I only weigh 7 3/4 stone but I do eat heaps and heapsI just dont know what to do please help

Could you be anaemic? Blood tests will show any nutrients you are lacking and should then help. Good luck and don't worry.

bean77 · 10/06/2005 19:53

Im hopefull about that although I do take a multi vitamin and iron tablet every day as well as evening primrose wild yam etc which people told me would help! The drs also took thyroid function tests I get the results on 23/06 which is also my birthday!!

The first time I came off the pill, my periods didn't come back for 13 months. At the time my GP said it wasn't all that unusual, and that if I had wanted to ttc, he could give me a drug to stimulate ovulation. Presumably you will be able to be treated if the blood tests come back clear.

bean77 · 10/06/2005 19:59

Thanks for that,at least I know im not alone in this! when your periods restarted did they just start or did you need medical help?

In the end they just started; when I asked the GP I was advised to leave it until I hadn't had one for a year, I didn't bother going back to the GP because we weren't ttc, and they came back shortly after the year was up anyway.

You're still young and have plenty of time for children, but if you haven't had an appointment (or a period) in the next couple of months, I'd go back and have another word with the GP.

hellomama · 10/06/2005 20:47

Depends what type of the pill you were on. Can you remember the name of the pill you took? Its often normal not to have a period for a few months after finishing the pill, but you've done the right thing about going to your GP as its been so long. Don't presume that you are infertile though, because ovulation could happen at any time so you should use condoms or other contraception if you're not planning to get pregnant at the moment. How tall are you? You do sound a bit underweight which may be a reason why the periods haven't returned. Have you ever had a thyroid check, did the doctor do this during the blood tests? If you have an underactive thyroid this may be another reason why the periods haven't returned and why you find it so difficult to put weight on.

hiya thanks for everyones help, the name of my pill was loestrin 20, which I think was menat to be a low strength pill!! Im 5 foot 3 ish so I know that Im slighlty underweight but I have been this weight since I was about 18, My sister is also quite small but her peroids are fine, and my family are naturaly small anyway, but the doctor did test for thyroid so maybe it is just that? Im still using condoms although hubby moans as cant realy see the point! I has a bit of a heart heart to heart last night and he now saya that if the doctors recommended we crack on with trying straight away then we willdo, although he originaly wanted to wait a year till a year and a half, just want to thank everyone for all the advice and help you have given me it has realy helped me knowing that other people have gone through this thankyou all so much!

Gill,

Thyroid problems may cause this but your lack of periods may well also be linked to another hormonal imbalance. In this regard polycystic ovaries is a common culprit. Its a very common condition; one in five women have ovaries that are polycystic. I'm no expert but they should check to see if you have polycystic ovaries.

If your thyroid tests come back as clear then they should look closely into the possibility of the hormonal imbalance mentioned above. This can be done by means of a blood test where your LH (luteinising hormone) and FSH (follicle stimulating hormone) levels are measured. An imbalance of these two (especially if the level of LH is higher than FSH) is indicative of there being a hormonal problem.

Your LH and FSH levels need to be compared against one another; it is imperative that this is done rather than the two levels just looked at separately.

I think you were unfortunately fobbed off when you were 16; I think you were given rubbish treatment to be honest with you.

If PCO is confirmed it is not an absolute barrier to conception but you may need some medical assistance from the subfertility dept at the hospital to conceive.

There is no real evidence to suggest that the pill is responsible for failure to ovulate when you finish taking the tablets so do not think the pill has done this. It can though mask symptoms of any underlying problems.

HYPOTHYROIDISM (Underactive thyroid)

The most common cause of hypothyroidism is Hashimoto's thyroiditis. In this condition, the body's immune system mistakenly attacks the thyroid gland.

