Talk to me about evaporation lines vs faint positives.

Hi,
Ive done 2 clearblue +/- tests. One yesterday first thing and the second today first thing. Yesterday, nothing until bang on 10min then faint but thin blue line. Today, nothing again until about 9min (Ive had 3kids and always had an immediate positive)but this time not a thin line but as thick as the horizontal line. Still faint though.
Im on DPO 12 if that helps.

Are these likely to be evap lines or not given the time? As right on the time limit I'm just not sure. Both were blue if that makes a difference.
I'd be grateful for any thoughts good or bad.

BTW, whilst boobs dont hurt, the idea of DH touching them on Sat night made me heave when normally Im very keen.

I don't know what DPO is.... anyway,I had v faint lines with both babies at first, although I am sorry but I can't remember how long they took to show.To me it sounds like a positive reading as the woman on the helpline when I had my faint line was really certain that it was a positive even though the line was very hard to see.She said any line at all is a positive.Try again first thing in the morning !good luck!

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 21:41

Thank you, Hellymelly.
DPO=days post ovulation.

It's just that I'd heard that a true positive appears immediately and any later lines are usually evap lines. Though I've also read that they aren't usually blue or full width.
I only tested cause of the boob thing.

Anyone else?

OP posts:
hellymelly · 01/02/2010 22:00

Oh I was about 12 days post ov too.each day the line got stronger, but the first one was almost like the suggestion of a line, which is why I called the helpline.

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:19

Thanks. I guess I'll just have to test again tomorrow.
I'm just unsure what an evap line looks like. Maybe I'll google. Thanks again!

OP posts:
hellymelly · 01/02/2010 22:26

if it helps I still have my test upstairs, some years old (my dd is five)and it looks much the same as it did then, just a bit darker so it can't change all that much with evaporation!!

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:29

Well I just googled and it seems lines do appear especially with clearblue. However, it all seems to say that they aren't blue but grey. Who knows! Maybe clearer tomorrow!

OP posts:
hellymelly · 01/02/2010 22:31

fingers crossed for you.x

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:32

Thank you for listening.

There's a good solution to this confusion and that's to wait until you're sure you're really late until doing the test. Why does everybody play into the hands of ClearBlue et al and keep buying tests at a time when they really have no clue if they're pregnant or not. There are no benefits at all to finding out so early - if the pregnancy is going to take, then testing will keep for a couple of weeks (and you'll be sure of the result and not be wasting your money).

Sorry to be harsh. Every thread like this makes me want to respond - you're the unlucky one. I genuinely do hope you end up with the result you want, but please wait a while and stop torturing yourself!

BTW, I speak from experience - it took me 4 years to conceive DS so I have been there with bells on.

Dalrymps · 01/02/2010 22:42

I had very faint lines when I first tested that didn't show straight away, more after 5-10 mins. I kept testing every couple of days and the line got a little darker each time. I did start testing a few days before period due though. Anyway it was positive and I'm due 6th March!

As I understand evaporation lines have no colour/pigment to them at all so the fact you say the lines are blue suggest it most likely is a positive! Good luck for testing again in the morning

Just to add, the experience with testing this time was different to the 1st time I got pregnant. The first time I got pg I tested when 5 days late and got a bold line up straight away. This time, even when I tested at 5 days late the line wasn't as bold as the first pregnancy. I tested a while later and it was as bold then. Just pointing this out as it doesn't seem the tests respond exactly the same with each pregnancy.

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:52

Actually Gaelicsheep, it's quite important for me to find out as early as possible. I suffer from HG whilst pg and usually end up being hospitalised at least twice. Therefore, the quicker I can find out, the quicker I can put an action plan together.

OP posts:
gaelicsheep · 01/02/2010 22:55

Well it's your choice. I didn't spot that you'd had three before.

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:55

Thank you Dalrymps. Good to know about the colour thing.

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 22:56

This will be #4 (if positive)
sorry if my post sounded curt. It just is important to find out early for me.

OP posts:
gaelicsheep · 01/02/2010 23:01

That's OK, although I'm amazed you've had 3 already with HG!

I really do feel though that the pg test industry exploits women who are struggling to conceive. Each time I've been pregnant (only on no 2!) I've waited until I'm sure it can't be anything else before buying a test - the disappointment of -ve tests just becomes too much to bear after a while.

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 23:05

I'm sure you're right. When I googled I came across a site where you put a picture of your test up and I'd say about 80% were clearly negative. Certainly what I would consider negative.

I've never actually had a negative test though as my symptoms are usually very obvious, very early. But this is the earliest Ive tested and it was based on the fact that I hated the idea of DH touching my boobs at the weekend.

Maybe I just don't fancy my husband anymore!

Rosalind, a line is a line, as someone else said once you are actually due your af then you'll get a stronger line. you may have ovulated or implanted late which would leave you with a very low hcg level.

hope its the result you want

rosalind12 · 01/02/2010 23:11

Thank you all.
Though Ive just found one forum where people are saying that clearblue are notorious for false positives and that their evap lines are thick blue lines so who knows.

I'll have to wait and see what the morning brings.

OP posts:
hellymelly · 01/02/2010 23:12

Also some of us don't do delayed gratification..
no offense to anyone who has spent ages trying to conceive and getting lots of negative tests.I have only had positives to that isn't my experience.

gaelicsheep · 01/02/2010 23:43

Hellymelly. I suppose it depends how confident you can be that your system's not decided to be that extra couple of days late, just to make doubly sure that you think you're pg when you're not.

I tested +ve at 8 weeks with DS, 7 weeks with this one (the emotions gave it away this time). Had previously had several -ve tests when apparently 2 weeks "late".

rosalind12 · 02/02/2010 09:25

Ah see if I'm pg I will def test positive before 4wks.
Having said that, this mornings test looks just the same. No darker, which is what I was hoping for.

OP posts:
LeeWT · 02/02/2010 09:45

Hi Rosalind did you try different make of test. I find first response good but the line is often faint on them. I think tesco are actually more sensitive than clearblue. Failing that take a digi? Good luck!

Ho Rosalind I just wanted to post on this thread to to say I had the EXACT same thing happen to me yesterday, though tested this morning and had a BFN. Like you my line was big thick and blue so I'm not really sure now, which one, if any are faulty. Let me know how you get on.
