Questions for a Fertility Clinic appointment...

I have a friend who has been ttc for around 14mths now and has been referred to the local fertility clinic. I told her that she should write down any questions that she has before she goes, as it's likely that she'll be a bit overwhelmed during the appointment and won't be able to think of anything. The thing is, she's already a bit anxious (understandably) and has had a blank about what to find out.

Could anyone give us any advice as to what kind of questions she should ask? Or any tips as to what she can do to get the most out of the appointment? (IYKWIM) She's putting so much hope into this (again, understandable) that she wants to make the most of it and doesn't want to come away thinking that there's something she should have thought of. Sorry if I'm rambling now!

Hope you can help.

i would suggest she take an hour and read through the threads under the fertility topic here. The issues/questions being discussed there are likely to be the ones your friend will need to have answered at the clinic.

Hi there.

I think she needs to get the consultant she sees to explain her blood tests to her, ask for a sperm test for her husband if he hasn't had one alread.

Also ask about how many cycles of treatment she can have on the NHS and what the criteria is i.e does she have to be over or under a certain age.

Do you know if she has had any tests?

Also she needs to ask about her cycle lengths and what they could mean i.e if they are very long could that be a sign that she is not ovulating or if she may have PCOS etc. Or if they are too short could that mean something.

Really she would do well to read the website for the clinic if there is one.

I would assume if she has been trying for this long then she will be aware of how her cycles are and stuff like that?

Have they had any fertility tests at all up to now?

If not then the first thing that will be done is a blood test and scan for her and a sperm test for him - that may or may not be done at that first appointment depending on the clinic and what point in her cycle she is.

Until the results of those tests there aren't really too many questions to ask, it will depend on what they find.
