Good Morning

I am new to Mumsnet, so please bear with me.

I am diabetic, and I am trying to conceive at the moment.

I have heard all the "horror" stories, about, fetal abnormalities, increased risk of miscarriage. etc.,

My consultant was not happy when I told him that I was trying for a baby!!

Any advise would be greatly appreciated, surely there must be other people that have experienced this.

I am absoloutely petrified!

When I had DS2, I was in bed next to a lady with diabetes. She had two children. However, she did seem to have complications and had been in hospital for a long time in the run up. I would also note that both her children had holes in their hearts but I have absolutely no idea if this was related to her condition.

I do know that premature labour, thrombosis and miscarriage are associated. However, I would think that a good consultant could help you discuss these issues and make your choices.

Maybe diabetes uk could put you in touch with mothers who have diabetes.

BTW I had type 2 during my second pregnancy and my DS was fine.

It is nerve racking because they say that the best way to ensure a healthy baby is by very good b/s control which I'm sure you know how hard it is to maintain. I have had type 1 for nearly 26 years and my ds will be 2 soon. He is thank God healthy.

I got to see 2 consultants (one diabetic one obs) for a pre-conception appointment where they went over this with me, advised me on taking folic acid 5mg and clarified exactly what foods could not be eaten of the usual pregnancy myths. If you're on a heavily restricted diet for other health reasons it helps to know whether diet coke is really banned!! They also told me specific things about diabetic pregnancies such as they induce early and possible risks and what they monitor for.

I was told by some medical friends that my chances of conceiving were lower than others but in the end it was quite fast.

Don't worry about it too much and just try and keep your blood sugar well under control. You'll find that once you are pregnant it becomes a lot easier to keep your levels well as you really have a good incentive. At least that was my experience.

If your consultant is not being supportive it may be worth checking out other hospitals if there are any. Some specialise in diabetic pregnancies and may have more resources to help you. Are you in London?

Feel free to CAT or post me if you want any more info.
