Time of ovulation whilst on clomid

Im currently on my fifth round of clomid (50mg)days 1-5, and am wondering if anyone knows roughly when ovulation is meant to take place when taking it?

My cycles on clomid have been 28-29 days, never longer. I had a day 3 and day 21 test last cycle which showed i def ov but didnt fall preg.

im now on cd32 and have no sign of af. Tested on friday cd29 but bfn.
I know its looking like i didnt ov this month but am still holding out some hope that maybe i ov'd later.

I have read that you are meant to ov 5-10 days after taking ur last pill but surely even if i had af would have arrived by now?

We have been ttc for 2 years now. I was really bloated on thursday and did have some really bad cramps on friday night (cd29)so was convinced af was going to arrive but they have disappeared and the only 'symptom' i have is a backache.

TIA for any info u can give me

Hi, when I was on clomid (days 2- 6) I generally ovulated about 8 - 9 days after the last tablet. Maybe you are pregnant it was just too early to a positive result? If I was you I'd wait a couple of days and test again, if you still had a negative and no period I'd call your consultant.

Have you had any monitoring scans whilst on the clomid?

Good luck and hope you get a positive result

seanybosmummysfedupwaiting · 05/05/2010 21:06

Thanks for your reply helenlouisey.

I havent had any monitoring scans whilst on clomid, just had 1 before it was prescribed. tbh im not at all happy with the treatment ive been receiving. I was on 50mg of clomid for 3 months then had 2 months break then was put back on 50mg again with no scan carried out or anything.during the 5 cycles with clomid ive only had blood tests one cycle to check if i ovulated.

Im starting to think that i ovulated later this month as i had flu at the start of my cycle and think that might have delayed it. If AF does not show up by Monday im going to speak to my GP about it.

Did you get a positive outcome from your time on clomid?

Do you actually have a diagnosis of the underlying problem?. Who decided to give you clomid and on what basis?.

You have been ttc for two years and the treatment you have been given to date in my view is very substandard. No monitoring whilst on clomid is a no-no as it cannot then be determined whether it is doing its job properly. Internal ultrasounds and or blood tests should be done whilst on clomid (as clomid can increase LH levels markedly). Also you are on the lowest dosage and clomid should only be given for a max of six months.

It is also possible to have periods without ovulating.

Has your man been tested to date, he should be tested as a matter of course (any test results done over six months ago should be discounted). At two years as well of ttc it is likely that either one or both of you equally are contributing to the subfertility problem.

Who prescribed the clomid originally, I would be looking to now work with another fertility unit (particularly if you are under the NHS as it is fair to say some units are better than others). Clomid's main job is to make the ovaries work harder. I'd be having strong words with the GP about the treatment to date. Also such issues are outside a GPs remit, you should be under the care of a gynae cons and be seeing this person on a regular basis.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers. It is all too easy to be fobbed off when it comes to subfertility.

helenlouisey · 06/05/2010 13:21

Hi - I'm afraid I didn't have a positive outcome from the clomid, but was later diagnosed and treated for endometriosis and went on to conceive after that. When I was on clomid I did have a scan at least once a month to monitor me and check what was going on. I agree with Attila that being on clomid with no monitoring isn't good.

Are you being seen on the NHS or privately? Could you get your GP to refer to you to a different clinic?

seanybosmummysfedupwaiting · 06/05/2010 21:33

Hi attila and helen,

I have been seeing an nhs gynae consultant since oct 09 and was prescribed clomid due to diagnosed annovulation.

I agree that my treatment has been substandard and i now feel like i am banging my head against a brick wall. my gp is no better either,he is actually quite useless at listening to me.
My dp has not been tested and i was told that this is because we already have a child together (who took 5 months to conceive).

I don't know what to do next.

seany,

Some suggestions for you.

Would change GP practice asap if GP is unhelpful or uncommunicative. Its no point going to this GP if he is unhelpful and uncommunicative.

I would then also ask the new practice for a re-referral to another NHS unit as the one you're currently at sounds very poor. Apart from the poor treatment you've received your partner should also be tested as a matter of course - any good unit would look at the couple as a whole rather than just concentrate on one individual.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers. Do not be fobbed off.

Thank you Attila,

I think this is the push i needed to finally change GP as i have been threatening to for a while but never actually went ahead with it.

