It estimated that up until 30 June 2024, 64,260 Palestinians died from traumatic injury, meaning an under-reporting of deaths by 41%.

Gaza war death toll could be significantly higher, researchers say

A study in The Lancet suggests Gaza ministry of health figures over a nine-month period might be too low.

I think most people (certainly me) would agree the death toll must be far higher than is reported. There must be many bodies under rubble that are unaccounted for, plus people who had no relatives or friends to identify them.

This is one of the world’s top peer reviewed medical journals- we will see the use of statistics debated in the correspondence in the coming weeks but the methodology is pretty sound and the study would not have got this far if it were not of a high calibre.
The findings are consistent with other published medical researchers last year.
So scientifically speaking , I think robust.
But also, just look at the satellite pictures and use cop on .The Gaza ministry of health criteria are incredibly strict- those buried under rubble are not counted, those blown to bits, those whose entire families were wiped out haven’t been counted.
All those poor families.

Thank you for sharing OP, I hadn't seen that. I think the true extent of the horrors won't be fully known until the war is over. However, it is safe to say from much of the information we have that the death toll is much higher than reported.

I saw a US official saying it is 'unacceptably high'. (useless words from them) the IDF claim to have killed a certain amount of Hamas members but have never provided any evidence for their numbers. Testimonies from IDF soldiers also report that the IDF routinely include civilian deaths as Hamas.

'Unacceptably high'. What did they think the IDF was going to do with all the bombs they sent - use them as ornaments?

So true. Recently there was the drone attack in Tammun, West Bank that the IDF said “struck a terrorist cell" but turned out to be two children of 10 and 8 and a 23yr old civilian.

The young boys were killed with their cousin in a strike which Israel said targeted a "terrorist cell".

Agreed.

I wonder how many more have died from preventable or treatable illnesses?

Dulra · 11/01/2025 08:36

Horrific number of civilians killed. Not surprised by it and grateful to the launcet for conducting the research. We won't know the full extent of what has happened until proper access to Gaza is allowed.

ScrollingLeaves · 11/01/2025 13:27

Reuters has also reported this. Let’s hope it leads some people who believe the Gaza health figures are too high to reconsider their view.

Reuters makes clear the higher figure does not even include deaths from other than traumatic injuries, such as poor sanitation, etc.

It’s grim. I’ve been seeing a lot about the LA wildfires (which is obviously horrendous for all involved) and there is quite in depth reporting about what it feels like for the people who have lost their homes. I’m not sure what I’m writing here is really to do with the death count, but more that the impact of what has happened in Gaza, is so huge, that people sometimes don’t seem to be able to grasp it. Perhaps it’s about how vulnerable they are to death, from what are minor events when you have access to a warm house and health support.

There are competitions between IDF units to kill the most Hamas.

With a rather broad definition of 'Hamas'... Some people count toddlers, bedbound OAPs, aid workers, basically anyone with a pulse who isn't in their army.

Well the Israeli national security minister does believe children are undercover terrorists
