Sticky Jizz - bad for fertility?

Hi,

Me and my chap have been ttc for 4 years, with little success. I think it's because his jizz is too sticky and glutenous, but the two ocassions on which he has had semen analyses done, have not come up with anything in particular.

So, first of all...if I manage to get the printed results from the Gp (rather than just the statement 'meh, results seem okay', what should I be looking under (Viscosity?)?

And secondly, is sticky jizz indeed an issue?

By the way...I realise it could be many things causing our probs - diagnosed 'unexplained'...but it's sticky jizz that's on my mind today!

I know nothing about sticky jizz. I would say my other half has sticky jizz, but we manage the first bit of getting pregnant ok. Doesn't sperm go very sticky to start with and then get less sticky? Sure I read that somewhere.

AttilaTheMeerkat · 22/02/2010 14:05

Don't get hung up on sticky semen (sorry but I actually find your other description a bit ick, not just to say a bit crude).

If you have been ttc for 4 years without success then there is likely to be a problem with either one or both of you equally.

What tests have you both had done to date and when were these carried out?. Any test result over six months old should be discounted; you need up to date test results on both of you.

You should be referred to the subfertility dept as a matter of course if this has not already been done.

It is all too easy to be fobbed off.
"Unexplained subfertility" is infact NO diagnosis at all; all this means is that they have failed to find out to date what is wrong. Often it is a "diagnosis" given to patients when not enough tests have been done or even properly.

sparkledaisy · 22/02/2010 14:15

Hi, this is a problem my husband and I have been worrying about too.

We've had lots of tests (everything except a laparoscopy) and everything has come back absolutely fine. We have been ttc for two years with no confirmed pregnancies.

I read that doing Kegel exercises can help with this so my husband has been doing these for the last few weeks although no change yet. I'd be interested to hear other people's experiences.

ChoChoSan · 22/02/2010 14:31

Hi there - thanks for your responses folks...we have been under investigation - and agree Atilla that 'unexplained' is no diagnosis. Two pregnancies in 4 years (both m/cs), one of which the result of IUI, the other natural immediately after first m/c.

We are about to go down IVF route, but this has always played on my mind a bit. If I find anything out elsewhere, I will post it here, but still interested if anyone has the same experience.

Hi,
I don't think it being sticky to start with is a problem, but it should 'liquify' after a certain amount of time (can't remember how many minutes) and its this liquifaction that they look for when doing detailed semen analysis. All they record on the result form is if liquifaction is complete or incomplete. If it doesn't turn runny after a while then the sperm might have problems swimming out of the seminal fluid apparently...But all semen is sticky to begin with.

Who'd have thought secondary infertility would have turned me into a semen expert, still every cloud and all that.....

SomethingSuitablyWitty · 23/02/2010 09:01

Earplugs- thanks for sharing that. I guess you learn something new everyday. Semen liquefaction eh? Something else to worry about

sandcastles · 23/02/2010 09:14

It's sperm,...or semen!

Jizz, ffs! makes you sound about 15!

Headbanger · 23/02/2010 11:37

Unless you unfailingly refer to vaginas, vulvas, penises, genitalia, breasts, anuses and cervical mucous, without once resorting to colloquialisms of any kind, then can you not remove the sprig of lavender from your fundaments and deal with 'jizz'? For pity's sake...

On a related and admirably plain-speaking note: the OM's jizz tends towards the not-terribly-uniform-in-consistency. I do tend to worry about this. Not thought about its relative stickiness though, I must say.

RunLyraRun · 23/02/2010 11:39

It's NOT sperm. Sperm are the little wrigglers within the liquid. The liquid itself is semen.

Or spunk.

Or jizz.

PollyPoo · 23/02/2010 11:43

Er, actually I call it jizz. Who cares what we call it, as long as we're comfortable with it? What I find really annoying, not to mention rude, is people trying to enforce their own personal preferences on others.

Scorpette · 23/02/2010 13:12

Can Mumsnet 1910 please advise me as to what I can call a gentleman's 'expression'? Spunk? Jizz? Man milk? Love butter? White weewee?

(*Don't Google it, I made it up )

barkfox · 23/02/2010 14:11

Apols to OP, I have no knowledge of jizz-viscosity's effect on TTC - but JIZZ is now my favourite word for my partner's Flirty Squirts.

I don't think anyone needs to get worked up about the language, do they? I mean, each to their own, etc.

And it's not like you're trying to shove it down our throats...

Ariesgirl · 23/02/2010 15:39

"shove it down our throats"....ha ha hahhhh! God, if you can't say the j word on here, where on earth can you?

Ariesgirl · 23/02/2010 15:40

Oh sorry OP, I have no ideas either as to the viscosity or otherwise of jizz, sorry, semen.

ChoChoSan · 23/02/2010 16:37

God, you're obsessed with jizz, you lot...all I want to know is if I can blame my man

One last jizz related comment - when I was a student in the uni paper we did an article on students donating their sperm for a bit of extra cash. The headline was Jisom Capitalism.

McDreamy · 23/02/2010 19:16

If offended by the word jizz don't watch the link but I couldn't resist

ginhag · 23/02/2010 21:06

I can't stand the expression 'babydust' or 'babydancing'. In fact I find they truly offend my sensibilities....but I don't charge on to a thread where someone is actually asking a question to deride their choice of phrase...especially if I have no advice on the subject...

I have no problems with the word jizz however. Is a matter of taste, not mn law, surely????

Plus I think for those having a hard time conceiving sometimes it feels a bit more lighthearted to refer to their fella having to 'do the jizzybizz' rather than 'he had to self-pleasure until he was able to produce a semen deposit'....

Although I am now rather liking flirty squirts

know nuffin re viscosity tho sorry op!

ginhag · 23/02/2010 21:11

mcdreamy I just snorted wine out of my nose...thanks for the link!!!

whomovedmychocolate · 23/02/2010 21:12

This seems to have collapsed into a big discussion of semantics.

Anyway, DH has very viscose semen - it can cause problems apparently - did for us, but we overcame them naturally. What's interesting is that his sperm count is very high, exceptionally so, but is like a condensed version, lots of swimmers, not much river IYSWIM.

whomovedmychocolate · 23/02/2010 21:13

On the positive side....no wet patch!

Cokie · 23/02/2010 22:20

I would beg the question is it (the jizz) always sticky? In my experience the consisitency tends to vary depending on how often it has been expelled (days/few days/weeks). I wonder if anyone can add if watery thin jizz is better for TTC than thick sticky jizz? I would be interested to know that too.

Jizz jizz jizz jizz jizz, i love the word.

ChoChoSan · 24/02/2010 08:58

Thanks, Chocolate...'Lots of swimmers, but not much river '

I'm thinking watery = good, as Chocs says, they need a river to swim in. I think.

I will have to get him to start drinking lots of fluids...there's prbably some old wives tales about pineapple juice or something!

I'm interested in how you overcame this problem naturally?

My husband's sperm is also very thick. His sperm count came back fine but I'm not sure if they checked for liquidity. He's been doing Kegel exercises, although they don't seem to have helped, and drinks gallons of water a day (and no caffeine or alcohol) so I know that's not a problem.
