Hello all, I have recently miscarried at 10 weeks(gutted) and now have to go away for most of the year to a Malaria zone (I wouldn't have been going if I was still pg) and have been given proguanil and chloroquine anti-malarials. I asked if it was ok to TTC, for when I get back as I'll have to continue taking them for 4 weeks upon my return. After much toing and froing between the nurse and the drug company and on the nurse's consultation with the GP, I've been told to hold off TTCing until 6 MONTHS after I get back, so I won't be able to try again until April 10. I am so gutted, I want to cry. I have no choice over going away- its for work and I'm so upset that the life I'd mapped out has not only been unceremoniously trampled upon by my own body, but also further shot down in flames by bloody mosquitos. Typically the malaria season is exactly over the period that I'll be away.

Has anyone experienced this, been to say a malarial zone on holiday and TTC'd upon return? Does anyone know if the length og time you take the tabs is directly proportional to the amount of time you have to 'detox' from it? I know I shoudln't take advise from the internet over that of my GP, I'd just be interested to hear if anyone has been in a similar boat with medications. Many thanks, miserably yours x x x x

I kinda know where you are coming from.
This TTC lark puts so many things up in the air doesnt it.

Personally though i would not want to take any risks and would follow the advice of the GP BUT can you make an appointment with the pharmacist at your local chemist?
They have at their fingertips the top info imho their knowledge is always underplayed. They are experts at this kind of thing and they will be able to advise you about the drugs affect on your body when TTC.

They are also briliant at deciphering the twaddle that goes along with the drug in the packaging,

Good luck.

Not sure on the length of time, I went to Borneo for 3 weeks whilst ttc, my sister in law was also there and ttc, I didn't fall pregnant until a year later but my SIL got pregnant within 3 months of the return. I don't know if that is of any use to you.

I wasn't told not to ttc, and I gather my SIL wasn't either she lived in Australia at the time.

so sorry about your recent mc, hope you get the answers you want soon xx

some Anti malarials are MASSIVELY teratogenic- which means it could cause massive damage to embryo. Seriously DO NOT ignore doctors advice. However perhaps check to see if there is another anti malarial you can take that isnt teratogenic? Unfortunately they are often the ones the bloody mozzies are resistant too.

Booo.

BTW which malaria zone? - sometimes docs are over cautious and prescribe for zones which arent quite zones- eg. I am off to Thailand in 4 weeks and not bothering despite some drs recommending as its not really a zone.
