Conflict in the Middle East

Benjamin Netanyahu says UK decision to suspend some arms sales to his country 'shameful'

Days after Hamas executed six Israeli hostages, the UK government suspended thirty arms licenses to Israel.
— Prime Minister of Israel (@IsraeliPM) September 3, 2024

Days after Hamas executed six Israeli hostages, the UK government suspended thirty arms licenses to Israel.

This shameful decision will not change Israel’s determination to defeat Hamas, a genocidal terrorist organization that savagely murdered 1200 people on October 7, including 14 British citizens.

Hamas is still holding over 100 hostages, including 5 British citizens. Instead of standing with Israel, a fellow democracy defending itself against barbarism, Britain’s misguided decision will only embolden Hamas.

Israel is pursuing a just war with just means, taking unprecedented measures to keep civilians out of harm’s way and comporting fully with international law.

Just as Britain’s heroic stand against the Nazis is seen today as having been vital in defending our common civilization, so too will history judge Israel’s stand against Hamas and Iran’s axis of terror.

With or without British arms, Israel will win this war and secure our common future.

So much for our Government caring about our five British citizens still captured by Hamas.

Comedycook · 03/09/2024 13:54

Terrible timing to say the least

Lweji · 03/09/2024 13:58

As far as I'm aware, even Israelis are concerned about the actions of the Israeli government, including in endangering the hostages lives.

The horrible actions by Hamas don't justify the killing of so many children and civilians by Israel.

RafaistheKingofClay · 03/09/2024 14:03

Netanyahu decided the hostages were collateral damage ages ago. Relentlessly bombing Gaza isn’t going to get them back alive.

The timing is terrible though, even if it probably is the right decision.

Lettherebejustice · 03/09/2024 14:19

It's Netanyahu who should be ashamed. This decision by our government was long overdue. Why should we continue to turn a blind eye and support Israel's war crimes.

27 people were also killed in Gaza. It's at the end of this article.

Scirocco · 03/09/2024 18:28

Well, if he and his friends think it's bad, then it's probably a step in the right direction. When people aren't sure about what the right thing to do might be, the exact opposite of what Netanyahu and his friends would do is probably a good starting point.

Scirocco · 03/09/2024 18:32

@EasterIssland unfortunately the government almost certainly won't be able to block F35s because of how the system for getting them works. We can only hope for more scrutiny and action in the cases where things can realistically be blocked.

YoYoYoYo12345 · 03/09/2024 18:40

Israel predominantly gets its weapons from the US who believes in the right of defence.

Hamas and other terrorist organisations predominantly from Iran. Perhaps more (not sure what though) should be done to block weapons to Hamas.

Dulra · 03/09/2024 18:42

Was listening to a report on the radio about the horrific Russian attack in Ukraine today. The reporter was pointing out how it is difficult for Ukraine to go on an offensive in Russia because they obviously can't use western funded weapons on Russian soil. Would that be the same with Israel in Gaza?

How do the settlers get the weapons ? Are they self defending whilst stealing land and killing people??

BorgQueen · 03/09/2024 18:57

Stupid and shortsighted to piss off Israel, our armed forces regularly train with theirs, with huge mutual respect, we need all the well trained allies we can get.
Lammy is a fucking idiot.

Uk government didn't go far enough, but at least it's something.

Pretty stupid and shortsighted to think the UK can't make decisions based on their own laws because they might piss off someone else. I would like to think soldiers training together don't get involved in the politics in fact it's pretty rare they would, their job is to obey orders.

He’s not a fucking idiot actually, whether you agree with him or not. Violation of international law isn’t something to be sniffed at for decent minded countries / democracies.

Scirocco · 03/09/2024 19:52

A recurring theme in US policy is 'might equals right' so the US government isn't exactly the gold standard of international justice and world peace.

Exactly. The irony of Netanyahu trying to shame another government is just laughable.

BorgQueen · 03/09/2024 20:15

He thinks Men can ‘grow a cervix’. If that’s not a sign of his mental ineptitude, I don’t know what is.
He’s as thick as mince.

Newbutoldfather · 03/09/2024 20:15

Unfortunate, as long as Netanyahu remains prime minister, Israel cannot be considered worthy of unconditional support.

His coalition with self-declared racists like Smotrich, Eliyahu and Ditrich is not compatible with Israel being a modern compassionate democracy.

As a Jew, reading about unpunished settler violence, naked land grabs and, worst of all, an Israeli torture and death camp (Sde Teiman) is profoundly shocking. This is the country some of my relatives found sanctuary in after WW2 and the beautiful brave country I visited 40 years ago as an adolescent.

Of course, Hamas are beyond disgusting but, if Israel get even by being equally ruthless with innocent civilians, then they lose the moral high ground.

As friends and allies, the West need to put pressure on Israel to act decently, and for Netanyahu to step down.

EasterIssland · 13/09/2024 20:24

36 MPs have written to the government raising concerns about complicity in violations of international law by not suspending export licences for F-35 par

It’s a shame that the ‘response’ in Gaza and the West Bank ever reached the stage where simply labelling a person as a terrorist, or implying they happened to be in the vicinity of one, was enough to justify their death or disablement. The burden of proof for this level of action should be much higher.