Hi seany just happened upon this post. I am currently 28 weeks pregnant with my first baby following a course of clomid (so some good news for you)! I was only taking 25mg on days 2-6 (inclusive) and conceived on the 3rd cycle so v. lucky, I was also prescribed it for annovulation. I must say though that my experience was v. different as I had a great gynae consultant who had me in for regular internal scans to check that I was ovulating and I also had blood tests at the GP's so I agree with attila and helen that your care so far hasn't been that good! I think you should approach your GP about this. Also I ovulated very early on when I became pregnant i.e. on day 9 by my calculations after my period. I am sure you have been doing your own ovulation tests (when you pee on sticks) if you have then try starting them earlier in your cycle as you may find that you are missing the window of ovulation...? I am not sure whether this has been very helpful but good luck and fingers crossed it will happen for you soon, I know all consuming it is trying for a baby!

seanybosmummysfedupwaiting · 08/05/2010 09:16

Thanks Twittle, congratulations on your bfp!! Its nice to hear of someone getting a positive outcome with clomid . Hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well.

TBH i haven't been doing ov tests as i was told that they aren't accurate when taking clomid. I did temp and do ov tests for one month but gave up as i was getting quite stressed about the whold thing.

I definately need to change gp and get a new consultant, the care ive received so far has been def been utterly crap!

hey... im new to these forums... decided to join as me and my husband are due to strat clomid. it all seems very complex.. or am i looking into it too much?

we have not been advised of scans? just that I have blood tests at the gp? now i am reading this feed and it seems maybe we are not getting the right support? would this be a correct statement? I am concerned over this, and the NHS in our area can be very bad. sad face

Help would be appreciated?

Thank you in advance, x

Twittle · 11/05/2010 10:33

Hi Dolly I am sure that gynae care does vary in different areas, I live out in the sticks and our local hospital isn't very big but I guess I was just lucky to have a very good gynae consultant - pure fluke! The only reason why I had a couple of internal scans was to check the effect that Clomid was having on my ovulation i.e. to ensure that I wasn't suddenly producing a huge number of eggs leading to multiple pregnancies and also to check that the dose was actually high enough and that I was producing at least one or two each cycle, therefore, the scan is only normally after the first cycle of clomid as far as I am aware (but I'm no expert . I would mention this to your consultant (who I am assuming has prescribed the clomid) and see what he/she says! Good luck with it it's not that complex or least I didn't find it is you just have to be determined and persevere with it - also try not to let the failed attempts get you down - difficult I know but try and stay positive!

AAE · 11/05/2010 10:39

I conceived 2nd cycle (10 yrs ago)and thought I had missed ovulation (we had a row!) however I got pregnant that month so must have conceived around day 18ish as that was the only possible time....! (we had made up!)

PS - 2nd and third pregnancies happened quick no problms!

Dolly99 · 11/05/2010 13:15

thank you for your replies!

I am very positive about starting Clomid, as have read do many wonderful good news stories which make me happy!

do you go to your consultant for the tablets and blood tests each month? or your gp? we have been given slips for bloods to give our gp? But have had no mention of scans? our first appt is next week... i had to have thyroid blood tests friday just gone to make sure that was ok before they could start us on the course.

thanks for your help so far! x

Twittle · 11/05/2010 14:19

I went to the consultant for the tablets as I was referred by the GP due to suspected annovulation and then he did the two internal scans after my first two cycles of clomid but I had the bloods done at the GP surgery. I don't think all consultants would routinely scan those on clomid I think it is down to the individual consultant as mine told me that he always scanned after the first cycle but other consultants didn't - sorry I know that's not very helpful!

Dolly99 · 11/05/2010 14:55

no thats help, thank you!

after trying for over a year me and my husband went to seek help, it turned out that i had a drmoid cyst in my ovarie that was 13cm big - luckily benine and they saved my ovarie, this has stopped periods, and this was removed in jan and have ovulated for the frst time on my onw last month... but to kick start things and help concieve we are trying clomid. just want to make sure we get it all right and dnt miss the opportunity, as it seems like if its taken correctly its a miracle worker... in some cases... lucky cases. ;)

so our gp refered us to our specialist consultant, had op, now back to gp with letter infomring him of the clomid acton... jyst concerned that the gp is not clued up in it and will now know when to make me take the tablets? ....

Dolly99 · 18/05/2010 17:00

now, im taking some hormone tablets to induce my bleeding as of tomorrow, which i start tomorrow for 5 days.

then am taking clomid for days 2-6 of bleed. I have not been advised to have scans and I know most people have?

also.... when is the best ovulation days? as I do not my cycle days, most say average is 28 days? but some say 34? would you say to do 10 days after first day of period for the best 5 days of ovulation?

thank you in advance!
