Did it take anyone longer than six months to conceive after MC?

Getting a bit worried as had a miscarriage at 8 weeks last November and still no BFP. It has taken a while for my cycles to return to normal since MC so maybe this is the reason, but any encouraging stories would be greatly appreciated! I just turned 30 and have always had regular cycles....was off the pill for a year before started ttc and it happenned first month! Would love to hear your stories.....

I empathise as i had a miscarriage the november before last (after a year of trying to conceive). it took exactly 6 months to conceive a second time. now have a lovely wee boy!! what finally worked for us was ovulation sticks that u wee on - i found out i ovulated later in the month than normal.
good luck - it will happen. maybe your body's way of making sure you are fully fit and back to normal.

Thanks so much stinkypants. Sorry to hear of your loss but glad that all turned out well in the end.

Anyone else?

Hey,

I had a mc in May 2006, tried for another 2 years...

I now have a 5 week old son

We had tests and stuff done, in the end I believe it was down to stress that it took us so long.

Good luck to you.

That is wonderful news girlylala! I completely understand what you mean about stress affecting conception. I definitly think I need to relax more but it's so hard not to obsess!! Especially when friends seem to fall pregnant at the drop of a hat....

I had a mc in September 2007 and am still trying, girlylala your story has made me smile, congratulations on your new baby

I mc'd in March 2008 at 11 weeks. Had been off the pill for about 2-3 months and like you, conceived first month trying. After the mc, it took 8 months for a BFP - am currently 30 weeks pregnant. I have no idea why it took so long - I had been temping pretty religiously and using ov sticks, so I knew when I was ovulating pretty well. We had some testing done and all was fine with me (despite my LP being borderline short), but DH's morphology was poor. I got him on some vitamins and expected it to take 3+ months to work (takes more than 70 days for sperm to replenish), but that was our lucky month! We did make an effort to relax about it that month and to have sex more frequently throughout the month instead of trying for a marathon around ov time.

Best of luck!

Thanks Lbot......my husband has also been diagnosed with poor morph and has just started a course of vitamins. Your story has given me hope!

Really sorry about your MC. Initially I got pg within 2 months of coming off pill without really doing anything (wasn't checking ov dates or anything), but then had mmc at 8 weeks. After that, it took 12 months of TTC to get pg again. Saw a few docs - one told me that it can take 3 months or so post-mc for your hormones to go back to normal. Then I think we just got too stressed about the whole TTC thing, which was counterproductive. What did work finally was using clearblue fertility monitor - and getting over the stress somehow. Think it would have been easier/quicker if I hadn't been so intently focused on trying to TTC again immediately after the mc and just let my body recover. Am now 38 weeks pg.

Thanks pinkpeony -- I just bought a clearblue fertility monitor. I feel like it will take the guessing out of when I ovulate....tried temping but could never wake up at the same time every morning, and i could never hold my pee in long enough with ov sticks...(four hours is much too long for my small bladder!).

I'm 36 and had mc end of June 2008, conceived August 2008 getting a BFP at the beginning of Sept. Feeding my 9 day old DS as I type this

There is definitely hope and really hope your BFP comes soon.

No worries, Babyboom - I'm very sorry about your mc. I had my husband on the Marilyn Glenville vitamins and pycongenol that I bought off ebay. But what I really think worked was the more frequent sex - as in 2-3 times a week regardless of when I was ovulating. There is a really good thread on the website fertilityzone.co.uk called Life in the Lab. It's moderated by two sperm experts. I found the following particularly helpful after we had DH's results - I've copied it in below, but the link to Life in the Lab goes directly to the page it's on. Hope it's helpful!

On a shorter term basis sperm quality will vary with ejaculatory frequency in the following manner:

Sperm have to spend some time in the epididymis where they undergo their final maturation and "cleaning-up" as they wait to be ejaculated. However prolonged abstention, say more than 10-14 days, will cause the sperm to deteriorate, reducing their motility and morphology. Plus also sperm antibodies if present, will build up and further impair sperm function. The semen volume will certainly increase during this abstention period but the specimen will be more dilute and most of this will be lost after intercourse, running out as the "after-flow" as it's called. As the sperm performance will also have been reduced then this will be a specimen of much poorer quality than ideal.

Conversely too frequent ejaculation, and this means more than three/four times per week for most men, (unless they have a natural high volume as some men do), will maintain a good sperm count and quality, but the volume of the specimen will start to reduce to a point where it becomes too low to adequately cover the cervix to allow sperm to swim into the cervical mucus where they are happiest. Also as vaginal fluid is generally hostile to sperm there needs to be a reasonable volume to dilute this effect down.

So the ideal frequency for best volume. count, motility. morphology and sperm antibody minimalisation, is every 2-3 days. And this means keeping up this rate even prior to ovulation. There is no point in abstaining from ejaculation until presumed ovulation and then starting to do it, with "old" sperm. If you are unable to make love early in the cycle either because you are regularly not together at that time, or she is unwell, then the man needs to masturbate in the interim so that when you do get together you are immediately working with your best sperm.

From the woman's point of view her pre-ovulatory cervical mucus will usually be suitable for sperm penetration around two days prior to ovulation and stay so for a day after ovulation, and good sperm will last about 2-3 days in this mucus. Thus there is a three-day window within which sperm can enter into and survive within the female genital tract. Making love every 2-3 days around ovulation, ie three times in the week of ovulation will give the best sperm picture and the best chance of this coinciding with ovulation. There is no need and no benefit in struggling to find "the day" and then struggling to "do it" on that day. This is stressful, and stress reduces sperm quality and seminal volume, and impairs ovulation.

Thanks so much for all the info Lastbox!

My husband has been taking pycnogenol, a general multivit and has been being much healthier in general......so fingers crossed it all makes a difference.

I definitely think we need to be bding more throughout the month....it's a little hard as husband travels a tremendous amount for work. I'm in between jobs at the moment so this might mean my having to travel with him a bit. I certainly don't think he will mind!

Thank you again for the info. Will also get DH to read it over.
