Conflict in the Middle East

So, the UN are saying that Israel MUST stop bombing Rafah, but . . .

the UN does not say what the consequence is if Israel does not stop. What is the consequence? What are the UN going to ACTUALLY do?
Have I missed something?
They just keep saying stop but they don't follow through with any action AT ALL.
So what's the incentive to stop?

What can they do?

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:24

Did the UN say anything about the Wests war on Terror?

What can they do?

Well exactly. Can they do anything?

If they could - what would it be?

OP posts:
Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:27

I don’t think they can just highlight their message in the press?

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:28

Sanctions? Can’t see that happening though

Did the UN say anything about the Wests war on Terror?

I don't know - did they?

What is the function of the UN? Is it just a talking shop?
Who answers to them?
What are the consequences?

@PotholesAnonymous I don’t know hence why I asked, google doesn’t come up with much. I know there was a lot of criticism re Guantanamo but don’t know if that was specifically by the U.N.

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:33

Hasn’t Russia ignored the UN?

Doesn't pretty much everyone ignore the UN?

PotholesAnonymous · 24/05/2024 23:34

From where I'm standing they just look like a glorified, international commentator - with no actual sway or substance.

I hope I'm wrong but they seem to talk a lot but do nothing.
Like a muttering old guy in the corner that talks a lot of sense but everyone ignores because they have no real power.

I hope someone comes on here to say I'm wrong and tell me how much influence they have.

Otherwise it's a waste of news airtime reporting what the UN 'think'.
They could report what I 'think'. but who gives a shit if it achieves nothing.

I think they move slowly, but sanctions would be next and “inspections”? Then if states fail to comply they send a “peace keeping force”. Isn’t that what happened in Iraq?

From memory with Iraq the US just went straight to “bomb and invade” highly unlikely with Israel.

Liv999 · 25/05/2024 09:32

Been wondering that myself, why is the UN there at all, they dont seem to have much power as everyone just ignores them

Dulra · 25/05/2024 10:04

I think questioning why the UN are there at all just demonstrates how little you know about the UN and the work they do worldwide.

Yes they can't force Israel to stop but they can apply a lot of pressure and apply means to pressure them through sanctions etc. It's slow they are not going to force compliance through force but in the long run diplomatically for Israel it is not a good look to defy rulings. They can be expelled from the UN and security council which would leave the country quite isolated. There would also be question marks over their stance as a democratic nation which is a core value of the UN. With democracy comes rules and responsibilities, if you continue breaking them are you a democracy at all.

I think they did a lot of “you’ve got a super gun”, “show us your super gun” first. Then “let our inspectors in to look for your (mythical) super gun” and then they “liberated” and “won hearts and minds” some statues got knocked over and hit with shoes, and then they bombed the shit out of the area for a decade…..I would imagine it won’t go like that (and frankly hope it never does again).

Cecilly · 25/05/2024 12:18

The UN has passed lots of resolutions in regards to the Arab Israeli conflict and most (if not all) have been ignored by Israel. There have been no consequences previously and there will be no consequences now. This whole thing is a charade, an attempt to placate the masses for a while. The only reason this resolution passed is to provide more time and cover for Israel to "get the job done".

Februaryfeels · 25/05/2024 12:56

The UN appear to be a rootless and powerless talking shop

Russia even has veto powers.

YellowHairband · 25/05/2024 13:20

Pollipops1 · 24/05/2024 23:24

Did the UN say anything about the Wests war on Terror?

Kofi Annan, as secretary general, certainly said the Iraq invasion was illegal as per the UN charter.

But to OP's question, I don't know if that position really meant anything beyond a sort of telling-off.

Scirocco · 25/05/2024 13:26

There is nothing the UN can enforce, as anything they try is and will continue to be vetoed by the US.

And the power of AIPAC etc means the US won't change that approach.

Israel will continue to destroy Gaza, occupy the West Bank, and oppress innocent people. The US will support them to the end.

The US will almost certainly never willingly support a real two state solution. The longer term game plan of the US and Israel for the region is blatantly obvious.

Or what?

(said in a yobbish 'c'mon then if you think yer'ard enough' kinda way)

There seems to be absolutely nothing to stop world leaders doing what the fuck they want, including massacreing thousands of peopole day in day out.

How the fuck did we let ourselves be ruled by this pointless mob of governments and 'world organisations'?

All they want is land, more land, money, more money. they don't give a shit about us civvies AT ALL.

The world's civvies need to do what the French did.

It's long overdue.

Tbh I wouldn’t wish that on any civilian population.

So, it all goes quiet with the mention of us civilians actually standing up to our governments . . .
