Do you get a pain when you ovulate?

Hi, I have never really been aware of when I ovulate before, but in the last few months I have started to notice a pelvic pain, kind of under my belly (on the right-hand side?) around the time when ovulation should be occuring. I have noticed that people have referred to ovulation pain on other threads - is this normal, then?

I don't have periods anymore, thanks to Mr Mirena - Hoorah. But when I did, I could hear when I was ovulating rather than feel it. It sort of gurgled and rumbled, abit like when you are hungry but from a different area.

I get something much different. Its not very painful, more uncomfortable and feels like something has come loose and is moving. It occurs when I am walking, whatever side I am ovulating on, I feel it when I put that foot forward. Weird isn't it?

Meid · 03/06/2003 13:45

I ended up in casualty once with ovulation pain. I wasn't being dramatic - it was so painful I was passing out and throwing up. It was explained to me that every month the egg starts off as a cyst. Sometimes that cyst can be larger than usual and as it is moving down the fallopian tube it can be painful.
Most months, though it feels like a period cramp or a slight stabbing pain.

prufrock · 03/06/2003 14:43

How timely - I was doubled up in pain for about 30 minutes yesterday, and just got it again on my way back from the canteen - and I sit at my desk, log on to Mumsnet and here's the explanation! Mine is exactly like Allibubbles (now I mean like her pain, not like her, so will one of you grammatical pedants tell me where the apostrophe should be?)

Alibubbles - hope everything is OK. Fibroids don't have to mean hysterectomy nowdays, they can do lots with lasers.

I only get (got) ovulation pain every other month - does that mean it's only one of my ovaries that causes it?

Enid · 03/06/2003 14:58

'my pain is just like alibubbles' pain' - I think

alibubbles · 03/06/2003 16:44

Thanks prufrock, I think that as I am approaching 46 ( yep, I'm probably one of the oldest mumsnetters, but as I always have littles around, I feel a lot younger and can identify with you 'newer, younger mums' that they will just wait for them to shrink. I did have hormone blood tests done as well, so we will see.

Mind you, I'd like the idea of no more periods, flooding every 30mins for the 1st 2 days isn't fun, I'd be happy to lose my womb, it is slightly prolapsed as well, but keep my ovaries.

Thought I had bad appendix the first time I had it. Happened when I came off the pill to try for child No2. Took a couple of months to work out what it was but at least I knew when to try for DS even though I didn't feel 'in the mood' because of the pain.

I started to get an ovulaton pain a couple of years ago when I was 42/43. Can be very intense for half an hour - feel my stomach is being tied in knots. I never have period pains so when this
started it came as quite a shock. The doector says it's probably nothing to worrry about unless the pain gets worse month by month, which it hasn't. So I take painkillers and wait it out.

willow2 · 04/06/2003 14:25

I used to get this too - every other month on right side. Felt as though something was pulling - especially when walking. Every time I put my foot down I could feel this intense pressure in abdomen and back. Sometimes it was really intense, other months less so. Have to say that it is worth investigating as I eventually discovered ovary had adhered to my pelvic wall. Had laser surgery and was ok for about two years and then noticed symptoms again. Sure enough, even though nothing showed up on ultrasound, same thing had happened again. This time surgeon whacked in a bit of teflon to try to stop things sticking again! Things have been fine for several years... until a few months ago. Am keeping an eye on symptoms but think I may well have to get it checked out. Problem is adhesions don't tend to show up on scans, so only way of finding out is for them to stick a camera in my tummy button!

meanmum · 04/06/2003 22:38

Probably not the right place to post this but just wanted to let you know that I don't need to take up the advice of practicing every second night this month as I did another pregnancy test at lunch time and it was positive. Did another tonight just to double check.

Therefore, yipppeeeeeeeeeee, I'm pregnant with number 2.

gingernut · 04/06/2003 22:47

Congratulations, meanmum!!

meanmum · 04/06/2003 22:48

Thanks Gingernut. I'm bursting with happiness at the moment but trying to pretend to be cool about it.

dino55 · 04/06/2003 22:49

tigermoth · 05/06/2003 07:43

WideWebWitch · 05/06/2003 08:14

congratulations meanmum!

hewlettsdaughter · 16/06/2003 20:03

Am I right in thinking that you ovulate about 14 days before your period? If so, then the pain I was getting at when I started this thread definitely was ovulation pain (period has started today!)

OP posts:
Lollypop · 16/06/2003 22:27

Think it does not matter how long your 'cycle' is ovulation is about 14 days before your period.

motherinferior · 17/06/2003 08:13

I've always got ovulation pain, which led to me smugly saying that I had a very good control of my own fertility and could manage without other contraception if I really wanted to. Then I tried. DD is now over 2.

Ghosty · 17/06/2003 08:23

Motherinferior ... he he he ...

hewlettsdaughter · 19/06/2003 12:48

Thanks, Lollypop, good to get reassurance. Motherinferior (and congrats on your driving test!)

I have been really worrying for the last few months as I have been experiencing stabbing pains (usually on the right side, but also sometimes left) of my lower belly. It isn't excruciating, just like a stitch or a quick stab then it's gone. I have been on various websites and looked into all sorts of things that it could be and I was so relieved to read these comments and I can't thank you enough. It does appear now that they are commonly experienced pains when ovulating. I will still make an appointment with my GP just in case, but I was so worried that it would affect my fertility (I'm 28) because although we aren't planning a baby yet, we hope to in the next couple of years. Thank you all so much for posting your comments, I am forever in your debt!!

bluecow · 23/07/2003 20:44

Like Trace74, I sometimes have a sharp stabbing pain when I ovulate. But today I have had what feels like a period pain for hours. Oddly though I don't get pain during my periods!
