Irregular periods TTC

Hi, Last year was quite a difficult one for one reason or a few others and towards the back end of the year my periods became irregular. I was expecting a period on October 1st and did not get one until December 12th. The next one after that (and consequently my most recent period) was on February 26th, 2009. I am due to see the doctor again (my previous meeting about 3 months ago was to see how I went and to come back after a few months) next week but wondered if there was anyone else out there who has experienced the same as my husband and I have been ttc for about 6 months now and nada.

I am in my early 30s and the pressure is on from family and there seems to be (and this is all in my head) a silent race amongst friends. I am trying to be zen about it all but have a niggling worry about my irregular periods and not being able to conceive.

Hi YnC

Thank you very much for your message. That is very encouraging The doctor mentioned metformin today as a possible option.

I bet you cannot wait until your August baby. I will be 33 in August too!

It is so great to hear such positive stories, it is really encouraging and a real motivator when you are on a bit of a downer.

I think the drug your gp mentioned might be Metformin. This is the one I was given for my PCOS. I did not ovulate at all and had not had a period for a year. Then with Metformin I started having periods every 4-6 weeks and conceived within 6 months. PCOS is caused by insulin resistance which messes up your hormones. Metformin is a diabetes drug that will regulate your insulin levels and that allows your hormones to do their job properly. It certainly worked for me!

Hi KittensMittens
I'm so pleased your doctor is being supportive and things are getting underway. My sister in law was prescribed Metformim, took it for 2 months, thought "Hmm, we'd better start trying properly now, must see what my cycle is..." Then she got worried because she hadn't had a period for 8 weeks. She did a pregnancy test... And discovered she was 8 weeks pregnant! So it definitely worked for her. In my case, I didn't ovulate at all (which is unusual, most women with PCOS do ovulate, just not very regularly, as you can see from the posts), in addition I had polyps in my womb, so went for the surgical option of ovarian drilling (as I had to have an operation anyway). I got pregnant after just 5 months, unfortunately lost that baby, but got pregnant again after just 3 months. So you see there are plenty of options! PCOS is not the worst fertily problem one can have, and it's so good you found out aobut it on time - it was a lot more stressful for us as I was already 35 when we discovered the problem. All the best!!
