I'm not TTC, so I hope it's ok for me to post on here but I was hoping someone might be an expert on vaginal secretions.

Around mid-cycle each month I seem to produce a lot of mucus. I know this is normal to a degree, but there seems to be a lot more than there used to be. I first noticed this after DC1, and it has returned along with my periods after DC2. There is no discomfort, smell or anything else that would suggest any sort of infection, but is it something I should be worried about? Prior to DC1 there was very little compared to now.

Sorry if this is all tmi! Does anyone know why this might have happened?

You thought that was tmi - wait till you read this!

When I was in my early 40s I started getting a flood of thin watery mucus mid month. And I'm talking about one minute being normal and five minutes later having a big wet patch that had soaked into my jeans - once it was about 6" in diameter. I mentioned it to my GP who gave me a load of crap about 'the quality and quantity of vaginal secretions varying throughout the month' and I got cross becuase I was 45 ffs and I knew all about that and that this wasn't normal! Anyhow... at the same time I was having problems with very heavy periods so I got referred to a consultant gynaecologist and eventually had endometrial ablation. (I've done threads on that if you're interested.) But the point is this... I spoke to the consultant about my ridiculous over-secretion and he explained that it is cervical mucus not vaginal mucus. It is totally different and is supposed to be watery but within it are microscopic 'strands' that act as a guide for sperm on their way to the cervix. It's a little miracle of mother nature to aid conception! In my case I didn't want any more children so he zapped my cervical mucus glands at the same time as he performed the endometrial ablation and hey presto - no more problems. But if you want more children then your cervical mucus is your pal!

Mmm interesting fortyplus. I wouldn't describe mine as a flood exactly, certainly not to the extent of soaking through my clothes. It also sounds thicker - sometimes clear and mucusy and sometimes thicker and more white and jelly-like (sorry, far tmi!). However, I do tend to get quite heavy periods - much heavier than before DCs, with quite a lot of clotting. Perhaps I should mention it to the Doc as planning to have a mirena fitted soon.

Thanks for your help.

Good luck with that. Our bodies can be vile at times, can't they?
