Amnesty International is calling on …

  • The Israeli authorities to:Immediately end unlawful attacks and abide by international humanitarian law; including by ensuring they take all feasible precautions to minimize harm to civilians and damage to civilian objects and refraining from direct attacks on civilians and civilian objects, indiscriminate and disproportionate attacks.
  • Immediately allow unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza’s civilians.
  • Urgently lift its illegal blockade on Gaza, which amounts to collective punishment and is a war crime, in the face of the current devastation and humanitarian imperatives.
  • Rescind their appalling “evacuation” order, which has left more than one million people displaced.
  • Grant immediate access to the Independent Commission of Inquiry on the Occupied Palestinian Territory to carry out investigations, including collecting time sensitive evidence and testimonies.

The international community and particularly Israel’s allies, including EU member states, the US and the UK

  • to:Take concrete measures to protect Gaza’s civilian population from unlawful attacks.
  • Impose a comprehensive arms embargo on all parties to the conflict given that serious violations amounting to crimes under international law are being committed. States must refrain from supplying Israel with arms and military materiel, including related technologies, parts and components, technical assistance, training, financial or other assistance. They should also call on states supplying arms to Palestinian armed groups to refrain from doing so.
  • Refrain from any statement or action that would, even indirectly, legitimize Israel’s crimes and violations in Gaza.
  • Pressure Israel to lift its illegal 16-year blockade of the Gaza strip which amounts to collective punishment of Gaza’s population, is a war crime and is a key aspect of Israel’s apartheid system.
  • Ensure the International Criminal Court’s ongoing investigation into the situation of Palestine receives full support and all necessary resources.

The Office of the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court to:

Urgently expedite its ongoing investigation in the situation of Palestine, examining alleged crimes by all parties, and including the crime against humanity of apartheid against Palestinians.

Hamas and other armed groups to:

Immediately end deliberate attacks on civilians, the firing of indiscriminate rockets, and hostage-taking. They must release civilian hostages unconditionally and immediately.

So how is the U.K. meeting these direct requests to the U.K?

I don't know. Have you tried Google?

DiddlySquatted · 23/10/2023 09:47

So how do you think HAMAS are going to respond to that direct request ?

Amnesty International has no credibility left following their appalling pro-Russian stance on the Ukraine war.

Amnesty International has no credibility left following their appalling pro-Russian stance on the Ukraine war.

That’s utter nonsense. Amnesty released one press release saying that the Ukraine army shouldn’t put civilians at risk in a certain town. It has released hundreds of press releases and reports criticising Russia.

HermioneWeasley · 23/10/2023 11:03

I really think their list should have started with actions for Hamas and included in their list removing Hamas’s stated intent to wipe Israel off the map and kill every Jew they find. Also to stop issuing fake news which is inflaming tensions and endangering Jewish people around the world.

but given they think that Ukraine has defended itself too aggressively against Russia, and that they think “sex is a human right”, and that women who believe in biology should not be allowed to vote. I don’t actually care what they think about anything.

Excellent post Hermione.

That’s utter nonsense. Amnesty released one press release saying that the Ukraine army shouldn’t put civilians at risk in a certain town. It has released hundreds of press releases and reports criticising Russia.

They criticised the Ukrainian army for being stationed in cities - ignoring the fact that the army was only there to stop those cities being invaded and occupied by the Russians. They completely misunderstood the nature of urban war and handed the Russian government a propaganda coup that they still use to blame Ukrainians when there are mass casualties from Russian air strikes.

In publishing the report, Amnesty rode roughshod over the opinions and concerns of their local Ukrainian branch, relying only on the opinions of a couple of American staff members temporarily visiting the country. Their entire Ukrainian workforce resigned as a result. Subsequent investigation shows that internal dissent over the report was deliberately hushed up and ignored.

They are an incredibly blinkered organisation.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/10/2023 11:10

How odd (not) that they should insist "Refrain from any statement or action that would, even indirectly, legitimize Israel’s crimes and violations in Gaza" with no mention of the reverse, and not even mention Hamas's stated aim to wipe Israel off the map

But then how predictable

Yes I think they did admit a mis-step. The press release was used to further Russian propaganda. They critized the Ukrainian army positioning itself in populated areas. But, the vast bulk of it’s coverage has been about Russian war crimes. Even the press release was hedged with reminders that the allegations of Ukraine’s endangerment of civilians do not in any way justify indiscriminate Russian attacks. It’s whole point is that it exposes violations against human rights and doesn’t take sides. So, it’s ridiculous that you say it takes a pro Russian stance. That bit is not true.

That but targets western governments? Which western government legitimises Hamas crimes? Why is it predictable?

Woo please point to me where they say sex is a human right and where women who believe in biology should not be allowed to vote; seems very off message for an organization calling for human rights for all.

Politicians worldwide are including 'everything should be done within international law.' Which I take to be a caveat, so that should there be any prosecutions down the line they can say, oh well, we did say everyone should follow the law. Sunak has also started to say there really must be a little bit of aid let in, so I suppose there has been a slight shift towards acknowledging that duty. I don't know whether Sunak ever stated that Israel had a right to impose a siege on a civilian population, but he did not condemn it as unacceptable. Starmer did seem to say Israel had the right to withhold water from children, but he's in opposition so perhaps less important. I think internationally there is a loud call to return all hostages. So I would say some of these requests ae tenuously met and some not at all. Don't know what conversations are had behind closed doors, however.

JustALittlePotatooo · 23/10/2023 22:46

So Amnesty International are ok with Hamas keeping soldiers hostage? So some war crimes are ok, just not others? That's an interesting take on it all. Good ol' Amnesty and their entirely impartial agenda

JustALittlePotatooo · 23/10/2023 22:50

Oh and wait, this is the first I've heard of the Ukraine controversy. So they criticised Ukraine for endangering civilians by the army being near them? Can someone please link me to where they say the same about Hamas? Thanks
