how long after baby dancing does it take to actually conceive? not for it to show on a test, just from "doing the deed" to a "bubba been made"

24-72 hours, roughly. Depends when you are due to ovulate. If you have a regular cycle, ovulation takes place around 14 days following the first day of your last period - check out the ovulation calendar on this website. Androsperm ('male') last up to 24 hours following intercourse, and Gynesperm (female) last about 72 hours. Conception takes place when the sperm has entered the egg, but it takes about another 7 days for implantation to occur (when the fertilised egg burrows in to the wall of the womb).

ok so here's my maths. 22 day cycle. last period was 23rd december, baby danced 29, 30 and 31t december. i get my due date to be 2moro but my midwife is stubbornly sure due date is 28th sept. what do you think? reason i ask is that if i go over 2 weeks by HER dates i will actually be 3 weeks over.

Ok. Midwife dates are accurate within a 7-day margin for error, and will always be based on a 28-day cycle. What does your dating scan say?

well on my 20 week scan i was 20 weeks to the date by midwife but scan said 20 weeks 6 days but because it wasnt a big difference they wouldnt change dates. up until now, not a problem but now a week makes a difference if you see what i mean.

Unfortunately the 20 week scan is not the most accurate for dating. Do you know what the 12 week scan indicated?

Less than 3% of babies are born on their due date, and many do go over their EDD. You will have a midwife appointment when you reach 40 weeks and 41 weeks, and perhaps an appointment with a consultant to discuss the plan of care should you need to be induced. You will be examined at all of these appointments to check the fundal height of the uterus and to ask you questions such as foetal movements, etc.. If you have any concerns, ring your local maternity unit at any time and speak to a midwife on delivery suite.

thank you so much, 12 week scan was afewdays over too but again not enough to change dates. my midwife did explain they dont usually change the dates unless the difference was 1 -2 weeks or more. which i always knew it wouldnt be more than that. i am seeing midwife on thurs so i may ask for a sweep to see if that gets things going. thanks for your help.

Your midwife may not be able to do a sweep for you this Thursday - as far as I know, they are only allowed to 'sweep' from your due date, but I don't know if this is local or national policy.

The few days difference in dates at the 12 week scan may account for your shorter cycle, but babies still take 40 weeks to reach full maturity. If you were uncertain of your date for last period, they would use the 12 week scan date, but as you were definite about the dates (and they were within the 7 days) they would stick with the midwifes dates as they are based on the date you gave her.

None of this will affect the date your baby is ready to come out. I thought my DS1 was going to be inside me forever - not a single braxton hicks or any other early signs of labour or readiness. Lo and behold, waters broke at 38 weeks! DS2 pregnancy was a nightmare, with plenty of warnings from midwife and consultant to go in at the first sign of anything - had loads of false alarms and ended up with no labour and elective caesarean! DD1 pregnancy worrying, and then I was ill in hospital at 38 weeks. Labour fast and furious - born 1 hour past due date.

you never know when the little ones will arrive do you?? ds1 was 36 weeks, ds2 was 37weeks so i am feeling hard done too getg this far this time. hasnt bothered me as such goito term just scare me abit that i may enup going over what i know in my heart of hearts to be my actual due date plus 12 ish days. fingers crossed i wont get to that stage but wanted to sound it out just incase.suppose i am very nervous too and looking for any sign as ds1 was only 3 1/3 hourslabour and ds2 was 1 1/2 hours but i didnt even think i was in labour, its such a nervous time!!

Bless, you poor thing. Mine were 38 weeks, 39 weeks and 40 weeks - I thought the dates were supposed to get earlier the more babies you had?!? But my 2nd labour was only 3 1/4 hours compared to the first one at 3 days!
