their aim is to lobby for policies that support Israel, i.e an Israeli Lobby group.

Martymcfly24 · 19/05/2025 19:25

Wikipedia also uses the phrase Israeli Lobby

The presence of a term on Wikipedia doesn't justify amplifying anti-Semitic narratives x

Are AIPAC also amplifying anti-Semitic narratives? 🤔
