A call for reparations and an end to occupation.

maudelovesharold · 19/07/2024 15:21

Am watching this live on the BBC app. Please, please listen, Israel. Even as the International Court of Justice gives its opinion, I kind of know you won't....

A call for reparations and an end to occupation.

On the other hand we have Ben Gvir and Smotrich calling for the annexation of the occupied west bank in response to the ICJ's ruling today

Will the ICJ ruling make any difference?
I highly doubt Netanyahu and his government care in the slightest that they systemically discriminate against Palestinians

I'm glad they stated Israel's exploitation of natural resources from the Palestinians.

The documentary I posted about earlier will give an insight into the zealotry of Netanyahu's far right government.

And the point was made in the film - even if they stop any new settlements, that doesn't stop them expanding the existing ones.

Scirocco · 19/07/2024 15:32

Even if the Israeli government establishes total control over the Occupied Territories and silences every dissenting voice, it is recorded for history that the ICJ recognised the wrongfulness of their actions and said "Stop".

EasterIssland · 19/07/2024 15:57

I’m glad a court has said that enough is enough and Israel has to stop occupying Palestine. Doubt Israel’s government will listen taking into account they just approved the biggest settler area ever.

Parkingt111 · 19/07/2024 16:28

And to prove that the ICJ actually have a point, right on cue we have settlers burning Palestinian land

It shows what they are.

Dulra · 19/07/2024 16:50

Great news. Yes non binding and advisory but it shows the occupation is unlawful and will encourage states that do recognise the occupation to reassess their recognition now that it has been found as unlawful.

PeasfullPerson · 19/07/2024 17:04

This is at least some vindication for everyone who has suffered at the hands of this occupation, and everyone who is against it. It makes it harder to dismiss their claims, it makes it harder for those who would rather pretend otherwise to turn a blind eye. Moments like this restore my faith in humanity.

Thank you

"And the point was made in the film - even if they stop any new settlements, that doesn't stop them expanding the existing ones"

I said this earlier, but on first reading this is not the case. The ruling apparently says dismantle the settlements, entirely.

If my reading is right, I fully back this.

They are illegal. On Palestinian land. And encroaching every day.

BelleHathor · 19/07/2024 19:49

The problem is that there are approximately 700'000 settlers illegally occupying the land, many of them armed and as you can see from the documentary and other published videos/texts they will not leave willingly or quietly. I am afraid by the world turning away and allowing this illegal encroachment to carry on over decades, sadly there are very limited solutions right now.

I totally get that, and let's be frank, a major factor of the size of the settlements is to make it very difficult to dismantle them.

That would be a huge undertaking, but that was the whole point....to make them too big to remove.

But if Israel (not the current government) is serious about peace, that is exactly what needs to happen.

TheWoodlanders · 19/07/2024 20:38

This should have been headline news. But there was an IT glitch so...

Absolutely Ted don't get me wrong I am 100% with you, that they need to 100% be dismantled. I am just feeling extremely disappointed today with our so called International bodies, politicians etc. and their lack of action. I'm also worried about the current escalation in the region. In response to an IDF attack on civilians in Lebanon the Houthis fired a drone last night that travelled 2000km avoiding all air defences, hitting Tel Aviv killing and injuring people.

The threat escalation calculator has changed and if the political path continues to be rejected by Netanyahu and the Kneeset (who just voted to never have a 2 state solution) the only solution will be military, which will lead to more death and destruction.

I can't wait for the bastard's trial in the Hague. I just hope he's unpopular enough in some quarters to be handed over some day.
