Attempting IVF Age 40+

Hi there,

I am 45 years old (46 in March), TTC #4. I had my youngest just shy of my 42nd birthday. I started TTC again in Nov-08 and became PG first try, only to m/c at 7 weeks in Jan-09. Since then have tried naturally and also used Clomid for 7 months (with IUIs for 4 of those).

I am awaiting an IVF cycle which will start near the end of February. My FSH is high (or when it's not, my estradiol is), my AMH is not good and my antra follicular count is low. But, I want to give it a shot anyway (baby crazy I think). If I don't produce at least 4 good sized follicles, the cycle will be converted to IUI.

I'm a little excited and nervous to take the shots. Hopefully my ovaries can be jumpstarted! I will be on the pill for about 2-3 weeks right before the injections.

Anyone else out there trying at such a mature age? I live in Canada and I know all of the clinics here won't try after about age 43.

Hi - I'm not sure it's true you can't get IVF after 43 in UK, because I know a woman at work who gave birth last year aged 46 after IVF. But then I don't know where she DID get treatment, so maybe she went overseas on the quiet.

Still - she's proof it definitely can happen!! Good luck!

Hi Hopeful45 and sweetsherry

When I checked by phoning around, a few years back, clinics in England all had different ages at which they stopped offering IVF. The ages ranged quite a bit, 45 was quoted by a few, however some also said 48 and older. The Lister in London takes older women as well as younger and had a good reputation. We chose to go with Care Fertility, which has many clinic in the UK. This is for private fertility treatment.

The ages are much younger than this if you are going on the NHS.

I have one dd, aged 5, conceived through IUI and have been ttc again for about four and a half years. Had one MC in that time.

Although we have tried Clomid and had IUI, and one abandoned IVF attempt, we were told that donor eggs would be our best bet. We have been on the waiting list here for about a year and hope to start treatment very soon.

I am over 40 (44 now).

I have also put posts on the assisted conception thread.

All the best for your treatment.
