I had a kidney infection a few weeks ago and was given antibiotics. My period is now a week late (very unusual) and did a pregnancy test yesterday that was negative. I phoned my local pharmacist to see whether it was recommended to avoid these antibiotics while conceiving and her response was a definite yes. There was one 'incident' that with hindsight could have resulted in a possible pregnancy.
I had a missed miscarriage 2 months ago that was very traumatic. We had decided to try again in a couple of months time. I can't believe I've got myself in this position.
Anyone had a similar experience or got any advice?
Help.

Sorry to hear you're so worried, Elvis. No similar experience, but wonder if you may be late due to illness and stress. Now you've had a negative test, you're body might 'relax' and you're period will come. If not, why not test again in a couple of days and take it from there. HTH.

I took mefenamic acid (Ponstab, totally contraindicated, implicated in kidney abnormalities, and funny enough, DS does have slightly odd (but harmlessly odd) kidneys...) for periods pains that never materialised into a period, but instead into unplanned Baby No. 1. And got a dental x-ray that month... and got pissed once or twice. Sheesh, I've done it all

Elvis, talk to the GP who prescribed the antibiotics as soon as you can. I think anyone in your distressing situation merits a bit of TLC and maybe a blood test to rule out pregnancy on this occasion.
Agree with Chanel that it could be your body is still sorting out its cycles after your pregnancy loss and the kidney infection will not have helped you in that respect either.
Sounds like you have had a rough time recently and hope very much that you have the chance to conceive very soon in less stressful circumstances. Please don't be hard on yourself! Cyberhugs.

Elvis, did you take a sulfisoxazole/trimethoprim combination? It's a class C drug, ie has a small risk in controlled animal studies. While it shouldn't be prescribed willy nilly when someone is pregnant, for a serious condition (which a kidney infection is.. just got that lecture from my doctor two weeks ago), the very very small risk is worth it. If your kidney infection hadn't been treated, you and your baby would have been in danger.

Sometimes women need to take drugs that have a risk attached. I was exposed to bacterial meningitis from someone who had stayed with us for a few days when I was pregnant. My doctor and I decided that the risk from the prophylactic antibiotic was much less than the risk from the infection, so I took the drug. Your health is very important to the baby's health. And kidney infections can get very nasty very quickly (hence the lecture from my doctor who thought I wasn't proactive enough in coming in... I came the day after symptoms appeared).

Thanks for your messages which are very reassuring. It has been a really crap year so far. Just when I was hoping for a turn around in fortune......
When I was pregnant with the baby I miscarried I did a couple of negative tests, so I'm worried that a)I'll miscarry again if I am pregnant anyway or b)the antibiotics I took have damaged the baby.
I think a trip to the doctors is called for next week! Or then maybe my period will arrive before then, although is it my imagination or are my boobs feeling a bit sore today?

hi elvis - I'm sure your GP will offer the best advice, but just wanted to let you know I had a similar situation when i took pills in the first few unknown weeks of pregnancy - in that case my doc told me that it was 'all or nothing'as the egg is v resistant to many drugs in the v v early stages and if it was affected at all the egg would not really implant or grow but that if it made it to implantation then it would have suffered no ill effects.
HTH

You could always ask a Pharmacist, they are the experts on drugs and medication and GP appointments are notoriously difficult to get (in my neck of the woods anyway). Best of luck, I hope the outcome is what you wanted
