First IUI next week!

Vikks · 17/01/2010 11:34

I?m having my first IUI on Tuesday or Wednesday next week and would love to hear from others who may be in the same boat or anyone who?s had success with this procedure. My previous two cycles I?ve been doing the injections along with timed BD and I was supposed to do another but we?re trying to move things along. I?ve had 13 days of Menopur FSH (the last 4 days double doses) and I?ve been needing 13-15 days the other months, so my scan tomorrow should be good and I?m expecting to pick up my HCG. Does anyone know the usual length of time between trigger and IUI? My clinic told me to go in the following day but I thought it was supposed to be more like 48 hours after.
I was told the procedure itself is quick and painless, just like having a smear. I hope that?s true! Can anyone put me at ease? Do you have to lie still afterwards, or is it straight in and out?
I am quite eager to get it done as trying something new always gets me daydreaming, so I?m very excited. But realistically the odds aren?t very high so I?m trying not to get too carried away. This TTC stuff really is messing with my head! Help please any advice/words of encouragement/buddies would be appreciated.

Hi Vikks - no direct experience of IUI, but plenty of problems of concieving, and yes it completely messes with your head and very difficult to think about anything else sometimes when you're going through it

Just wanted to wish you lots of luck and hope it works out

Vikks · 18/01/2010 09:23

Thanks helenlouisey I hope it works out for you too.

Hi
I had three medicated IUI's (using Gonal F)....the first two were not successful and the third one was; i am now 6 weeks pregnant. So it really can work. I am 34. I had the IUI 36 hours after the trigger shot. The IUI itself is like a smear; I find the speculum unfcomfortable and a bit painful but not too bad; certainly didn't stop it working! I lay for about 10 minutes afterwards and then rested for a couple of days. Really hope it goes well, keep us posted. xxxx

PicknMix · 18/01/2010 19:50

I'm going for a meeting with my clinic next Monday to discuss starting IUI (its taken 3.5yrs of ttc and over a year of that to get to this point, good old NHS!) so, although no words of encouragement, will be watching your thread as am very interested and can totally understand your impatience

Can you think of any questions I should go armed with??

Best of luck

PnM x

lots33 - Congratulations! You give me hope. I love hearing of successes, I hope I?m next. The procedure doesn?t sound too bad, I?m sure I?ve had worse.

I went for my scan today terrified that I might have over stimulated and found out that I?m not ready yet! The nurse said that most women have about 7 days of injections before there are ready and I?m doing 16 this cycle (5 days double dose). All that and I?ve got just one follicle at 14mm. I suppose it?s better that having to stop because I?ve got too many?..but still, would 2 follicles be greedy?
Well Wednesday I?m back for another scan and they think that my IUI should be Thursday or Friday now. Watch this space?

PicknMix - Good luck with the appointment and the NHS! I would start with questions like; How long before I can start the treatment?!!! There?s nothing like missing a cycle and that feeling of treading water, it frustrates the hell out if me. DH and I started out on the NHS route and after six months of waiting for appointments and scans we ?caved? and went private. So now we?re at the point where we can?t really afford a baby! But you live and learn!
I?m still learning about IUI myself, there seems to be loads of different ways of doing it. I?m giving myself injectable Meds and running up and down to the clinic every two days for scans. When my follicles are ready I?ll have my trigger shot and then the IUI the following day. But some people do IUI with Clomid and then have just the trigger shot and then the IUI. So you could run through all the pros and cons of the different Meds at your appointment.
Also my last 2 cycles were called ?IUI? by the clinic but we were doing timed BDing after the trigger shot. Lots of variation as you can see, I hope that helps.

Hi Vikks

I had two cycles of IUI six years ago, with Menupur. The first time I had two follicles and did not get pregnant, the second time I had one follicle and got pregnant My daughter is now 5. The trigger was given (from my memory) 36 hours before IUI treatment.

The actual IUI is uncomfortable but not really painful and lasts a few minutes only. I lay still for about 15 to 20 minutes just to relax but was told the sperm was right up in the correct place so would not be a problem for me to move about. My hubby was there to drive me home. Was advised not to do anything strenuous like did out a pond or move furniture though.

I was 39 at the time of our second IUI.

I don?t know how old you are but I am guessing you are younger than me! (Correct me if I am wrong).

I really hope it will go well for you.

I hope this is encouraging for you.

I wish you all the very best and to all others here. There is an assisted conception thread on Mumsnet which is quite helpful and if you need support this does seem to be a good place to get it.

Congratulations to lots33.

All the best, Vikks, helenlouisey and PicknMix.

Thanks Italiangreyhound it's great to hear that it worked for you. I just can't wait to get it done, this is going to be a tough 2WW!
I'm 32 now so I know I've got that on my side too but I'm so impatient to be a mum it seems never-ending. We've been receiving medical help for 2 years, so I'm praying that our wait is nearly over. Come on IUI!!!

Hi again Vikks....just to say that to reassure that I only had one good size follicle too the time it worked. One is all you need! My second attempt I had 6 and so they had to remove three, needless to say it didn't work!

Vikks · 20/01/2010 21:20

Thanks lots33 My IUI is tomorrow morning!!!

I had a scan today which showed I've got quite a few 14mm follicles and one big juicy 20mm. Had my trigger the clinic while I was there and it's all happening tomorrow! No sleep for me tonight.

Vikks

Praying for you that it works.

All the best.

Italiangreyhound · 21/01/2010 20:17

Vikks How did it go, I mean was it OK?

Vikks · 21/01/2010 20:45

All done and dusted!!! That was weird but not painful at all and quite quick. I've had a few cramps this afternoon but nothing major. I guess now I've just got to stay sane over the next 2 weeks.... We'll see..

I didn't get any info on BDing? Where you told to do it on the same day as the IUI or wait? Does it make a difference?

Italiangreyhound · 29/01/2010 19:31

Hi guys,

I'm due to have my first IUI in 3 weeks. Is there anything I should do to prepare? I haven't been told if I'll be on meds with it or not.

Vikks · 02/02/2010 22:05

So I was going to wait until 14 DPO but I caved at 12... glad I did! BFP!!!!

It was the sore boobs that did it, I never get them and I just felt different. A big thank you for all your encouraging words. I can't believe it, IUI works!!!

Go for it Carpricorn!

islegrin · 02/02/2010 22:11

CONGRATS Vikks!!! Wow, that's great to hear! BFP on your first IUI!!! I hope the entire pregnancy goes as easily for you!

Capricorn normally the drugs to help you develop follies is started on one of the first few days of your cycle (CD2-CD4) and your doctor should give you detailed instructions regarding that. Sometimes it's pills and sometimes it's injections depending on your situation. Then they'll monitor you via scan until it's time for the trigger shot. The actual IUI itself feels similar to a pap smear, a bit uncomfortable but not bad. As to what to do to prepare... eat well, get enough rest, take folic acid and generally take care of yourself! Best of luck!

yellowflowers · 02/02/2010 22:22

oh wow vikks that is brilliant - congratulations. xxxxx

Italiangreyhound · 02/02/2010 22:38
