To ovulate or not to ovulate..

Hi,

This is my first post on MumsNet (scary!)...

I have a question about tracking your BBT in relation to ovulation. I recently (2 months ago) started tracking my BBT and in both months noticed a definite temperature spike in the middle of the month, which I thought indicates ovulation.

However, went to a doctor last week and she ordered an internal scan to check out my ovaries. Results showed my right ovary had a hemorrhagic cyst measuring 40mm by 30ml - doctor said this means ovulation has not happened yet and - because the cyst is so large - that ovulation won't happen this month. (My left ovary had several small cysts/follicles.)

This was on Thursday. On Friday morning however I got my usual mid-month BBT spike and today my temperature continues to be elevated.

So, I'm confused. Does this mean I have ovulated or not?

The doctor seemed CERTAIN I would not ovulate due to the cyst. Is it possible to have a BBT spike but not ovulate? Or could the doctor be wrong and I actually ovulated just hours after the scan?

She has ordered hormone tests etc for next month so I should know more in a few weeks, but I'm confused.

The doctor also seemed VERY sceptical about bbt charting in general and was very dismissive when I suggested that my temperature spikes meant I felt certain I should be ovulating. Is this attitude among doctors common??

Don't want you to go unanswered, so I'm bumping this for you.

I don't know the answers to your questions, but I think it is possible to have the raised temps without having ovulated.

AtillatheMeerkat would probably know... hopefully she'll see this and can advise!

Hope you get it all sorted out soon.

Hey thanks for responding Spilt.

Hopefully someone with more experience of this bbt malarky can advise me!

YallaYalla I can't really advise you, being new to charting as well, but justwanted to congratulate you on your username! It could be described as my motto!

Shameless bump to see if anyone knows answer to this!

Does anyone out there know if a rise in BBT means you have definitely 100% ovulated? Or can your BBT rise and stay above coverline even if you didn't?

Attila - whoever and wherever you are, it appears you are the fount of all knowledge, come enlighten me
