... to fall pregnant if your ovulation test shows you are not ovulating? I had sex with my husband this Saturday, and the condom broke! I am so scared of being pregnant, I had a grade 2 PPB with my second c-section, I am still very anaemic and sore down there, I am not sure my body can take another pregnancy right now. I also had a very heavy period this time, it started on the 5th of March and finished on 16th. So I had sex on a 17th day of my cycle, which should be the most fertile period. I tried my old ovulation sticks that I got when TTC DC2, both showed I am not ovulating, so I decided against morning after pill, I was too scared of bleeding again after taking it. Do you think I still can be pregnant, despite ovulation test showing neg. results? Sorry for a confusing post, I can't think straight right now...

Hi scully, sorry that you are so worried. I am not an expert in any of this, but didn't want your post to go unanswered.

I think that you can get pregnant from sex that occurs when your ovulation stick does not detect a surge. This is because given the right environment a sperm can live up to 5 days and could therefore still be around to meet the egg when you do ovulate. That said, this is only likely if a) you had fertile cervical fluid at the time you had sex (i.e. egg white like), and b) you ovulate within 5 days of the sex. In your case it doesn't seem likely that you will have had fertile fluid one day after the bleeding stopped, but you may have noticed. To say anything about b) would mean knowing more about your usual cycles - i.e. how long into the cycle do you normally ovulate. I'm afraid I don't know whether it is likely that you would ovulate within a few days of your period ending. Having said that, I wonder what caused the heavy bleed - your anaemia? If, as you say, your body is not in a good way for a pregnancy, as I understand it, it is unlikely that you will ovulate - apparently the body tends to wait until it is reasonably prepared - e.g. stress or illness can delay ovulation.

Sorry not to be able to give you a straight yes or no answer, and I hope others who know more may be able to help. But in summary from what I have said above, it seems unlikely that you are, or will get pregnant.

How are you doing?

scully777 · 24/03/2010 16:14

Hi lilysma! I am a bit better, not as worried, but wont relax until the period arrives. DH is thrilled with the idea of another one, but I honestly cant go through it again. Thanks for your kind post, it made me feel sooo much better!

Best of luck scully and remember not to get too stressed if your period doesn't arrive when you think it is due - it may well be because of delayed ovulation, which would give you a longer cycle.
