Oestrogen Levels?

I have just had a blood test to check my oestrogen levels as I haven't had a period since coming off the pill.

Has anyone else had this, and if they were found to be low, what happened next?

Doc was a bit vague and just said I would be "referred".

Not had the results yet, so for all I know they may be normal I just like to get ahead of myself

When did you come off the pill and what are your periods generally like (are they irregular and or painful in nature?).

Two common causes of irregular and or absent periods are polycystic ovaries and problems with the thyroid gland. Both should be checked for thoroughly. I note you have now been referred which is a good thing as such problems are often outside a GPs general remit.

Only december, so the doc did say that I'm still inside the normal timescales, but as I'm nearly 35 said he might as well test the levels and see.

Before pill, periods were always regular and not hugely painful, but I have had a history of a slight hormone imbalance (night sweats etc) so I think that's another reason he's testing now.

He hasn't referred me yet, as I've not got the results, I was more wondering what would happen if he did refer me. I'm assuming if the levels are normal he'll just tell me to sit and wait for a period.

You mention you have a history of hormonal inbalance (night sweats) - has the cause of this ever been established properly?.

I think you should be referred to a specialist asap - clearly the GP does not have a clue here.

Thanks for responding Attila. The night sweats were a few years ago and were found to be raised prolactin levels. The GP at the time (different to current) was at a loss with them as they were not high enough to be really worrying, just raised above normal. She thought it most likely to be a virus (don't they always say that ) or stress, and as they subsided, we never persued it. However some googling (yes, I know vv dangerous activity!) reveals that raised prolactin often means low oestrogen - so I suppose I am expecting the results to come up abnormal for the test.

Current GP was v good, I have to say, I am pleased he is taking me seriously - I was expecting a brush off as I know it can be normal to have to wait a bit for periods to come back.
