wanted; fertility expert recommendations

We're TTC #2; I'm 40 next year, and had various health issues in TTC #1 a couple of years ago.

I wondered if anyone had any good recommendations for a fertility specialist, who could take us from the initial check-up stage, through to any tests/ treatments / IVF, if necessary? We're in Central London.

Zita West's clinic is meant to be good - have read her books and they are very insightful plus she deals with the emotional side of TTC - not just the physical. Not sure she offers IVF though, but I am sure her clinic recommends/works alongside somewhere that does. Otherwise I know people who have used the Lister Hospital.

Paul Serhal at the Assisted Conception Unit at UCH London. The clinic itself has the best results in the country for IVF live births, and personally I now have my gorgeous 3 year old DD as a result of IUI there . Also worth having a look on www.fertilityfriends.co.uk for lots of advice from people going through treatment.

Is there any advice for nhs fertility treatment in west midlands/staffordshire?

inthequeue I had treatment at the Lister and cannot fault them. Zita West also treated me but she offeres complementary therapies such as acupuncture diet etc. She works out of her own clinic but also at the lister as well.

I can recommend Mr Trew, he's rated as one of the top 10 fertility Doctors in the country and I believe he was trained by Prof Robert Winstone

I went to UCH ACU for investigations.
I didn't get to the point of having IVF since I became pg before then but I would not hesitate in going back if I needed to.

Their results are great. I saw Mr Ranieri. Mr Serhal (recommended by Tattycatty) is the clinic director.

UCH ACU will, IME, often recommend IUI as the first course of action. Their approach seems to be to try the least invasive option, although if you said you wanted it I am sure they would help you with IVF. I liked that they were thorough and wanted to get to the bottom of our issues, not just to leap straight to IVF.

Most clinics have open evenings so you can go along and get a feel for what they offer before signing up. Or you could pay for an initial consultation and see how you feel after that.

Thanks Mrs Happy, that's interesting on the IUI-front, as we haven't been trying very long with #2 (6 months), so i am uncertain as to how aggressive to be, weighing up past difficulties and age against unecessary intervention.

I think a decent doctor/clinic should help with that. We had similar thoughts (although for different reasons), and I went there for confirmation of whether I could conceive without IVF and then for help in speeding things along (either via IVF or another route) and they understood that. Clearly there are circumstances where IVF is the only way to go, but I liked that they didn't see it as a quick fix for every problem.

I can also recommend ACU, haven't had any success there yet but they have impressive statistics and are very professional. Have also heard good things about lister. I would just go for an initial consultation and do some of the basic tests immediately, then you'll have a better idea about how quickly to start treatment. I now wish we had started treatment even earlier, but obviously hindsight is a wonderful thing!!
