Help - 14 days from ovulation to period?

I am sure I am being really thick here, but have got confused over the best time to conceive. Info on Mumsnet says - "Ovulation, when the egg is released from an ovary, is triggered by luteinising hormone (LH) around 10 to 16 days before the start of your next period (the amount of time from the first day of your period to ovulation varies between different women)" - so does the time between period to ovulation vary or the time between ovulation to period?

Urgent replies, if poss. please, as I'm at the end of my period today!

Thank you!

Yes, both. Varies from woman to woman but the luteal phase (ovulation to period) is usually fixed (at least to within a couple of days, if not exactly) in each cycle. So you could ovulate very late compared to normal but your luteal phase would be the same length as usual but your period would be delayed by the delayed ovulation iyswim.

Liking the urgency btw. Are you undressing as you type, just in case to save time?

Mummy369 · 15/10/2009 19:55

Not quite! But hubby fell about laughing!!

Quick, if he's fallen over, that'll save you a few minutes too.

Good luck btw. Assume you're trying to have a baby as opposed to trying not to.

You do know that the best way to track ovulation is to look at cervical mucous? You know, just in case you need to get dh to stop laughing and concentrate on the job in hand, you might want to whisper that in his ear. Strangely, my dh was never interested in cervical fluids.

Oh god - you lost me at 'ovulate very late compared to normal'

Ok, here it is. Usually have a 30 day cycle, so August hits me on day 26 (I blamed it on the heat, middle of our holiday). So I think to myself, "September will be longer than usual, prob. 32-33 days", - September hits day 25! Aarghh! So again, I think - "ok, 3rd time lucky" - October 27 days! Marginally better and almost back to normal. But now I don't know when I'm likely to ovulate!

Not had this problem before - DS1 (almost) a honeymoon baby, DS2 1st month TTC (dirty weekend), DD 1st month TTC and thanks to Hazel Chesterman-Phillips and her book! I know I'm really lucky and my heart goes out to everyone who has been TTC for DC1 or 2 for a long time..

Not all women have a 14 day luteal phase (from ovulation to next period). It can be anything from 12 to 16 days and it's not uncommon for it to be less than 12 days, eg 11 or 10 days.

A luteal phase less than 9 days can cause difficulties in conceiving, though.

Regular sex (2-3 times per week) is the best method, though!!

Mummy369 · 15/10/2009 20:07

Actually, my DH rather likes my cervical fluids - don't know if he could tell you the difference though!

Typically, a womans own luteal phase does not vary very much, only by one day more or less.

Mummy369 · 15/10/2009 20:10

So, if my periods have been a bit erratic recently, it's likely to be the follicular phase?

Yes, assuming that you are ovulating each month.

Have you noticed fertile cervical mucus (looks like raw egg white) around the middle of your cycle? This preceeds ovulation.

Mummy369 · 15/10/2009 20:36

I have an abundance of mucus usually, but after August period had very dry, burning fiery [couldn't sit comfortably for 10 days emoticon] which led me to the practice nurse - took hormone levels but only LH (5) and FSH (7) on what should have been ovulation day but now not sure if it was as had 25 day cycle Aug-Sept.

I get all the right changes to cervical fluids, incl. the raw egg white!

Firey fanjo?? Not something you'd want again by the sounds of it!!!

I try and just go by my CM, and when I see the egg-white stuff we try and have more sex over the next few days.
