I have been doing these opk since the day after my period.
always get a BFN
But today...i got a faint line.
it says on the packaging that this is a negative.
given that i have never ever even got a hint of a line, could this really be negative? REALLY?
Could it be the beginning of the surge, or the ending?
I am SO desperate to have a baby, i need some good news

Hi meatntattypie
Please don't despair, can you answer these q's for me and i'll try to help.
what day of your cycle are you on? what opks are you using? have you got a regular cycle? have you any fertility problems diagnosed? opks are far from perfect and can be next to useless if you have PCOS.

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:19

Day 14.
No regular cycle, last month it was 35 days.
got opks from friend who has used them and succesfully got pregnant 1st month (Friend has severePCOS)
fertility problems yes.

GhoulsAreLoud · 20/02/2010 13:22

I knew someone on a ttc board who never got a positive either.

She has a DD now.

They did have unexplained fertility issues but got BFP first go of IUI which I understand just gives nature a helping hand and isn't a treatment for a specific problem if that makes any sense.

Some people's surges just don't register as far as I know.

COuld you try the smiley face ones instead? Much easier than trying to decide if a line is dark enough.

bearofverylittlebrain · 20/02/2010 13:24

opks and pcos are a recipe for disaster in my experience. pcos opks and clomid worked for a friend but only when she had the clomid and was being monitored by a gynae as well. before that they simply let to heartache and worry - like you're experiencing from the sound of things.
have you had any treatment for pcos?

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:25

well, i class these sticks as "lucky" nay "holy" as this batch were used by freinds sister....PCO, 1st month pregnant.
passed onto friend...severe PCOS on clomid (last cycle this month) and again pregnant.
another friend wants to "touch" the sticks before she does the lottery this week, so its a bit of a standing joke with this batch.

SO i want to continue with them.

iui does kind of give nature a helping hand but the clinic create/control the egg growth with drugs and then inject the sperm into the uterus at the time of ovuation. but the docs are controlling the cycle with drugs and can see how you are responding.

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:28

i have not been diagnosed as having PCOs.
I have no diagnosis.
I just take about 6-12 months to get pregnant, then have mcs. (5 up to now)

We put the effort in each month, and always have a bfn. SO i wanted to just (out of curiosity) see what my body is doing.
dhs sperm is fine and healthy, my hormones are low, so it has been suggested that i take clomid.
wanted to just observe for a month 1st.

OP posts:
bearofverylittlebrain · 20/02/2010 13:31

well contiue with them then, though i expect (honestly, sorry) that a positive attitude is more likely to be reason you succeed. i wish you all the best but if i was you i'd be going to the doc asking for a referal to a fertility unit to get some clomid.

activate · 20/02/2010 13:32

If you're only on day 14 keep going. This is most probably the start of a surge - but you may not ovulate until day 16, 19, 25 who knows?

It's your first cycle of using OPKs you need to work out when you ovulate this cycle. Then do it again for the next few cycles to see if there's any pattern

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:33

been referred to gynae consultant, we dont have fertility unti in these parts

he suggested clomid, based on one blood test.
i wasnt convinced.
Thanks for your advice. I Know NOTHING about fertility things.

bearofverylittlebrain · 20/02/2010 13:33

sorry x-posts re the clomid. good luck with it. i got a bfp on clomid (though it turned out to be ectopic) so i'm a believer in in

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:34

day 14 is early days then yes?????

OP posts:
nancydrewrocks · 20/02/2010 13:36

If your last cycle was 35 days you will not have ovulated until day 21 ish. The vast majority of woman ovulate 14 days before their period.

It is the time before ovulation that varies so greatly and is the reason for massively varying cycle lengths in different woman.

Therefore if you last period was anything to go by then you would not expect to ovulate for another week.

good luck.

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:38

will need to be bding allot then over the next week or 2

Things you probably need to know about fertility:
not everyone has a 28 day cycle (as you know!) and even if they do they don't ovulate on day 14. Ovulation occurs 10-14 days before your period arrives, some docs insist it is always 14 days -hence ov'ing on day 14 of a 28 day cycle - but this isn't true. ov'ing on day 16,17 or 18 of a 28 day cycle is very common. this misconception also affects the results of a so-called day21 blood test as again day 21 is assumed to be 7 days after ov and 7 days before period. this is not the case for most people.
you don't always ovulate in a cycle (even without pcos) it's been said on here - i don't know the medical opinion - that as many as 1 in 10 cycles can be an-ovulatory.

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:44

that would explain why i take so long to concieve. kinda knew that this was an issue.

and yet i have the most distinctive symptoms of ovulation every month strangely.

i just wanted to shine a bit of a light in a very dark and unknown area of my body iyswim.

i have concluded that i will need some help, if that be clomid, and then hormone suppliments when i next get pregnant to give us the chance.

i am 40 this year.
i have had 5 mcs
i am desperate now for another child
i am desperate full stop.

bearofverylittlebrain · 20/02/2010 13:46

have you had m/c investigations? sounds like hanging on to the pgs is the problem rather than getting pg (though that is of course the first step)
really feel for you multiple m/cs are soul destroying

Indaba · 20/02/2010 13:53

Bit off subject, but I started trying to have kids late in life....went to GP in Oz for advice.....she said have sex on day 8,10,12,14,16 of each month, nothing else (and throw away the sticks).....worked ok for us......I used to use "piss sticks" prior to that (to avoid pregnancy).....they never gave me proper readings, I always thought my fertility was shot........but method above worked nicely for us.........good luck!

activate · 20/02/2010 13:55

"The vast majority of woman ovulate 14 days before their period.

It is the time before ovulation that varies so greatly and is the reason for massively varying cycle lengths in different woman."

Sorry but that's not right. And even if it was, which it wasn't, it's of no help to know that you ovulated 14 days before you bleed. But it isn't right at all there is as much difference between time before ovulation as after it

activate · 20/02/2010 13:56

Surely after 3 miscarriages you get NHS investigation and support.

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 13:57

no investigations other than some blood tests
which all came back as normal.

OP posts:
activate · 20/02/2010 13:58

but you are suffering recurrent miscarriages and obviously don't have a conception problem.

you need to go and shout at your GP

activate · 20/02/2010 14:00

and you need to educate yourself.

google is your firend

www.sharedjourney.com/miscarriage/recurrent.html

bearofverylittlebrain · 20/02/2010 14:01

activate - it's not much help on that cycle but over a few cycles it can help to get an idea of what is normal for you. the time between ov and period is called the luteal phase and i don't think it's often longer than 15 days? I know with temping if you have high temps for 16 days it's highly likely you're pg - implying a 15 day lp is the max? lp can be as low as 10 days and still result in pg, but i think 10 days is about the shortest as otherwise the embryo doesn't have the chance to embed.
none of this is from scientific knowledge just stuff i've picked up over the past few years of ttc

meatntattypie · 20/02/2010 14:01

google is indeed my fire end
but there is SO much info, i wanted to ask you all as you have lots of first hand experience.
