Hi, i'm new here and could use some help on deciding what method of conception to use. I got pergnant at the end of 2008 on the pill and yes i was taking it correctly and at the same time every night and i was not on any antibiaticsor sick before or after taking it so everyone was surprised since i'm only 21 now. After thye birth of my daughter who is now 6 months i tried the injection but i reacted badly to it and to the patch. The doctor recommended the mirena coil but my mum knew someone who had it and it moved and got pergnant somehow it got inside the baby's head and she had to have an abortion the doctor said that this was verrrrrrrrrry rare to happen and verrrrrrrry rare that the coil moves place and that if i did get pergnant on it i could have a risky pergnacy but getting pergnant on it was extremely rare so i would like some advice on it and what would you ladies recommend i try next???
Thank you

I had a Mirena coil in place for about 18 months and had it removed in September as my DP and I decided to TTC.

I liked it and on my recommendation my sister had one fitted as well. She has had no issues with it. It's probably better than any other method of conception I have tried. I would have one fitted again.

Having it fitted was slightly uncomfortable, certainly not painful. I had period pain style cramping for a couple of days afterwards. Removal was quick and completely painless.

I had very mild cramping - completely bareable - for about 2 months as my body got used to it but after that I didn't feel a thing. My DP didn't like the removal string - said he could feel it (I think he may just have imagined he could feel it) - but he got used to it and stopped noticing.

A big benefit is that by 6 months after fitting your periods will have reduced to extremely light (with no period pains at all)to non-existent. Fantastic!

Since having it removed my cycle has been a bit erratic and whilst it is gradually settling down this has taken 3-4 months. However as I am over 40 I put this down to my age not the IUS.

I did put on about 3 lbs in weight when I first had the device fitted but nothing like the 7-10lbs and increase in breast size I used to experience on the pill. The weight dropped off immediately I had the device removed.

Hope this helps!

Yes it did but i would still feel better if more people gave their opions about it.
Thanks.

I've had my for 6 years (really ought to get to the FP clinic to get it changed) and think it's great. I had mine fitted after suffering from super long heavy periods that lasted for months at a time.

It was a little uncomfortable during insertion but that's probably because i've not had kids (but love mumsnet, so shoot me!) and had a bit of spotting for the first three months. My periods have completely gone now although i do still get bloating and tender norkage every month. You can feel the threads occasionally but they soften up in time and you could ask your Dr to trim them if they were really bothering you.

Over 2 years with it in here and it was awful for me...over 2 stones weight gain was just one of the side effects that you aren't told about. I bled continuously for 9 months too...was extremely upsetting and costly and ruined all my underwear. I would never have it again ~ ever!

solo · 11/01/2010 00:07

oh and mood swings; total anger almost all the time ~ pms was nothing in comparison. Spotty at age 45 for the first time in my life, greasy hair...I could go on.

jellybeans · 11/01/2010 00:11

I have had 2, 3 fittings (one went wrong and was agony). Had first removed after 18 months due to spots/weight gain but they (spots) didn't go away and got them again after my next baby when I had no coil so think it was post baby hormones causing that rather than the mirena. It's not perfect and there are risks and annoyances like with any contraception. It is worth a try though.

Ilovechristmas · 11/01/2010 00:16

I had it for 7 years and it was fab No side effects, best thing was I had no periods!! Good luck with whatever you decide

differentnameforthis · 11/01/2010 00:48

I had it for 3 months & had it removed after suffering excruciating pain, that caused me to double over (and almost drop my 6mth old in the process). It seems that it gave me an infection. Which saw me on 3 different types of antibiotics, for 2 weeks. (Bacteria can be pushed into the womb on fitting)

Do not believe drs when they say it causes no symptoms. It caused me depression, weight gain, bloating, spots, mood swings, v painful cramping when period due (which I still suffer from now, even when period is not due & I am due to have a scan to see what is going on down there) nausea.....and lots of other symptoms.