Common symptoms of hypothyroidism are:

  • Fatigue or lack of energy
  • Weight gain
  • Feeling cold
  • Dry skin and hair
  • Heavy menstrual periods
  • Constipation
  • Slowed thinking

HYPERTHYROIDISM (Overactive Thyroid)

Common symptoms of hyperthyroidism are:

  • Jitteriness, shaking, increased nervousness, irritability
  • Rapid heart beat or palpitations
  • Feeling hot
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue, feeling exhausted
  • More frequent bowel movements
  • Shorter or lighter menstrual periods

Ive never had periods, yet i have 2 healthy children!

i was told by the doctor that i'd need help concieving as it didnt seem that i ovulated, but they found i was pregnant at my hospital appointment.

It took 18 months to concieve ds1 and 14 months to concieve ds2. I recently got pregnant again but miscarried and that took 14 months again.

the doctors have now decided i have polycisitic ovaries (not the syndome) and my eggs get stuck on the ovary or something like that.

just wanted to let you know that you can get pregnant even with out periods. good luck.

exactly the same happened to my friend and shes now 18 weeks pregnant with no period since stopping pill 8 months ago!

Loz06 · 06/08/2010 14:50

Hi everyone

I was on the pill for 15 years and came off and didn't have a period. It was only 3 months but I was charting my temperature and wasn't seeing any surges to indicate that I was ovulating. I went to the doctor expecting to be just told to give it time but he sent me for blood tests which highlighted that I had an overactive thyroid.

I have since been to see an endocrinologist who has prescribed carbimazole. Only been on it a few days and am praying that I don't gain weight (one of the side effects of taking the drug).

One thing the endo did mention was that my daily workouts may be too much for my body and said that my lack of menstrual cycle could be due to a condition called hypothalamic amenhorrea (which you can google). So I've been banned from going to the gym for a month to see if that along with taking carbimazole starts to regulate my cycle. I am also on a course of acupuncture to see if that helps as well.... fingers crossed

hi
I am new to Mumsnet but have a similar problem which is making me anxious. I came off Microgynon 4 months ago after about 15 years on it (now 33) and have had no hint of a period. my boyfriend has agreed to start TTC but i cannot even chart when i am most fertile! I have been to a GP and all the blood tests are normal. I have also been ref for a scan but told it could take 3 months on the NHS. what I cannot get my head round is - how can you test whether you are ovulating or not? i kinda assumed without a period that i must not be, but reading the posts it seems i could be!
i am thinking of going to see Emma Cannon who is an accupuncture and fertility expert. has anyone ever been to see her?
thanks

Loz06 · 10/08/2010 10:55

Hi Emmerson

My situation is similar to yours. I have been taking my temperature since I came off the pill but like you say you can't really chart properly. Thought best to keep it up anyway so that if waiting another 3 months then I can go to my doctor. I also make a note of any changes in cervical mucus that I notice which can indicate ovulation, however I am as yet to really notice much difference there..

I am seeing Emma Cannon at the moment. Have had 4 appointments so far. And after my appointment last week I noticed a tiny bit of spotting. Nothing significant but it was something.

Have you got Emma Cannon's book? The Baby Making Bible? Its quite informative altho you'll get stuck when it gets to what you should do during each day of your cycle as like me you've no idea what your cycle is. But it is quite useful to read through it to establish your 'fertility type' to see whether you can make some adjustments in your diet and lifestyle to help things.

Although I have an overactive thyroid my Endocrinologist isn't sure that whether the fact that I have no menses is due to the hyperthyroidism or due to the fact that I have been exercising quite a lot. Could this be something that is affecting you? Low body weight and a lot of exercise can result in hypothalmic amenhorrea. Just a thought anyway...

And I know you've probably heard already that 4 months isn't all that long.. god knows I've heard it as well. But when you're the one waiting for things to happen it feels like an eternity. I was on the contraceptive pill for 15 years and am just hoping that its a case of time really and trying not to stress about things.

Let me know how things go. I'd recommend going to see Emma Cannon. I think shes back from holiday this week or next. Best to see her for the initial consultation and then you can book the accupucture treatments with some of the other girls there.

Good luck and let me know how you get on
