Demonstrations in Israel against Netanyahu

Today quite a few people have demonstrated in Israel against Netanyahu in front of his house.

I don’t know much about the government and how he got elected but did he loads of support In the last elections? I know he’s been in power for a few years so I take citizens must like him. Do you think his image in Israel is becoming stronger or weaker and will have to leave the government soon?

A few people have said he’s actually been losing support recently so it doesn’t sound like he’s particularly popular. I don’t imagine recent events are going to help with that.

The polling suggests people blame Netanyahu very squarely for what happened on October 7th. The assumption is that he will be gone.

More broadly, Israel has a very complicated coalition system with lots of parties - one of the problems in recent years is that Netanyahu’s party has partnered with the ultra orthodox (who want more illegal activity in the West Bank) to maintain power.

Hopefully he will go soon.

My understanding is (and it's really limited) that it's proportional representation and he wouldn't have got anything approaching a decent chunk of the vote. Somewhere under 1/4. But with the far-right he could make a coalition. A bit like the DUP and the Tories. Making deals with the devil.

That’s what I was more or less thinking in the tories when writing the opening post. Are the people attending the demonstration people from the opposition (like when there is here against boris / Sunak etc) or is it also people that have elected him and have said enough is enough.

There are 1000s of protesters surrounding his home atm and the police/soldiers are being very rough with them

Coyoacan · 04/11/2023 22:16

I heard he was due to appear in court on corruption charges and then 7th October happened

MrsTerryPratchett · 04/11/2023 22:19

He doesn't care about the world opinion of him. Maybe he'll care about his own people. I mean he won't because he's been pretty unpopular for a while. But mass protests in Israel might do something.

TheWayTheLightFalls · 04/11/2023 22:22

The opposite - relied onseries of shaky coalitions.

StarbucksSmarterSister · 05/11/2023 02:28

He got less than 25% in the last election and had to cobble together a coalition to become PM. He's not even been in power a year and there have been demonstrations against him for months anyway.

People have elected him over the years because he had a reputation for keeping Israel safe. Well he failed spectacularly in that and it's highly likely that he'll be out as soon as it's feasible.

flufferknutter · 05/11/2023 13:03

I hope he ends up at The Hague.

Strepsils · 05/11/2023 19:23

He has a nickname doesn’t he? Bibi? That sound affectionate and that he is well-liked?

TheWayTheLightFalls · 05/11/2023 19:27

Google is your friend here strepsils, re how well liked he is among Israeli voters.

EasterIssland · 05/11/2023 22:25
