Should I try for a girl or a boy, next? Already have one of each...

I'm so jealous of the preggo's and TTCers because I'm dead broody, but we won't possibly join their ranks for another few months... so I'll obsess about this instead! I know too much about the "tricks" to not be conscious of how to skew the odds towards having a boy or a girl, next time. The existing children would be 4.5yo+ boy, and 2.5yo+ girl.

Is it better to have a boy, because my middle child will be the only girl, or better to have a girl because they're less boisterious & wear cuter clothes? Are girls or boys more expensive in the long run? Though we're quite a sporty family, too. A baby brother boy would be less interested in same toys as his near-age sister and far-age brother. But then, 2 boys room-sharing with a 4.5 yo gap sounds less practical than 2 girls sharing with 2.5y gap. How would you decide?

Oh zebra - can you really decide like that? One can never be 'better' than the other - either will find their own place and fit into your family. Anyway, I don't believe it is possible to skew the odds. Anyone that says that they have was just lucky (or not as the case may be). I am lucky (!!) enough to have four (10(dd), 6(dd), 5(ds) and 7 months (ds) and the mix of boys and girls has been great but it would be silly to say theres been no problems. there has been competition and rows and things but I dont think it would have been any difference if the sex mix had been differnt.

I have heard something about possibly being able to influence what sex you have. How are you meant to do this, I think its something to do with when you have sex because XY chromosomes prefer one environment and XX chromosomes prefer another, is that right?

SoupDragon · 21/04/2003 14:10

Cheeky, supposedly male sperm swim faster but female sperm last longer so if you have sex after ovilation, it's likely to be a boy as the male sperm will get there first but if you have sex before, the male sperm may have got their first but may have died before the egg arrives, leaving female sperm to do the job.

There are theories about acidic v alkaline environments too I think and lots of other things too

Personally, Zebra, if you're not bothered if it's boy or girl, just let it be a surprise FWIW, I'm the youngest of 3 and the only girl and it was great! Obviously you can't go for this arrangement though...

boy

do you really want two teenage girls fkin nighmare IMO

boys earn more money usually despite our struggle as women - and as such can pay you a higher rent when they start work

girls might wear cuter clother - so you really like ironing all those frilly dresses? my girl always wore pants i couldnt be doing with it

frilly dresses ( puke) and they cost more

girls get PMT

boys chill out more

boys love their mummies ..oh yes they do

girls cry and whinge

boys fall down and get up and carry on playing

girls cry and NEEEEEED a plaster

boys get away with stuff cos they are boisterous

girls just get into trouble

girls bring boyfriends home ( see another thread) you dont want that trouble

girls get pregnant

boys get girls pregnant - i know but - its always gonna be her main responsability - societies rules not mine.

vote for boys they love their mummies ( hence all our MIL probs girls..fkin MIL grrrr)

Custy ... my boy cries and NEEEEEEEEDS a plaster! What does that mean?
I used to obsess about having a girl Zebra ... big time. But since my M/C I don't care at all ... I want a baby ... full stop ... no matter what it is!
I still think it would be NICE to have a girl ... to even it up a bit ... to be able to do plaits in her hair ... etc etc and yes the pink stuff ... gorgeous. But does it REALLY matter? As long as you have a healthy baby at the end of it ... surely that is what you really want?
I agree with Custy in that boys do love their mummies BUT now we are grown up my sister and I are closer to our mum than my brothers are. Yes, they love her and adore her but we talk to her a lot more than they do ... especially now we all have our own children.

no-o-o-o Custy

girl for sure..

boys stay at home until they are 30

  • then they leave and never ring you

girls leave home first

  • then they keep you up to date with gossip on the phone

you can go shopping with girls

you have to watch freezing, on the sidelines as boys play football

girls are more independent

boys whinge whinge whinge

girls keep their rooms tidy

boys 'have to be tough'

girls do better at school

..mind you, you can't stand a toddling girl behind a lamppost/car/fence for a little wee wee!

Personally I have got girl (10), boy (6) and girl (1). I wouldn't have it any different. Eldest DD will always be special because she is first born, DS will always be special (middle child syndrome, if it exists, and all that) and DD2 will always be special because she is the baby of the family,

ALTHOUGH, saying that, all children are special in their own special way.

Bumblelion · 22/04/2003 14:36

Meant to say DS will always be special because he is the only boy.

PandaBear · 23/04/2003 17:46

Zebra - why even think about what you would prefer? As far as I know there is no 100% guarantee of gender selection, so surely by deciding what you want you are just setting yourself up for a fall!
Whatever gender a new baby would be, he or she will fit into your family in his or her own way.

Aunaturalmama · 11/10/2019 20:47

I would try for two girls personally since they will be closer in age. :) I wanted two boys close in age for that reason and will try for a girl next.

Aunaturalmama · 11/10/2019 20:47

Erm I should say I am pregnant now and waiting to find out if the gender sway worked lol

Aunaturalmama I have to ask, how the hell did you manage to drag up a thread from SIXTEEN years ago? 😂 whatever child OP had next will be leaving secondary school!
