Conflict in the Middle East

After the war and how does peace work? Gazan economy

In a couple of months I am sure this war will end but it leads to the question how does Gaza support itself economically?.What jobs will be availbale? I guess construction jobs may be available for part of the population but who will pay those workers?

The international community will have to give air of some form so is this an opportunity to link aid to not having a terrorist group governing the country?.I fear a lot of countries may give air but this will tunnels into funding new jihadi groups ultimately so how do we stop this?

I don't expect Israel will be supplying employment so will it be up to Egypt.to perhaps allow Palestinina workers to enter the country to earn money?

The situation of having billions of aid funneled into Gaza to support terrorist infrastructure has to be avoided so to my mind The governance of Gaza has to be such that Israel's security is priority.

It's hard to imagine right now, but I hope the promises of the international community to create 2 states might help. If Gaza is linked to the West Bank and East Jerusalem with one government it could help build a stronger economy. I would hope Israel will be making a huge contribution towards rebuilding the universities, schools and infrastructure, I'm sure they would acknowledge the need to repair any damage. To build a functioning economy the Palestinian state would need not to be under blockade, and able to build partnerships with the international community.

Mushroomsouptonight · 26/12/2023 11:48

Rather than giving billions in aid perhaps give food, materials and the means to rebuild. Aid appears to go to the terrorists rather than the people.

eardefender · 26/12/2023 16:07

It’s a good question op. At the moment here is no viable Palestinian political partner. The PA are totally corrupt and lack credibility with their own people. Hamas sadly are popular but obviously cannot be taken seriously politically. I saw an interview with an Israeli professor who said that the Middle East is based on ruling family leadership and that this is the norm in all peaceful Middle Eastern countries that are Muslim. I am really paraphrasing him here. In Gaza apparently it would be split into 5 or 6 of these areas.
pre war Gaza was wealthy, huge amounts of aid money went in, despite hamas using it to become billionaires and run extensive terror infrastructure the people although poor enjoyed many more hospitals and a higher standard of living than many other countries in the Middle East.
if aid continued at the same rate then the money is there to rebuild Gaza and it has always had the ability to be prosperous and stand on its own feet economically as it did before 2005.

I think the future of Gaza is very uncertain. Are the people of Gaza going to be allowed to return? There has been talk of Israel occupying Gaza as it does the west bank due to security concerns. The current government are not going to go with a 2 state solution they have made that very clear. However continued occupation and control is not the way forward as we have already seen. The infrastructure is damaged, schools, hospitals, basic facilities so it is going to be an uphill battle.

@Desertrose2023 Are they not offering to do the place up again for the residents, now they have wrecked it? Oh no, I see the JP article thinks the nicest option is to pop them all into the Sinai.

MissyB1 · 26/12/2023 20:05

OP you seriously think Israel are going to let Palestinians live in Gaza again?? That’s if there are any Palestinians left alive when Israel gets bored of carrying out the genocide and ethnic cleansing.

GingerSquid · 26/12/2023 20:16

Thanks for sharing, interesting article and in fairness some of it makes a lot of sense. Israel is going nowhere, no matter how many Free Palestine marches happen. Really shitty for the innocent people of Gaza, especially the children.

stormy4319trevor · 26/12/2023 20:32

Tbf there have been a few politicians and commentators suggesting expelling the population, or 'voluntary emigration'. It's been made clear from the beginning and the west will have to take them, due to conditions the IDF has created on the ground. I used to think the world wouldn't let it happen, but it's looking likely now. Your question probably is redundant, OP, unless there's a miracle.

Have to agree with pp that Israel’s plans for Gaza almost certainly do not include the Palestinian’s. Whether they are physically driven out or not I imagine Israel will take control of Gaza once the war is over.

BabaBarrio · 26/12/2023 22:57

If Israel does forcibly remove or genocide the Palestinians where they stand, then a few of William Blake’s Proverbs of Hell come to mind:

The wrath of the lion is the wisdom of God.
A dead body revenges, not injuries.
Drive your cart and your plow over the bones of the dead.

An Israeli real estate firm has already advertised new build beachside villas in Gaza:
”We at the Harey Zahav company are working to prepare the groundwork for a return to Gush Katif”, referring to a bloc of Israeli settlements located in southern Gaza before Israel’s withdrawal from the territory in 2005.
The caption continued: “Several of our employees have started working on land reclamation, clearing waste and expelling squatters. We hope that in the near future, all of the hostages will return home safely, the soldiers will return home and, God willing, to start building in every part of Gush Katif.”

I don't know who would want to live there after what's happened @BabaBarrio They might struggle to sell those apartments.

BabaBarrio · 26/12/2023 23:43

I don’t think they would. There are enough extremist settlers in the West Bank killing Palestinians with their own hands to get their homes and land. I’m sure some of them would jump at the chance to get a government subsidised mortgage on a beachside villa where the “squatters” have been “expelled” for them.

stormy4319trevor · 26/12/2023 23:47

@BabaBarrio I'm superstitious. I think the land will be cursed. But maybe you are right and there are people who won't mind.

Of course there are people who won’t mind. The same people who have been violently land-grabbing and settling for years and the people who are now killing and mutilating thousands of innocent children.
Attempts will be made to rewrite history so that Palestine “never existed” and the only people who ever lived there apart from the Israelis were terrorist Arab immigrants who came to kill Israelis in their millions but were defeated by the brave IDF.

Thereissomelight · 26/12/2023 23:56

I hope there are enough records of Israel’s vile behaviour that this history rewrite can’t happen.

Thereissomelight · 26/12/2023 23:57

Despite all the journalists that Israel has banned, blocked and murdered.

Desertrose2023 · 26/12/2023 19:25

I’ll think you’ll find these articles sum up the Israeli plan for Gaza post war. Their intent is to make it totally uninhabitable so that Gazans will leave “voluntarily” never to be allowed back.

https://m.jpost.com/opinion/article-779510

Have just fully read this now (written by an Israeli of course) and am disgusted at the blatant history rewriting that is already evident here.

According to the article, Israel conquered Northern Gaza and was forced to damage infrastructure. That’s it! No mention of the killing of 8000 children and mutilating and orphaning of thousands more in the process.

Also according to this article, despite all the money it has received, Gaza has done nothing to help itself. No mention of the airport Israel destroyed, the impoverishing land and sea blockades imposed by Israel, the functional imprisonment of the Gazan people, the fact that Gazans are amongst the most literate and educated people in the ME yet are not allowed to leave their tiny piece of land without Israel’s permission.

But no, according to this Israeli writer it is EGYPT that has been keeping the Gazans trapped in their strip of land. Now the writer hopes that Egypt will behave more nicely and hand over part of itself to 2 million people shortly about to be permanently displaced so that Israel can do some renovations on its newly acquired real estate. In return, Egypt will receive a pat on the head from the rest of the world and be looked upon leniently (for now at least) by its ever-enlarging new neighbour.