Please think very carefully about it, it isn't as great as drs make out & once in, drs are v reluctant to remove (mine wouldn't, I had to pay a sexual health clinic to have it removed).

differentnameforthis · 11/01/2010 00:50

Oh & I have been advised never to have another IUD.

expatinscotland · 11/01/2010 00:53

mood swings from HELL made my PND 100x worse and that is saying much, never stopped bleeding, NO sex drive, acne/spots.

i'd rather play brood mare to that nasty David Tenant and bear him children from now till menopause or the world ends, which is again probably saying much for me, than have another blasted Mirena.

don't believe the hard sell.

if you reacted badly to the depo/injection give mirena a swerve.

lucybrad · 12/01/2010 10:13

mine was fab - no periods!!!! at all. No side effects, no PMT. Its out now and im spotty with PMT grrr

twowellies · 12/01/2010 11:15

Just had mine removed. Seemed like the perfect contraception but... it gave me terrible acne, I gained weight and felt quite hormonal. Have since spoken to 2 dr friends who both have a coil but the old fashioned IUD not the mirena. maybe it's worth considering one of those?

Jinx44 · 12/01/2010 12:40

I have had mine in for 2 1/2 years and have had no problems. No periods for the whole time. It was a bit uncomfortable having it put in but no worse that period pains. I am thinking about having mine removed now though as me and BF are thinking about TTC.

stillfrazzled · 12/01/2010 20:21

I've had three, and will have another once we (hopefully) have had our second DC.

First two were fantastic - no side effects bar a little cramping and spotting. Third went walkabout and had to be removed by a consultant, but that was no big deal.

I highly recommend them.

HopingGotASnowyDayInTheEnd · 14/01/2010 00:46

Hello,

I had mine for 5 years and it was the best thing I ever did.

Having it fitted was quite uncomfortable (about a 4/10 on the pain scale) and bled intermittently for about 3 weeks afterwards.

Since then, no periods at all, no mood swings, no weight gain, nada...

I had it removed as DH and I are now TTC and even the removal was straightforward. I have been monitoring my cycle with a Clearblue Fertility Monitor since having it removed and had a 'normal' cycle immediately.

The only thing I could find to complain about (if I look really hard for something) is that I had terrible PMT this cycle, as I have got so used to not having any hormonal mood swings at all - DH was quite taken aback by my tearfulness and general unreasonableness in the few days before AF arrived.

I guess this is normal, but kind of took us both a bit by surprise as I had the Mirena when we first met so he had never seen me hormonal before - I have advised him to dig out his hard hat once I fall pg!

Overall though, I can't recommend it (Mirena) highly enough! I will certainly be having another one fitted after having a DC (fingers crossed!)

liath · 14/01/2010 01:07

I have one, I've had one or two issues with it but on the whole it's fine. Some poeple do react quite badly to the progesterone in it but I've been fine despite having struggled with certain pills in the past. It is really convenient and my periods now are very light and last 2 days but I have noticed I put on weight more easily.

morgans73 · 14/01/2010 20:13

Hi! I had the Mirena coil fitted last August. Had problems before with pill, weight gain, mood swings etc and also periods were starting to get heavier, so thought why not.
I have to say that it is by far the best thing I done!! The fitting for me personally was completely painless, perhaps a bit uncomfortable, but I wouldn't say it was anymore uncomfortable than a smear test to be honest. Cramped for a couple of days afterwards. Spotting did occur for first 2 - 3 weeks after fitting. Periods are now extremely light!! I require to use nothing more than a panty liner, and thats only for a couple of days. I gained no more than about 4Ilbs in weight. I have no period pains, and even noticed a different in my PMT!!
It's not everyone's cup of tea, all I can recommend is you try it and see how you get on, but, I would recommend that you leave it in place for a minimum of 6 months to give spotting etc a chance to settle down.

Good luck whatever you decide to do
