What anti-histamines and other medicines are safe while TTC?

We are going to Thailand on honeymoon for three weeks and I know mozzies love me and I will get bitten to death so I will probably need to take anti-histamines to control the itch- but I want to know if there are any safer ones to take. I will prob have an anti itch cream too but may need to resort to tablet as I can be an itch nightmare!

I guess I will also need to take painkillers (not ibuprofen as heard that can be bad for ttc) for the hangovers!

I also have a supply of canestan duo (thrush), metronidazole (Bacterial vaginosis) and trimethropin (cystitis antibiotic) which my doctor gives me as it was getting silly the amount of times i was going. I don't tend to take them anymore but I know the securty of having them is great- last thing I want is getting severe cystitis while out there. Hmmm better check about how safe they are while TTC.

Here is the medical info:

Antihistamines: No evidence of teratogenicity (birth defects) in animal studies with high doses of hydroxyzine and loratadine; manufactureers of cetirizine, desloratadine, hydroxyzine, loratadine, mizolastine and terfenadine advise avoid.

Metronidazole: manufacturer recommends avoidance of high dose regimes (also never drink alcohol on this one, can have a very nasty interaction)

Trimethoprim: teratogenic risk (cancels out folic acid).

Drinking a bit less alcohol makes you more likely to conceive, so you might not need the painkillers. But oral rehydration salts (made up into a drink) will probably be quite effective and are safe.

Don't know how much investigation/advice you have had on the recurrent diseases, apologies if you have heard all this before, but here is a quick list of tips:
Visit a STD clinic or your GP and get proper swabs done in case its something nasty.
If you have a family history of diabetes or any symptoms get your fasting blood sugar checked.
Don't ever douche (wash out your vagina) or use vaginal hygiene products
Switch from tampons to a mooncup or towels
Avoid thongs, especially when exercising
Pee straight after sex

Have fun in Thailand!

Hello,
Thanks for all that- very helpful.

Yup all investigations & do all those things (and thongs anyhow are just grim!) for me tis just one of those things and unfortunately the more sex I have (as you do when TTC!) the more prone I am!

What I have been trying recently with suspected vaginal infections is to just leave them to see if they right themselves- which they are tending to do- I supect that anti-fungals and antibiotics are causing a ping pong effect between thrush and BV and key is keeping them in balance! Yay for the flora and fauna of the vagina! (So not going to say vegetation!)

Sounds like a good plan
