Hiu,

On advice of specialist nhgs endocrionologist and gynocologist at uch we are going to start iui with stimulation. Going to do this privately as probably do not qualify for pct funding and finding out and waiting for letters and getting right person to talk to right person is taking forever, and that's just to find out whetehr we get on waiting list or not. Going to book an appt in next week or so.

Am overcome with fear now treatment going to start soon.

Is it interfering with nature? Obv silly worry because every time we take a painkiller or use a condom or wash our hands we are interfering with nature.

I don't want twins or triplets (though obv I want twins or triplets rather than no babies at all)

What if it doesn't work - one step closer to ivf?

What if it does - work - terrifying prospect.

Is all this normal? Any advice?
Thank you.

Just a few thoughts yellowflowers- how much is it costing? what are the success rates?

I only ask because we are skipping IUI and going straight to IVF.

Yes it is normal to have fears and reservation about treatment. Most clinics will offer a counseling service where you can talk about your fears. Having fears and talking to a counselor about them does not make you a bad potential parent or in any way un-normal. I can't remember if the counseling is mandatory anyway.

Go to the HFEA website and have a look at success rates.

Here is the cost of the clinic we used www.isisfertility.com/fees/, the important thing to consider is that the fees for the ops themselves don't include the drugs, and the drugs can easily be several hundred pounds (clinics in London would probably be more expensive I guess).

If the prospect of twins or triplets really frightens you, try going straight to IVF (with Blastocyst). IVF has twice the success rate of IUI in any case.

You probably won't start treatment right away in any case, you will need a number of blood tests first (I seem to recall having to do HIV and Hepatitis) before you actually start treatment. You might want to try getting these done on the NHS since these can be very expensive.

Don't be frightened of IVF's, they are more annoying, expensive, emotional (the drugs used have hormonal side effects) and tiring then they are frightening.

Yellow I just wanted to say that everything you?re feeling is totally normal and that starting any new treatment is terrifying. My Doc encouraged me to try IUI for 6 months before IVF, I?m glad we did because that?s what finally worked for us. If ?interfering with nature? is a worry them I would say IUI less invasive than IVF and the stims I was prescribed were naturally sourced FSH rather than synthetically produced, if that?s important to you.
Also when you have your scans you?ll know how many follicles have been stimulated so if it?s more than one you?ll know before you trigger. I had 3 rounds of stims and only had one lead follicle each time. TBH my biggest hurdle was learning to self inject but I was so surprised at how easy I found this after years of a needle phobia!
Counselling is offered along with the treatment too which may be beneficial to you.
Hope that helps, good luck x

Thanks everyone. I don;t want to go straight to ivf as doctor thinks iui has good chance of working also a third of the price even including all the scans etc. Guess I just have to get on with it now.

I;ve had all the tests done nhs so hopefully we can start asap.

Not worried about unnatural drugs - I just mean all assisted copnception seems to be meddling with nature doesn't it ie nature doesn't want us to have a baby. But that is silly argument and I hold no truck with it really.

As for twins, as my dh says, we will take what we are given.

think not that you are meddling with nature, but more that nature is posing a challenge to you.

you could argue that if you were to reject everything un-natural then that list would include planes, cars, tv, mobile, computer, etc...

yellowflowers · 15/02/2010 11:15

yes that's exactly what I mean liamsdaddy - hence I know it is silly concern. But nice to see it as nature posing a challenge. x
