What do your ov pains feel like?

I'm not the best at reading my body, before I had ds I could have sworn I didn't get ov pains, but I'm much more aware of my body now I've been pregnant (I had no idea where my uterus was until I felt implantation pains! - Ok I knew it wasn't in my elbow, but I didn't realise how low it was)

Anyway, the past two cycles I've had noticeable pain about three fingers to one side of the midline on cd 15. It's like a pinching pain, if I didn't know any better it feels a bit like trapped wind but it's too far down and too far forward. Before ds I had worked out I ov'd on cd15 usually, so now I'm starting to think they're ov pains I've been feeling, but I've heard people describe them as like cramps, but mine are definitely pinching pains, and if I jump up and down it feels slightly more tender, like my ovary is bouncing around and doesn't like it

What are your ov pains like? I'd love to know if what I'm feeling is ov pains, or just trapped wind

Mine are sort of twangy pains. Like someone has grabbed a bit of my insides and yanked it hard for a few seconds. Sometimes they are quite extreme and sudden and I yell out (mostly scaring innocent bystanders in Sainsburys ).

HeadFairy · 27/11/2008 19:51

do they just last a few seconds wmmc? I've had these funny pains all day really, and last month they lasted a whole day too, makes it really hard to pin point ov.

Mine are very painful, one sided, where you would expect your ovaries to be.
I need painkillers for mine.
Pinching yes, but my pains go downwards and make it painful for me to sit sometimes.

Not every month strangely.

deanychip · 27/11/2008 19:52

mine last about 12 hours

HeadFairy · 27/11/2008 19:55

That's reassuring to hear deany, I was worried that they were going on too long to be ov pains. I wouldn't begin to know how far to one side my ovaries would be... does three fingers width from the midline sound about right?

The thing that makes me more convinced they're ov pains I'm feeling is that last month it was the other side.

They just last a few seconds but happen quite a few times. Mind you, I trickle cervical mucous as well which does rather give the game away, so I have this sudden pain, then think I've wet myself

HeadFairy · 27/11/2008 20:04

Cor, that must make conception a doddle wmmc! Or is that me being dim. I've spent the whole day today thinking well if these are ov pains I've been feeling for the past 12 hours then when the hell did I ov? I'm thinking the clock's ticking, only got what, 12 hours... 24 tops...

You'd think but it wasn't till after we conceived DD that this started! DS was a total surprise! I only know now because I've started taking note to avoid any other little surprises popping up.

Good luck btw!

HeadFairy · 27/11/2008 20:22

Oh that's interesting. I could have sworn I didn't ever feel anything like this until I'd had ds. Maybe the hormones do something.

Interesting fact #273.. ov pains are called Mittelschmerz Makes me think of a little bearded German doctor... Professor Mittelschmerz will see you now

oh and thanks for good luck... really want to catch it this month. It would be just my luck to miss this month but get pg next month, which will mean having two babies with almost identical birthdays

Translates as 'middle pains'. Which refers to the middle of the cycle, not the middle of your tummy.

You try going to the GP and complaining of mittelschmerz, I bet they give you gaviscon

HeadFairy · 27/11/2008 21:44

@ Gaviscon! You learn something new every day...

Mine are really low down and almost transverse to my pubic bone and all the way across. Walking is hard, I can't exercise and I have to sit down carefully otherwise I get horrible shooting pains. It generally lasts from 3 hours to 2 days. The last time was yesterday and lasted from 1000-about 1600. Had it checked out at docs as was so painful, and got dismissed for it being 'just hormonal'. I also get dragging pains when I go to the loo which made me think when I had it the first time that I had a UTI, but all that was ruled out.

Am not expert but those symptoms particularly if they are ongoing should be further investigated.

Endometriosis is yet another possible cause for the pain you're experiencing (and is actually the second most common gynae problem seen in women after fibroids). You should be referred to a gynae as a matter of course to be further evaluated.

Many GPs are ignorant when it comes to endometriosis and it is also not readily picked up on any tests like blood, internal ultrasound or urine tests. It is usually only diagnosed through a keyhole surgery op called a laparoscopy.

I would insist to your GP that you are referred. Something is causing all this to arise and to for them dismiss it as "hormonal" is doing you a big disservice.

HeadFairy · 28/11/2008 08:57

hi verified, thanks for that. Have you ever worked out when you actually ovulate if you have pains that last over a day? I still have slight pain in the same place, so i can't work out if I've ov'd yet or not. I have read that as the membranes on the ovary stretch in preparation for ovulation it can cause pain, which to me must mean I haven't ov'd yet. So confusing...

Thank you for your concern. It runs in the family- my mum had it too- there's a really nice doc locum at our surgery who's female, so I'll try her. It has got easier with time since it first started when I came off the pill in Mar 08.

I am slightly worried that it is something more abnormal than 'mere hormonal difficulties', I'm cycle 4 in TTC, but although it's only month 4 and I only get to see my DH weekly, its still concerning me.

Also, my DH's brother has a low sperm count and was positive for being a carrier for a congenital chromosomal defect (they had assisted conception with a sperm donor. Although my DH has come back all clear on his genetics test, I am mildly worried that the sperm count thing may also affect him. I understand that having a low count whilst carrying a genetic defect is often mother nature's way of stopping it being carried through fanilies- am I being silly?

deanychip · 28/11/2008 21:13

verified that is exsactly what my ov pains are like. the shooting pains are awful and like you, if i sit down without care, they make me jump up. (which is painful)

The dragging pains are almost constant, not just there when i go ot the loo. They are always there, heavy and dragging painful discomfort.

Thsi is only since i had my ds.
so teice a month i have pain and misery because my periods are just as painful.

been trying fo a baby for over a year now and although i time bd around these pains nothing has happened other than one awful mc in March. So it doesnt make conception easy, you would think that it would wouldnt you, but i must have something wrong with me.

smartiejake · 28/11/2008 22:27

I never had these till I had had dcs. The first time they happened they seem to last for about 3 days. Now they tend to last about 6 hours. AF starts two weeks later to the minute.

The pains are as you describe and often feel like I am sitting on a spike!
