Conflict in the Middle East
HermioneWeasley · 24/05/2024 21:58

Awful. I despair for Jews everywhere. The anti semitism they always told us was just below the surface has burst forth and the government and police are doing bugger all about it.

You just can't help yourself, can you?

SpiritAdder · 24/05/2024 22:11

Shomrim president Rabbi Herschel Gluck told the JC that the hate crimes in the area were being committed by white 'yobs' who are 'exactly the same people who commit Islamophobia'. He added that they were not doing it because of a side they have taken in the conflict between Israel and Hamas, but because they want to attack vulnerable communities, including Muslim groups. (from article linked in OP)

This thread should be moved from the conflict in Middle East category as the antisemitic hate crimes are nothing to do with the conflict in the Middle East.

HermioneWeasley · 25/05/2024 08:15

And @Nctodayjan24 shows the mentality exactly - saying a 16 year old British boy is a fair target because he shares the religion of a foreign government. If we said that all British Muslims were fair game because of the atrocities of the taliban or the Iranian regime, I suspect you’d think that was racism.

That is exactly what many people do say and act upon. And have done for years. And it's wrong whenever it happens, whoever it's happening to. I hope whoever threw those stones at that young man is caught.

This is SO important. I feel quite helpless ( and ignorant) about the situation in Gaza ( but I do deplore what is happening to the people of Gaza and to the hostages) but I do feel able to contribute about things that happen here. Racist / antisemitic attacks are always wrong ( obviously) and they have erode trust and cooperation so ultimately affect us all.

I have asked MN to update the title to reflect it is becoming more prevalent since 7-10.

Rabbi Glock is working to knit Muslim and Jewish together , bless him.

Of course it has to do with the conflict in the Middle East, why do you think antisemitic hate crimes are on the increase otherwise, people are watching the news, seeing what's happening in Gaza and rightly or wrongly blaming Israel, same thing happened after 9/11 with the Muslim community

There on the increase because antisemites feel they can get away with antisemitism. And they often do.

This response is unnecessary. If a British Muslim child was a victim of islamophobia in the UK, would you search the internet for stories of questionable things done in islamic countries and post them? I do hope you wouldn't. So why have you done that here?

Yes of course but the conflict is playing a large part in it, when the IRA were bombing Britain back in the 80s and the Irish were being deliberately targeted was that just because the anti Irish in Britain felt they could get away with it then? Nothing to do with the fact their cities and homes were being bombed and they were a bit pissed off about it..

You're talking like you think antisemitism is in some way understandable. Like it's the fault of Jewish people that it's on the rise. On a thread about a young Jewish boy being attacked.

HermioneWeasley · 25/05/2024 12:28

As a reminder, anti semitic attacks and speech increased immediately after 7th October when Israel had done nothing to retaliate.

a bit like people just hate Jews.

I'm not saying it's understandable at all, it's disgusting just like islamaphobia, anti Irish sentiment etc, what I'm saying is people will always respond to whatever is happening in the world at the time and use it as an excuse for attacking innocent people

"This thread should be moved from the conflict in Middle East category as the antisemitic hate crimes are nothing to do with the conflict in the Middle East"

So the rise in anti semetic hate crimes since October last year is purely coincidence?

That’s a bare faced lie. There has been a huge increase in antisemitic hate crimes since 7 October and many of the perpetrators are Hamas supporters.

@SpiritAdder There is literally another thread with the same wording for anti-Muslim hate on the CITME board.

Are you on there saying the same thing?

On Saturday my teenaged brother who wears notably orthodox Jewish garb was yelled at by a group of university students. They shouted Free Palestine, and F-ing Jews.
Its a scary reality that the security risk for Jews in the diaspora is a lot higher during times of Israeli conflict.

Thisagainandagain · 27/05/2024 09:59

It's on the increase, its in plain sight, it's not called out by others on the marches (even when signs and chants are next to them), people appear to get away with it, it's excused, it's miminised.

It needs calling out, prosecution, exposing, condemnation.

Which is exactly why this gentleman thinks it's OK to brazenly walk about Oxford Street like this.

(And I'm not interested in any 'oh it must be his surname' contortions.)

Yep. Enabled, encouraged and ignored. He feels quite confident in his support of Hamas.
