Period question - prob TMI

I've been ttc for 6 months now & am concerned about my periods. Previously when not on the pill my periods used to be quite clotty, with thick dark blood (did give a TMI warning) Now the blood is watery & bright red. Assuming the clots are the uterus lining coming away could the change in my periods signify that my womb lining isn't thickening as it should therefore explaining the delay in getting pregnant. Or am I just totally paranoid. Opinions, medical or otherwise, much appreciated.

Sorry I don't know the answer to your question but a blood test will tell you if you are ovulating. Is it worth asking GP for one to put your mind at rest?

I think clotting happens when the blood flow is so fast and heavy that your body runs out of anti-clotting agent for the speed and heaviness of the flow.

It may just be that your body has changed as you have got older and your periods are lighter.

Thanks for your help. I guess it's just going to take time this time round

I recently asked a similar question here as I was worried about the same thing (although not on the pill) and I now think that I get these periods when I've not ovulated that month. Unfortunately, it looks like they're becoming more frequent as I get older.

I temp. to try and keep an eye on when I'm ov'ing, as I'm also down to the one fallopian tube, so my opportunites to ttc are already reduced.

If you're worried it might be worth a trip to the GP.

I had a horrible feeling it might mean I wasn't ovulating. I got pregnant with ds within a week of coming off the pill so wasn't expecting problems this time. Think I will go to drs. Is it likely that I'm not ovulating as I've been pregnant twice before - once straight after coming off the pill & once whilst on the pill.

Even when we're at the peak of our fetility we occasionally have an annovulatory cycle. As far as I know there is no connection between having been pregnant and not ovulating. My periods have changed generally since having ds, but annovulatory cycles gradually become more frequent with age. Having said that, I'm 34 and my mum didn't start the menopause until 48, so I'm not ready to panic yet !

I had blood tests and was told that I 'probably' didn't ovulate but conceived straight away.

Just wondered if you take aspirin or ibuprofen for period pain? Some pain killers will make your blood clot less.

Claire236 · 12/02/2009 11:50

I take ibuprofen but I haven't been getting the really painful periods I used to so tend to only need to take a couple just before I come on then I don't take anything else. I'm only 31 so surely my age isn't a factor yet. I'm not even sure it's worth seeing my GP as it hasn't been a year since we started trying.

Are you ttc? Just watch out as ibuprofen is one of the medications flagged up as not ideal if you are (although the jury is out on whether it does any actual harm to the foetus).

Claire236 · 12/02/2009 18:54

I took loads of ibuprofen when pregnant with ds as I was getting bad stomach pains but didn't know I was pregnant. When I found out I was pregnant I asked my GP about the ibuprofen & she checked & said it wouldn't do any harm to take it in the first trimester. If I'm not ovulating then I'm not going to have a foetus to worry about anyway.
