I have only been trying for baby no 2 for 4 months but have been charting cycle for 5 months and only have luteal phase of 8 days -never any more than that. Think with this my chances of getting pregnant are slim? Now, would you go to GP already and see if there's anything she can do or shall I wait a few months. If I go now, might she just tell me to go away and wait till I've been trying for a year?

My cycle has changed since I had DS by the way so no problems conceiving first time round.

I think you should see the GP. The year thing is a red herring if you have reason to think something is not right.

Yes, I'd go and see the GP. You have evidence that you have a relatively short luteal phase. Are you charting with temperature or sticks though? Sticks will be more accurate in dating your ovulation. Maybe you just have a late temp rise? Are you remembering to add on the days (i.e. temp rise happens a day or two AFTER ovulation)?

Yes, just started with sticks! Had period 9 days after positive stick. So that's not so long....

Personally I do not rate sticks and think temping is more accurate, but if the two are telling you the same thing - and it boils down to a 7 -9 day LP, it is time to see the Dr IMO.

I agree with the above post re temps and opk. OPK alone are not accurate as they can (and do) give false +. Also, you can O upto 48 hours after the positive test so your LP may only be 6 days. Anything 10 days and under and its best to have a word with the GP. Try taking Vit B6 - 50mg each day of your cycle, most women get an extra 1-3 days on their LP very quickly. Your GP may also give you some progesterone to lengthen your LP.

I went to see the GP and she didn't really know what I was talking about. She said it wouldn't be a problem and that an embryo could implant even after only 48 hours which I was surprised about! She'd never heard of such a problem before! Anyway, she is doing a day 21 hormone test, probably hoping to keep me quiet.

She does not sound very helpful.

Try the B6 and see if that does anything for you.

She's talking nonsense, punchy, but I'm not surprised because so many GPs have no idea about short luteal phases. A day 21 prog test will only show that you have ovulated and that your prog levels were OK 7 days after ovulation, not that they are declining too fast after that. Things you can do for yourself in the meantime are try some acupuncture or try some herbs from a qualified medical herbalist - both very good at lengthening luteal phases, though can take a few months to work. Mrs Happy is right about vit B6 too - B vits v helpful with cycle regulation.
