Afternoon...

In the summer, i came off the pill. It took a while for my first AF to arrive but then next 2 were like clockwork. I am now 6 days late but my test came back neg.
My partner are doing the whole withdrawal thing at the moment, so surely i cannot be preg?
If i was, it wouldn't be a bad thing so i'm not worried but i just am a little confused as to what is going on.

Any ideas lovely people? x

It takes some people longer to get a positive. The only thing you can do is wait and test again in a few days. Sorry, know that's not a very helpful response!

And you can definitely get pregnant using the withdrawal method. Sperm is released in pre-cum so there's no such thing as pulling out in time.

PinkiePoo · 29/12/2009 12:51

Thanks Muser.

I will leave for a few more days and still no sign, then i will re-test.

Go and buy a clearblue digital test. It can detect the HGC levels quicker than any other test.
I did it on holiday 3 days before i was due and gave me the positive we were hoping for.

It also tells you how far gone you are, expensive at £9 i think it was, but worth it.

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 13:00

As for the withdrawal thing, not a sure thing as small amount of sperm can be released prior to ejaculation.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 13:09

I wouldn't bother with a clearblue unless you fancy spending a lot of money to wee on a stick. It's no more accurate or early than many other tests that detect the same hcg level. I have only ever used ebay cheapy tests (£2 for 10) and tested positive 6 days and 4 days respectively before period was due.

Either you are pg and it's not showing up yet, or you're not pg and you ovulated later in your cycle, thereby delaying your period slightly. It is also possible that this cycle was anovulatory (you didn't ovulate), which is normal every now and then and can delay your period a little bit. Were you poorly or stressed when you normally ovulate this month as this can delay things?

Withdrawal is not a reliable method of contraception At All.

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 13:23

LastOfTheMulledWine - so are clearblue lying on their advertisements then seeing as you know best?!

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 13:29

Which bit of their advertising Lou? Can you quote the bit where they say they can detect a pregnancy earlier than all other tests?

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 13:39

I dont have a tv with their advert on at the moment whilst at work. However their advert is the reason i bought their test as it says their digital one picks up levels quicker. Surely if that was the case with all other tests then they would be claiming the same thing rather than allowing clearblue digital to try and monopolise the market with that claim.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 13:51

You can look at their website for all of their advertising, facts, figures and assertions. They do not claim to pick up results earlier than any other test.

All other tests are very open about their capabilities and say exactly the same thing about early detection.

For the record:

"In clinical testing with early pregnancy samples Clearblue DIGITAL Pregnancy Test with Conception Indicator gave the following results: 55% of women received a ?Pregnant? result 4 days early, 86% of women 3 days early, 97% of women two days early and 98% of women 1 day early" so yes it can work early but so can many, many others.

If you google 'hpt sensitivity charts' there are many, many sites with a breakdown of the hcg detection levels of tests. Many have exactly the same accuracy as the clearblue including supermarket own brands, first response, ebay cheapys, a couple are even more sensitive.

Clearblue are the market leaders and that's why you see more of their adverts than anybody else's.

Their key claim over other brands is that they use words, not lines so are easier to interpret, but certainly not better, faster, earlier etc.

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 13:54

Well i never, shows how much time you have to have on your hands to read into these adverts.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 13:56

Or how many miscarriages you have to suffer in the goal to have a baby. I read nothing into adverts at all, I do know which tests I had to pee on without spending fortune to find out if I was desperately trying to hang onto a baby.

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 13:57

PS. I only know all of that about clearblue as I googled when you asked me to show you that the claim was wrong.

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 13:59

and there i was thinking you were a fountain of knowledge with one of those photographic memories or something

LastOfTheMulledWine · 29/12/2009 14:04

Well now that you mention it...

Actually, I can memorise the layout of the bakery section of Sainsbo's and woe betide you if you move the fondant fancies.

Actually, clearblue are a bit naughty. I found their advert whilst googling and it does say something about 'when you think you might be pg, you need the clearest most accuate answer possible' or something. It then talks about its pregnancy test. It does not link the two statements. Norty norty advertising execs. The lengths they'll go to to get you to pee on their products...

LouLouH · 29/12/2009 14:10

lol so true! And i still bought two to be sure. Didn't quiet believe the first one as was so hoping to be pg.

I hate when they move things in the shops!

PinkiePoo · 31/12/2009 08:47

Still no sign.....but i don't have any other symptoms in the sligtest, so i am guessing I am just late in ovulating.

I agree, after xmas i can't even afford to buy another test yet, so will just have to wait :-)

To be fair, I think Clearblue Digital is clearer than the cross/line ones as I got 2 very faint positives before I used the digital and I was worried I was seeing the cross because I wanted to.

Somehow seeing it in writing makes you believe it more.
