Conflict in the Middle East

Consumer Boycotts

I posted the BDS list in the supporting Palestinian businesses thread and recent discussion on another thread re the backlash against Zara got me wondering how many others are participating in consumer boycotts linked to the conflict in Gaza (and the occupation in Palestine) or for different reasons.

there are a number of brands I’m boycotting usually for a mix of reasons, political, environmental and social. Interested to hear views from others.

Disclaimer: to avoid any misinterpretation or twisting of my words - I do not support any acts of violence or vandalism or boycotting based on religion/ethnicity.

all the ones on the BDS committee list

https://bdsmovement.net/

in addition to a few others (sample below)

Starbucks: overpriced shit coffee and they recently sued their union for tweeting in support/solidarity with Palestine.

Zara: I stopped buying stuff following the controversy of their head womenswear designer making disgusting anti-Palestinian comments. The reports of slave labour (Uyghurs and in Brazil) plus the recent tone deaf ad campaign was the final straw. Plus trying to be more conscious re reducing how much ‘fast fashion’ I buy anyway.

Nestle: a history of unethical corporate practices plus including ownership of an Israeli food company with production in OPT.

BDS Movement

The Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) movement works to end international support for Israel's oppression of Palestinians and pressure Israel to comply with international law.

Boycotts certainly work though when done properly, look at Hewlett packard, though it is still advised to boycott them do their links with the detention of west bank Palestinians. I would say don’t let people on this thread put anyone off, boycotts do have an affect.

I have said myself that I boycott certain brands or organisations. Yes if done right boycotts do work I agree

It is just some of the brands or organisations suggested to boycott really have nothing to do with the Israeli government or support them in anyway. So like I said before always do your own research before following a list on a website or leaflet

Randomly picking brands to boycott for things like an employer objecting to staff online celebrating 7th October pogrom using their logo. Is not a humanitarian action. It is the action of violent loving idiots that more than likely hate Jewish people. So do your research.

Don't worry about it my posts are an English language teacher's nightmare

So long as people get your meaning nobody cares apart from a few grammar police types. However they fair to realise for a start such things like some people don't have English as their first language

headstone · 04/01/2024 21:59

I would love to say English wasn’t my first language Trulywonderful but it would be a lie :)

But I thought boycotts don't work 😉.

Sharing this link for anyone that wants to sign the petition. Regardless of your personal views re BDS, the right to boycott for ethical reasons is an important freedom and should not be curtailed. This is a bigger issue.

I'm not British so I wasn't aware of this. How embarrassing 😳

Desertrose2023 · 09/01/2024 19:35

Indeed. Taken from PSC’s website:

Right to Boycott
The government has tabled an anti-boycott bill with the aim of preventing public authorities, like local councils, local government pension funds or universities, from making ethical choices about spending or investment.

The government’s main target is campaigns in support of Palestinian rights but those pushing for action against deforestation, environmental pollution, and the exploitation of children and workers could also be affected.
This will erode local democracy, restrict freedom of expression, and undermine campaigns for social and climate justice.
PSC is leading a coalition of over 70 civil society organisations, including trade unions, faith groups, NGOs, and campaigns, calling on the government to scrap this bill.

Thanks for sharing @Desertrose2023 . How worrying that our rights are being attempted to be removed in this way.

Russelljack01 · 10/01/2024 14:03

I boycott brands if they have minimalised my place in society. I won't be boycotting any brands, that are subject to the current levels of intimidation and harassment, every Saturday.

Would that be rights, as in customers trying to eat their McDonalds or drink their Starbucks, in peace?

Please don't conflate the idea of a boycott with individuals who are creating a disturbance. The bill is concerning the former.

Anyone boycotting Eurovision this year ? Hope there are a few Gaza flags in the event
apparently they’re not kicking Israel out because they’re apolitical. They kicked Bielorrusia and Russia and made Ukraine the winner few years ago …

This made me laugh. Even drug dealers are taking a stand.

Damn. It's something being boycotted by drug smugglers.
