Layla Moran hasn't posted any more news about her family since 20 Dec

Is this the end of the matter?

Silence1 · 23/12/2023 15:06

I haven't seen anything posted by anybody since the 20th

Actually there is information here which was posted yesterday. This man's peace loving father died as he could not get to hospital and there is another lady in the Church who is very ill. He also talks about how difficult communication has been.

Around 300 people are understood to be sheltering inside Gaza’s holy family church

This is from todays Guardian -still sounds dire

France’s president, Emmanuel Macron, expressed “great concern” about a Catholic parish in Gaza with the Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem, his office said.

Macron spoke with Cardinal Pierbattista Pizzaballa by telephone on Saturday to discuss the “tragic situation” there since the outbreak of war in October.

“Hundreds of civilians of all confessions... have been living under bombs and bullets for more than two months while worshippers and nuns take care of the sick, elderly or disabled,” Macron was quoted as saying.

The Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem said on 16 December that an Israeli soldier shot dead “in cold blood” a Christian mother and daughter on the grounds of the Gaza Strip’s only Catholic church.

Macron offered his condolences for the parishioners who he said were killed “shamefully”, AFP reports. The Israeli army told the news agency that a review supported findings that no church was hit and that civilians were not injured or killed.

Parkingt111 · 24/12/2023 14:55

Well it seems in this instance even Macron surprisingly doesn't believe the IDF

Jawdat Mikhael lives in Bethlehem, but his family is trapped in Northern Gaza. His parents, brother and dozens of other relatives have been sheltering in the Holy Family Church near Shejaiya in the east of Gaza City - an area devastated by Israeli bombardment.

As Jawdat and I are talking, a call from his father Han'na Mikhael comes through.
Image caption,
Jawdat Mikhael speaks with his father, who is still in Gaza
The line is crackly and connection is unstable - yet he hangs on for a glimpse of his dad.

Han'na tells his son the family is doing ok. He says he's managed to venture out of the church for the first time in more than two weeks to try to find some food. He says that all is left around the church is rubble and that all the shops are burned. "It's total destruction," he says.

He wells up as he says that communications are down and that there is no water. Food is scarce, too - "enough to keep you alive - not to fill your stomach," he says.
Han'na cries as he tells me about how different Christmas was last year.
"On days like this, we'd be decorating the church. There'd be carols. People would come over to help. But now we're just praying to make it out of here alive."
The family has already suffered a terrible loss.
A week ago, Jawdat's grandmother, Naheda Khalil Anton - who was also sheltering in the church in Gaza - was shot twice in the stomach as she was on her way to the bathroom. His aunt Samar Kamal Anton rushed to help her and was shot in the head.
Jawdat shows me pictures of the immediate aftermath and the funeral.

Merry Christmas from Portugal. This is very much the feeling here, saw this yesterday whilst out on a walk. So sad and shocking to see the nativity portrayed this way but it is so true 😢

Has anyone seen/got more info on this? Apparently a 600 year old monastery in south Lebanon bombed by Israel on Christmas eve. I couldn’t find any reporting of it in the international media - just a couple of articles in the regional press.

Merry Christmas @istoodonlegoagain
as horrible as it is to see the nativity displayed like that I’m actually glad. It gives me hope that at least the world understands what’s going on and regular people are speaking up, even as our leaders do nothing.

Merry Christmas to all those celebrating ❤️
May the new year bring peace and prosperity to all, especially to all those suffering around the world

Not reported anywhere else so hopefully fake news.

Efacsen · 25/12/2023 10:18

@Parkingt111 So pleased to hear that the Jordanian RF was able to provide food and water for the people sheltering at Holy Cross church

stormy4319trevor · 25/12/2023 11:19

I'm sorry. I can't bring myself to say merry Christmas. Because it isn't. It is a desecration of our sacred day. I need to do the children's presents, go for family lunch and walk, but I can't understand how the violence could be ramped up on Christmas Eve and continue throughout the day. It is such disrespect for religious belief and so inhumane. All that is left is prayer, more prayer and try to spread a little kindness where you are.

Parkingt111 · 25/12/2023 11:32

@stormy4319trevor it's hard to comprehend. I heard Away in a manger playing outside and even though I don't celebrate Christmas it made me quite emotional, thinking of all the babies who don't have a safe place to stay right now in the holy land.
Sending you a hug

@Efacsen thankful for small mercies

stormy4319trevor · 25/12/2023 11:42

@Parkingt111 Thank you. You too. @Efacsen Yes, glad they have something to eat, but I hope food is getting to everyone there, as so many must be hungry. Peace to you both and all reading x

queenofarles · 25/12/2023 12:05

what a relief aid was delivered to them.

I listened to the sermon by Rev Munther Issac In Bethlehem last night , so powerful.
there are no words left, it must stop.

Desertrose I think the missile fell within the vicinity of the Monastery. no casualties or damage.

You are one of the most balanced and considerate posters on here. Bless you.

A message from Reverend Munther Isaac fom Palestine this Christmas.

'If you are not appalled by what is happening in Gaza, there is something wrong with your humanity. We the Palestinian people will recover. But for those who are complicit, I feel sorry for you. Will you ever recover from this?
We will not accept your apology after the Genocide
I want you to look at the mirror and ask, where was I when Gaza was going through a genocide?
