PCOS and Ovarian Drilling - Any advice???

Livvigirl · 02/05/2009 15:46

I have been trying to conceive for 2 years, tried clomid at the end of last year, and I did'nt respond, so I am about to have ovarian drilling done, my doctor wants to do the procedure in the first 14 days of my period, I am booked in for the 27th May, and I have just come on my period today! Which means the 27th May will be the 18th day of my period, I am not sure whether to tell them or not - does anyone out there think it will make a difference??

I am worried if I don't get in this time, I will go to the back of the queue and I have been waiting since January!!!

Any advice would be greatfully recieved. x

I had this - I can't remember where I was in my cycle - I only had about 4 or 5 periods a year. I would tell them. If there is a problem there's no point in your going through the trauma of surgery and a general anaesthetic if it's not going to work. Hopefully it won't matter and over the next few months we'll have apost from you saying that you're pregnant.

All the very best.

Dalek - did the drilling work for you?

Can you only get this if you are ttc??? I have PCOS andd the only thing I was offered as a solution was the coil/ I resisted and resisted but now I have it, I have been bleeding since January. Not fun.

Yes it did although don't worry if i takes a few months - I had the ovarian drilling in December and got pregnant the following August. I think that for the first couple of months after the operation we just tried as normal and then after that I took clomid again. My dd will be 9 in a week!

Good luck

bargainhuntingbetty - I'm not sure if you can have this procedure if your not TTC, you could ask your GP?

Dalek - I hope you don't mind me asking, but was your BMI wunder 30? I have read alot about I this, and I am just slightly over the 30, I am trying very hard to bring this down, but it is hard!

Ask away -my BMI was probably over 30 - I have struggled with my weight all my life and the consultant did bring it up. I did try to lose weight but luckily I did fall pregnant. I actually joined SW with a friend and found out I was pregnant by the second meeting.

Livvigirl · 02/05/2009 17:03

Thanks x

Also did you periods drop into a cycle straight away after the drilling?

Mine at the moment are roughly every 6 weeks or so, but I don't think that I am actually ovulating as I have no obvious signs!

Livvigirl, sorry to jump your thread but are you from Livvi????

dalek · 02/05/2009 17:07

No they didn't - they actually only became regular after my DD was born.

My consultant told me that days 10 to 15 were usually the most fertile regardless of the length of your cycle.

To be honest I think that I only ever ovulated after the drilling and when I was taking clomid as well.

Livvigirl · 02/05/2009 17:42

bargainhuntingbetty- sorry what do you mean? :0)

Livvigirl,

Don't think it will make any difference at all tbh but would speak to them anyway.

Ovarian diathermy to give this op its proper name can be successful for some PCOS patients (I became pg two months post surgery) but know of both successes and failures for this operation. Its not a cure by any means, the cystic follicles associated with PCOS do return over time.

Livvigirl · 02/05/2009 18:46

I am worried if I do speak to them, because my periods are 6-7-8 weeks apart I would have to wait sooooo long before I got another appointment, because when I called to get this appointment, thay said that was the earliest they could get me in! I have been waiting since January, I don't know how much more waiting I can take. x

I would have the op on the 27th May if it is okay with the surgical team; my periods at the time I had ovarian diathermy were even further apart than yours currently are.

27th May could be seen as the start date; hopefully from that time post op your cycles will shorten and become ovulatory. As it stands at present these cycles are highly likely to be anovulatory ones.

Do speak to the surgical team and let us know how you get on. It is vitally important too that the three of you can work together and communicate openly.

Good luck with the op!!

I'd let them know, but would also point out the infrequency of your periods. You shouldn't go to the back of the queue, but you may get rescheduled. Unlikely I would think.

Good luck.
