Short luteal phase

waitinggirl · 07/03/2009 20:30

hi there - a friend has completely regular periods but they are short - and the luteal phase is around 9-10 days - she is currently undergoing tests. she is convinced the short luteal phase is stopping her conceiving.

has anyone else had a short luteal phase and how was it treated and what were the results?

i would like to get some more information in order to help her. thanks

Hi

I discovered after 1 1/2 years that although I have a lovely regular 29 day cycle I just could not get pregnant. Turns out that I ovulate on day 21, not the usual day 14, which then gave me a very short luteal phase of 7-8 days.

I worked it out by temp monitoring, CM checks and of sticks from Ebay I am now a very proud mother of two.

I must admit the great thing about discovering the late ovulation was that I was quick to find out I was pregnant. No two week waits for me!

I wish your friend the very best.

abroad - did you just change the dates you had sex, or did you get medical treatment - was the 7/8 days enough to conceive your two? my friend knows exactly when she is ovulating from temp monitoring, cm checks etc, but still can't conceive and is undergoing loads of tests at the hospital.

thx

Hi

I had no medical treatment. It was really 1 1/2 years of us Hi,

We spent the 1 1/2 years trying on the wrong dates before we decided something must be up. I had been charting all that time but because I was looking for signs at day14, I didn't think to look beyond that.

I only used two cycles worth of of sticks to put all the info together and realise I have a late ovulation/short luteal phase. We started trying a week later in the cycle than before.

DS1 was conceived two months after I fully understood my cycle. DS2 was about 9-12 months to conceive but we were going through a very stressful time organising the relocation, me finishing work, leaving the uk etc.

I fell pregnant the second time the weekend I left my (awful) job. Was the lack of stress at that point a help? Maybe. DS1 was conceived when DH resigned for a better job.

I'm waffling, but hope some of this helps.

9-10 days is shorter than average yes, but doesn't necessarily mean there's no chance of conception if everything is otherwise well. I have a 10/11 day luteal phase and a good friend's is 8/9. We both have children. She has 4 and fell pg very quickly with all of them.

It can sometimes be an indicator of a larger problem but they will obviously be looking at everything.

Hi,
I second what everyone else says I worked out my luteal phase was 11 days (they say less than 12 can be problematic) so I was convinced that was causing me trouble in concieving. This month though the planets must have been in alignment or something as I got my BFP on my 5th official month of TTC (but 6th months in total but banned from trying one month due to a suspected infected fallopian tube)

You can try progesterone cream to lengthen a luteal phase or 200mg vit b6 daily (I tried vit b6 only worked to make me horribly constipated!) I tried the progesterone cream this month- but it was delivered really late so I actually only started using it on 10dpo (which was also the day I got the faintest of faint positives so I doubt it made that much difference.

thank you all so much for your experiences - really helpful. not sure how to help her - i really do think her stressing about it doesn't help her, but i also know how awful it is to be told to calm down and stop stressing (had 2 miscarriages in 2007 and started to wonder if it was ever going to happen). thank you all

I suspect the stressing thing may be a myth- I was my most mental this month and it worked for me (but also sods law did as it was worst possible month for it to happen!)

katster37 · 08/03/2009 12:09

I also have a short LP ( I think 9 / 10/11 days) and am on month 4 of TTC. Last month I am fairly sure I conceived as LP was 15 days, and was followed by v v heavy and painful AF. Thandeka congrats on your BFP - I was wondering after you having read your other thread - that is fantastic! Why is it the worst possible month for you to get pg though? I am on 5 DPO and hoping for a BFP this month.... Using B6 and progesterone cream, having tried Agnus Castus for 3 months but wasn't sure it was helping. Good luck to everyone!

peanuthead · 08/03/2009 14:26

I've been told that luteal phase of 10 days plus is ok. Anything less than that and it's harder.

Thandeka · 08/03/2009 17:03

Katster37
Worst possible month as due date is slap bang in husbands final patent law exams for him to qualify-he has to qualify so I can be a SAHM for as long as possible- so I may end up birthing with my best mate and no DH (touch wood we get that far!) Also worst possible month as we are going to Thailand for 3 weeks in 3 weeks- terrified what will happen if I miscarry out there. Oh and now means if we get that far will be going to my first ever glastonbury while 5 months pregnant! Oh and my long awaited dream job just came up which I now can't really apply for as it is likely to be a 1 year contract- so unfair to apply! So yeah worst possible month but I don't really care- at least even if it doesn't work out I know I can get pregnant with a "short" luteal phase.
Sorry for hijacking waitinggirl.
x

Thandeka could you pay to have an early scan befor eyou go to thailand, to put your mind at rest? If you are in London, a few places do one from 6 weeks for 100 quid, or go to your EPU before you leave the country? We have a 3 week hol to NYC then CAlifornia booked for end of July and I am hoping to be pg by then - can't stand the thought of a long haul flight with no alcohol though!!
Glasto while 5 months pg could be interesting though!! Although I'm sure you wouldn't be the first. Good luck, I hope to join you soon as a 'short luteal phaser' who manages it!! X

Hi, I'm new to this and have been ttc for just over a year. I suspected short leutal phase as surge on sticks was day 16 with 29 day cycle. Anyway i've been completely obsessed with googling leutal phase defects etc etc was due to start infitility investigations this month. I already have a ds... Concievef first month of trying 3 years ago!
Today I got a positive test, I'm so so happy but really wanted to let other know as I've read so many negative posts on other sites, stating ' you can't get pregnant with short leutal phase'
hope this doesn't sound patronizing.

Hi,

It is very difficult to get pregnant with SLP. You need to re-adjust you period and ovulation time subsequently. Actually, it?s not that difficult as many people portray it is. If you work on your diet, lifestyle, mixed with natural herbs and acupuncture, you will get your body in order in no time Smile.

Cheers
