Horrifying, these poor boys. Apparently just expressing your Palestinian identity is enough to get you shot in the US these days. A very scary time to be Arab.

At least some good news.
Let’s hope he’s chraged with hate crime and multiple murder attemps.
And may he rot in prison.
Scumbag.

And hoping speedy recovery for the three young getlemen, of course.

It’s sad. A lot of anti Palestinian/ islamaphobic crimes are on the rise but the U.K. seems to only be focusing on antisemitism

go figure

feralunderclass · 27/11/2023 18:11

Definitely on the rise. I was in an online meeting with a children's rights organization who were informing parents of what to do if their child is asked about their thoughts on the conflict. This type of 'thought policing' to determine parental views was common post 9/11 and 7/7 and of course it was predominantly Muslim children who were questioned. I have a feeling that symbols associated with Palestinian identity (eg the keffiyeh) will be considered 'political' and attempts to ban them in public spaces.

ChickHenLittle · 27/11/2023 18:14

This has worried me regarding my own safety, those poor students and the little boy and his mother. I'm in the UK, but I'm still wary given the rise in attacks such as these.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 28/11/2023 09:44

The lack of interest in this thread just says it all really 😔.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 28/11/2023 09:54

I wouldn't say it's lack of interest - in my case it's because I get really miserable when I read stuff and think what these poor people are suffering. I do give to charities to help though. I did read the link about the six year old though. It says their landlord stabbed him and his mum because he thought she was going to bring bad people over from Palestine. And for that he stabs a child? You can't account for what goes on in some people's heads. But I also blame the American media and the far-Right nutters.

PurpleChrayne · 28/11/2023 10:02

The lack of posting on this thread is probably because everyone thinks it's awful, without exception or condition.

Usually, when a thread is about a Jewish person who was killed or kidnapped, it descends into a despicable parade of "whataboutery" in which any sympathy offered is countered with some dreck about settler colonialism or ethnic cleansing.

That's the difference between the two "sides" here. The same difference between the peaceful march against anti-Semitism on Sunday, and the absolute shit-shows of violence and hatred that are the pro-Palestine/Hamas ones. Go figure.

I'm not sure it's lack of interest. It an awful event. There's nothing to discuss about it. Unless you are hoping someone is going to come on and say they think it's a good thing?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 28/11/2023 10:05

Just to continue re the US - I work with Arab students and have to read a lot of theses. One was about how Arabs are portrayed in Hollywood. The film American Sniper had a scene where people were gunned down over a skyline scene with a mosque and the Call to Prayer playing. The author of that thesis said that this is incredibly insulting. Also, guess how often Muslims are portrayed as heroes, and how often as baddies/terrorists/bombers? Really, it's not so surprising that the average uneducated and unthinking American sees Arabs and Muslims as bad people.

It’s all propaganda, so that American don’t question too much when they go and bomb yet another muslim / arab country.

I don’t play video games, but I did read that there are video game(s) that are just full on islamaphobic and the palyers got rewards for just shooting arabs.
I mean…..
I forgot what the games name was.

The tv series 24 I do remember being all about ’terrorists’, all that feeds into the propaganda.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 28/11/2023 10:28

Agree! Since 9/11, tv and video games have trotted out this dangerous and racist 'Arab terrorist against the West' narrative. And it's allowed to exist with little or no challenge.

Fordham University
Reel to Real: Harmful Stereotypes of Arabs and Muslims in American Film and Television
https://rhetorikos.blog.fordham.edu/?p=1738

Since the calamitous 9/11 terrorist attacks, American media has portrayed Arabs and Muslims as a group of people who are barbaric, violent, unforgiving, and horrid. Television shows, such as Homeland, and films, such as Argo and American Sniper, are culpable for depicting Arabs and Muslims as dangerous, furious, duplicitous, violent, and extremist. These dramas connect to war, international relations, and terrorism, subjects that the Western world often associates with both groups. According to cultivation theory, ideals broadcasted on screen are then deemed accurate; in this case, individuals who have no empirical knowledge of Muslims and Arabs are unable to refute the exaggerated and inaccurate portrayals they are fed from the media.

It’s happening a lot. And increasingly if you’re seen wearing a keffiyeh you’re fair game.

our local mosques have issued guidelines to be safe.

It is frightening especially when you have children who are visibly Muslim. My dc have had threats and university property has been destroyed in the multi faith rooms, but only the Islamic symbol, a small pointer showing the way to face for prayer. And it was repeatedly vandalised so it was clearly targeted. All other faith symbols untouched.

ItsRainingTacos79 · 28/11/2023 10:40

It has set such a toxic landscape, not only in the US but also across Europe, India, Myanmar - lots of anti Muslim/ anti Arab sentiments openly expressed by people and right wing governments.

Ohlalalalala · 28/11/2023 10:40

@Desertrose2023 Sorry I really don't want to derail your thread but couldn't resist posting the links as I've always been fascinated by Hollywood propaganda, sometimes in such subtle tones one wouldn't notice without focus!

ItsRainingTacos79 · 28/11/2023 10:42

Leading to awful atrocities against Muslims/Arabs

ssd · 28/11/2023 11:02

The propaganda is very subtle. And idiots fall for it, even if they aren't very right wing. People are on the whole easily led. You only need to look at brexit.
Anyway thanks for posting this op. Its utterly deplorable. All we hear about is antisemitism and how scared Jewish people feel now. It seems they aren't alone.

Toothyfruity · 28/11/2023 11:43

Imagine. He spotted them walking down the road and got his gun, stepped off his porch and shot all three of them! It's absolutely unbelievable.

I hope all three recover well, especially Hisham Awartani who appears to be badly injured.
