Yes, it will stop. It took me a few weeks to get used to it, but it has definitely made a difference to my metabolism for the better. Make sure that you're taking the tablet with a proper meal, not just half a slice of bread or something.

My gp had me stepping up the dose much more slowly. I think I took a low dose for at least a week, possibly two, before going up to the next dose.

Hope this helps......
Take Metformin with, or immediately after a meal.

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember (with food) and continue taking it at the usual time. If it is nearly time for your next dose, leave out the missed dose; never take two doses at the same time to make up. If in doubt speak to your doctor.

Feeling sick, diarrhoea and tummy pain are the most common side effects especially if high doses are given. These symptoms usually improve after a few days.

If you experience an increased depth and rate of breathing causing dizziness, drowsiness and confusion; stop taking this medicine and seek urgent medical advice. You may be suffering from a rare reaction to metformin called lactic acidosis.

Thanks bran I think if it carries on like this I'll stick to the lower dosage for a bit longer before stepping up to the full dose. I can't see what harm it'll do. Got to be better than feeling like this!

Thanks Sawyer, just had beans on toast with today's dose, I am making sure I eat with them. Had a bit of a dizzy spell yesterday morning but put that down to the sick feeling. Glad it passes.

Are you only having one tablet a day at the moment wb? It might be easiest for you to take it with your evening meal if that's usually your biggest meal of the day.

TattyCatty · 03/12/2008 14:26

Made me feel evil for the first few weeks as I was stepping up from 1 to 2 tablets a day - think I did a week of 1 tablet, then a week of 2. I attempted to go up to 3 tablets a day, but couldn't handle the dizziness so Consultant agreed that I could stick to 2 tablets per day. Don't know if this was just me, but even once the side effects had settled down, I couldn't drink alcohol without getting stomach cramps.

Hope it settles down soon for you and good luck TTC!

worrybum · 03/12/2008 15:08

Thanks also TC

Bran, yes just one tablet a day until I go up to 2, taking it at luch time so maybe it would be wise to switch to evening, could then sleep off the nausea.

Any of you had success story with metformin? Have been diagnosed with PCOS after 4 successive miscarriages. I don't seem to have too much of a problem conceiving , just staying pregnant so the theory is that if/when I do ovulate they are poor quality eggs.

yes took about a month for me

TattyCatty · 03/12/2008 15:33

I got pregnant whilst taking Metformin but it was through my second cycle of IUI. I'll never know if the Metformin helped or not, but wanted to give you at least some hope.

Metformin as a treatment for PCOS has come way too late for me (although DH and I had multiple fertility issues so it probably wouldn't have made any difference). Taking it has given me regular periods for the first time in nearly 20 years, which is amazing, so it obviously has a good effect on hormone levels. Hopefully your eggs will be less over-cooked when you do ovulate.
