How do I get pregnant with irregular periods?

For the past 18 months my periods have been all over the place and there really is no say when I will get them. Pros have put it down to stress related.

Is there any tried and tested way to get pregnant or is it just sex twice a day forever??

FWIW, I have never in my life had regular periods (from 14 til now 36 unless on the pill) anywhere between 21 days and 98 at the last count. I fell pregnant with both of my 2 children whilst using contraceptive, so I wouldn't initia;;y dismiss the chances.

May I ask what pros?. I ask this as some GPs are pretty much ignorant when it comes to the actual nature of such problems.

Usually consistently irregular periods are caused by hormonal imbalances; in this regard a condition called polycystic ovaries is a common culprit. Another possible cause is a thyroid imbalance. Both should be tested for through blood tests.

If periods are irregular as well blood tests can be done according to calendar days i.e the 3rd (this will test your levels of LH and FSH) and 21st (this will measure progesterone) of the month. You certainly don't have to wait for the next period to arrive.

If your periods have been irregular for the last 18 or so months then stress is very unlikely to be the actual cause.

Certainly not sex twice a day either, this can put undue pressure on both of you. Timed intercourse methods can do more harm than good within a relationship. It is better to make love when you both feel like it.

Do not be fobbed off and seek medical advice asap. If your GP is or has been unhelpful in the past then change GP practice.

I would seek medical advice asap and ask for a referral to a gynaecologist. Both of you should be tested further.

You will need to be persistant in order to get answers.

Hi Vanilla, totally agree with Atilla that you should get the blood tests done. I had the same problem (and still do) but they found nothing with my tests.

I bought a little kit from boots with a thermometer and diary in so I could take my temperature every morning. The theory is, you can know when you're ovulating as your temperature increases.

I'd recommend the book 'taking charge of your fertility' by toni weschler it explains things a lot betterr than I just did! My 2yr old is sat next to me now sining bob the builder so it does work!

Good luck x

Mine have always been this way. Very frustrating. I had tests but they showed that my hormones were in balance, GP said it was stress which I didn't really accept as they have always been irregular anything between 25 and 50 days.

I got pregnant first time very quickly but I had just come off the pill so my cycle hadn't had time to go awry. This time it took a year and I was getting very down as the tests showed that I wasn't ovulating but an egg obviously managed to slip through one month as I am now 5 months pregnant.
