Hi there,
Just wondered if anyone had tried this method and what was their outcome?

I'm referring to the avoid ovulation to concieve a girl and right on ovulation for a boy.

I dont really want to discuss the morals around this issue, ive got very strong reasons for thinking along these lines and just wondered if you lovely ladies had any experience that you could share with me.

thank you muchly.

Hi, I'm interested in this as well and have read loads. Reading similar threads on here you get people who say it works and those who say it's a load of rubbish. After all my reading I'm not sure on the timing methods although it does seem logical. There's also a method called O+12 where you time for 12 hours after ovulation if you want a girl but you have to know exactly when you ovulate. Other things that are said to have sway your odds are diet, suppliments for girl or boy this is said to alter the ph of your CM . Acidic for girls alkaline for boys. It all seems reasonable but of course no method is 100%.

allthreerolledintoone · 19/01/2010 00:15

oh very interest in this thread. How do you find out about diets etc???

bumpybecky · 19/01/2010 00:37

I got a book by Dr Shettles and another by Hazel Chesterman Philip (I think from memory).

We knew we wanted more children after dd1&2 and thought if we could tip the odds, so to speak, we'd like to try for a boy.

I charted basal body temp to try and pinpoint ovulation and spent a few months on the boy diet (made me feel ill!). DH spent time in the evenings just in his boxers, at home in private I hasten to add! (aiming to improve sperm count and quality, increasing chances of boy sperm). I got pregnant fairly quickly and had dd3 not so sucessful at the boy thing then....

Next time I didn't try the diet, didn't bother charting but did use ovulation kits and we only did the deed without protection once per month (after no sex for 5 days to try and increase sperm count), as soon as we got a +ve on the OPK. I figured from the books if we maximised sperm count (no sex before) it increased the chances of the boy sperm. Timing it just after ovulation is supposed to be better for boys too, as the boy sperm are more short lived I think. It took 9 months to conceive, but I was still breastfeeding dd3 most of that time, so not sure if that made things harder.

Anyway whatever we did 'worked' and #4 is a boy

Before I get flamed, we knew we wanted more children before we started trying the natural gender selection thing. We didn't find out the sexes before they were born and there was never any suggestion of terminating a child of the wrong sex. This was a chance of nudging things the way we'd prefer, not anything more sinister.

The diets are pretty grim, high calcium and magnesium and low potassium and sodium for a girl and the other way round for a boy. When you see the diets suggested they are very limited and don't look very healthy to me. I've read of experiments with rats who had ca/mg added to their water it swayed the odds to 64% for a girl or there abouts. Can't remember the boy odds on k/na but it did increase . But neither are that far from the normal 48/52 that you're supposed to have anyway.
Sperm count is said to affect gender as well. Low sperm count for a girl so tight warm pants and hot baths keeping the chaps warm opposite for a boy.

watching with interest.....

xkatyx · 20/01/2010 16:18

I fell pregnant with my daughter on my actual ovulation day, i was poorly after that so forunetly only took the once!!

But i am a very strong believer in the chinese lunar chart, it has 100% worked for every mum i know :-)

good luck.

allthreerolledintoone · 20/01/2010 20:47

anyone have info on the chineese lunar and what does it involve?

verybusyspider · 20/01/2010 23:07

there is a website called ingender here which has loads of info

fwiw I have 3 ds's and don't believe it works you get the children that choose you, it is out of your control but if you want to feel like you are trying something then there are loads of theories to try x

xkatyx · 21/01/2010 12:41

Hust type in chinese lunar chart and it will come up on google, type in your age and the month that you want to concieve.

sheeplikessleep · 21/01/2010 12:47

After DS1, we dtd 6 days prior to ovulation and no closer to ovulation (I was using OPKs) and I thought there was no month I'd fall pregnant that month (DH was working away for a few days afterwards).

I fell pregnant first month and am now expecting DS2. Load of rubbish if you ask me, but we didn't follow diet rules, just the timings.

PS I'm very excited about our second boy, due in 9 weeks!

meemar · 21/01/2010 17:46

looking back DS1 and 2 would both have been conceived around ovulation day, although we didn't plan it that way.

With number 3 we were actually trying to use Natural Family Planning as contraception, and had sex so early in the cycle that I didn't thing I could get pregnant - but did. And she is a girl, so there may be some truth to it.

ShowOfHands · 21/01/2010 17:49

I've never tried for either sex but dd was conceived on the day I ovulated (as I was ovulating actually).

And we've had threads on that Chinese lunar whatsit and its accuracy is around 50/50. So about as accurate as, er, chance! It reckons my dd should be a ds.

gloomgirl · 21/01/2010 17:51

Thank you all so much! I'm off to boots tomorrow to get temperature charts, thermometer and a new persona kit. I plan to temp chart for about 4 months and with the persona I should get a good idea of ovulation and fingers crossed!!!!!

xkatyx · 21/01/2010 20:34

You can get test you pee on that tell you when u ovulate x

Lulumama · 21/01/2010 20:40

I have a DS and a DD conceived on day 13 of a 28 day cycle and the chinese gender thingie said DS should be a dd too

if you feel that strongly, i think there are books you can get re diet to influence cervical mucus, but short of egg selection, i think you can only push the odds so far with the other stuff. you can avoid ovulation, but sperms can live up to 7 days and you just cannot be sure

Gracie14 · 21/01/2010 20:59

In regards to the natural gender selection my friend tried it after having 3 boys, she timed bding to 4 days before ovulation (though didn't do the diet thing) and she had a little girl last month so it seemed to work for her, I had a read of the book and can see how it could work (hazel chesterman)defintely worth a try.

As for the chinese lunar - its not been right for quite a few of my friends babies but has for others, maybe try a bit of both can't hurt anyway :-)

allthree - if you google chinese lunar it will bring up the chart its basically determining the sex by how old you are at the time of conception and the month you concieved. HTH

Gracie14 · 21/01/2010 21:02

I think this shows how slow I type (or think ) sorry if I have repeated what others have said!

sweetkitty · 21/01/2010 21:05

Did the timing thing and am pregnant with a DS after 3 DDs.

But as someone said if you flip a coin chances are the more times you do it one will be heads IYSWIM

Chinese gender chart correct 50% of the time for me, about the same as pure guesswork IMO
