is there any reason apart from obese women have a higher risk of mc as to why clomid isnt prescribed to overweight women. what would the top weight of a 5ft 7inc woman be before its prescribed?

I am 5ft4in and was 93kg when I was presribed it.

So that was a BMI 35.5 although that was nearly 5 years ago. The guidelines may have changed since then.

yellowflowers · 29/03/2010 23:57

I have bmi of 40 and just been given it (not nhs though). In fact I've been given lowest possible dose because my 8 follicles each side (pco) apparently means I'm likely to respond well to it.

laurielou · 30/03/2010 09:05

I hav BMI of 28 & have just had first dose on NHS (13 stone in old money!). I did see a leaflet that mentioned somehing about if BMI over 30, but coz mine wasn't I didn't read it. Sorry! Don't know if it was just talking abou dangers. No-one batted an eyelid at my weight or anything though.

DungunGirl · 30/03/2010 14:24

My local NHS trust will not perscribe it to anyone with a BMI over 30.

I got mine down to 34 and then fell pregnant naturally....so maybe there is reason behind their madness....

yellowflowers, how much did it cost you if you dont mind me asking.

I don't mind at all Tayto. The clomid is fine - £15 for ten tablets. It's the £200 for the initial appt and £150 for sperm test and £300 for ovarian reserve test etc that is not fine though if you had these on nhs already then they can sometimes use them. Iui starts next month and is likely to be about £800.

yellowflowers thanks for telling me, i had all the tests done about 2 to 2 1/2 years ago. i had things like sperm test for dh, i had dye in tubes etc, and all came back ok excpet that i had pcos, anyway consultant was really rude and came bouncing in to my hospital room yelling "theres nothing wrong with you that loosing weight wouldnt cure" !!!! honest i nearly died. yes i know im overweight but did he have to be so cold about it. my husband and i fell out about it for a while as he blames me which i dont blame him for really. would anyone choose to be fat, no. all i want is someone to give me a chance. would it kill them to put me on clomid and give me the chance. i have booked to see another consultant on the nhs the end of april. i would pay to see someone private if i knew they would give me a try on clomid. when is see this consultant in april could i ask him for a private script or do i need to see him privately for that??? in a word all im looking for is a consultant who is willing to treat an overweight woman with pcos!!!

I totally understand tayto as I have pcos too. What a rude consultant though. My nhs doctor told me to lose weight but not in such a rude manner. And as I told him, I know I am fat and I am trying but I don't think that is the problem here because I come from generations of fat and fertile women. Anyhow things happening very slowly on nhs and they've not told me for sure I can;t have treatment but I am pretty sure from my own research that I can't get it funded so we thought bugger that, I aint getitng younger (though I am only early 30s) so paid for private consultant. We'd had all tests too including the dye in tubes one but they wanted to repeat some of them. They won't just give clomid without checking other things like sperm count and your bloods and giving you a scan though when they've done all that they could then just give you clomid though we decided to do a double whammy and go for clomid with iui - I basically said to the doctor 'what would you advise me to do if I was your wife' and he said clomid with iui and if that doesn't work then injections with iui and then ivf.

I was thinking about buying clomid over internet but two issues. First is that you never know what you are getting is actually clomid, and second is that you are at risk of overstimulation which is when you produce too many eggs - hence the sextuplets or octuplets etc stories that always have a sad ending for the babies and often the mother too. This is apparently especially the case for people with pcos too because we already have too many follicles. That is why a reputable place won't give you clomid without also scanning you throughout the cycle to check this isn't happening - and if it does then they ask you to abandon that cycle.

The private clinic incidentally told me to try to lose weight but very gently and didn't make a deal out of it at all.

Any questions do ask - it is horrible when people just fixate on your weight.

x

Thanks for this thread - I've been worrying a lot about this.

DH and I have been referred to our local fertility unit and I know our PCT does not fund IVF for women with a BMI over 30, Mine is 34 (despite having already lost 10% of my body weight - and continuing).

I'm really hoping not to have to go as far as IVF but hoping my PCT will take the first steps and investigations while I'm still not quite there.

Really concerned that specialist will simply take one look and say go away and come back when you are thinner - difficult to wait when I've been working so hard to get thinner. Plus DH and I not getting any younger and scared there might be something else wrong other than just my weight.

Does anyone have experiences where NHS would compromise in situations like this?

Thanks for any info (or moral support - the wait to see the specialist is killing me!)
